Misc Hermione

Rewatching the movies after listening through the new audiobooks and I’m realizing for the first time that I think Hermione is really annoyingly portrayed in the movies. I think it’s partially because of how much character development gets cut. Is this a common opinion?

They removed all the rough edges from the books and made her almost perfect in the movies

I see what you mean. I feel like Emma’s portrayal plus the writing/directing just made her into an annoying know it all. Took away a lot of depth.

They removed the best parts of her personality in the process.  Hermione was such an amazing female figure because she was socially awkward.  Not enough girls in media are allowed to have a low emotional intelligence - which is often what happens when someone has a super high IQ.  She was realistic and they made her just like every other female character created by men.

Good points. I do feel like overall the movies captured Ron better than Hermoione though. Gives me even more excitement for the new series. I think there’s a great opportunity to get them both right.

I find the movies to be overrated, I ignore them for the books.

We watched the first three films and then read the books with my son. When I realised that so much of what I remembered being great about PoA was missing from the movie, I decided we'd read each book, then see the corresponding film before moving to the next one.

This resulted in my nine-year-old sitting rapt listening to Goblet of Fire, begging for a few more pages every time, and then declaring the film "pretty boring". Wonder if he'll feel the same about OotP.

Just wondering, how did your kid react to the beginning and ending of GoF when Voldemort appears?

After rewatching I agree more than I used to. Out of curiosity, will you watch the new show?

lol I’m so excited for it. I’m making my wife watch them as well. I’m also forcing her to listen to the audiobook and watch the movie before Christmas. She’s never seen/read any of it.

I showed her the trailer for the tv show and she said “why do people care who he is? Is he not just a normal kid?” I’m 💀

I think they're appropriately rated. People hate on them too much for them to be overrated.

I feel like the movie makes Hermione a little too perfect sometimes... A lot of Ron's clever moments were given to her, too. Do you thinks that's a part of why she comes across differently in the book??

I’m rereading the books and I can’t stand her there either. In the movies she is exceptionally insufferable though, mainly because of how she acts from the fourth movie onward. I feel like David Yates has never met teenagers in real life.

Director loved Hermionie / Emma. Turned her into a Mary Sue. Gave all of Ron's best lines to her - even when it didn't make sense like doing some exposition on the Wizarding World culture that only Ron would really know. Ruined the story arc for both characters and stunted the character development.

That was the fault of screenwriter Steve Kloves, not the directors.

That always has been a big problems in the movies. They gave many great moments that Ron had in the books to movie Hermione.

I rewatched the movies and I do find Hermione very annoying or she just annoyed of everyone around her

Even in the books, I find her annoying. She's quite patronizing. Her character is interesting and she's of course essential to the story, but I couldn't stand her irl.

I find her to be much more relatable in the books

Oh definitely! She's way too polished in the movie, and Emma being so pretty makes her a saint. She's more interesting in the books. I just can't stand her 😅 (even if having a bold and super smart female character was so good for girls at the time, including myself)

The books definitely give her more redeeming features - things like her passion for SPEW, while they're laughed at by other characters, really illustrate more about her character, as in her soul, rather than her characteristics.

It's been a long time since I've read the books - I last read any of them when Deathly Hallows was released - but reading them as an adult (and reading them more slowly, not racing through them to find out what happens and avoid spoilers) to my child has given me a far greater appreciation of the characters, especially Hermione, who I think had become the film version in my head.

They removed her flaws from the books that made her more rounded. In the movies she literally carries the trio.

She was so anxious and unhinged in the books. Caught me off guard haha

Well, I seem to be the only person in this post who never felt that way. I dunno, I like her just fine in the films.

Yes, this opinion has been around for about 20 years now.

My bad, I seriously never noticed until rewatching them this week. I also wasn’t allowed to watch them as a kid so my first time was only a few years ago.

No need to feel bad about it. I'm just answering your question, no moral judgement.

So many Ron's lines were "given" to her. Screenwriter had a strange crush on her. So cringe to hear Ron give her compliment for simplest things. She is definitely overrated, he is underrated.
