I hate these stupid gimmicky ai slop video game mash ups. I genuinely do no care for them. Everyone is acting like it’s the coolest shit in the world, it’s a fucking gimmick you laugh at for 5 minutes before moving onto something with equal or less substance. It’s also more justification for ai being pushed into every little fucking thing for no reason.

I'm sure people use AI to make them now but I strictly remember seeing these before LLM and GenAI became what it is today.

The only one i remember was the Mario on Minecraft one.

That one was possible because both Mario and Minecraft have been decompiled as far as I’m aware.

In theory you could put Mario 64 on any game because you only need the decompiled version of the player game.

But having an ai decompile and forcefully run both games simultaneously while communicating information between them would be the only realistic way of doing this with modern games like Elden Ring.

There were a few before AI/LLMs but in the past week a ton of AI bros decided they wanted to do this and so now there are a ton of mods like this which are 100% vibecoded slop.

This is not what they did, it is using ai in real time to combine the games which are running at the same time.

The confusion seems to be coming from the fact that 2 separate methods are being used for practically the same. 1 running both games in real time and using ai to layer them on top of each other by shearing there memory. 2 judging ai to decompile code to port the actual code to the other game.

It’s technically both. The PC is running both games at the same time and the AI is bridging the gap between the code to make this.

It passes collision and damage data from Elden Ring to Mario and also passes back visuals from Mario directly into ER engine so it draws it in the game world.

Iirc, it doesn’t rewrite the code exactly. I’m no programmer but what I know is that the gameplay is more akin to a green screen mesh than anything. In this example, You’re basically picking Mario and putting him in a green screen, then projecting the rest of Elden Ring onto it. What the AI is doing is bridging the gap so Mario can interact with Elden Ring.

But yeah, it’s not exactly rewriting anything. I’m not pro-AI, but this seems like the most innocent use of it I’ve ever seen tbh. It’s a novelty, it’s fun. And even though I can agree that it’s kinda scary that it can do that now, the AI isn’t exactly a programming genius in this instance.

It's technically just a mod, not AI. The thing that produced something is not that thing. A program that was made by AI is not necessarily AI just like a program made by a human is not a human.

Not exactly generative as it isn’t making the games from scratch, the games themselves are running separately at the same time.

yea, it’s just not generative ai at all. all the ai is doing is decomping two games, and then merging them into 1. the run as two at the same time, but look/talk to each other in one. basically in that Elden ring minecraft, by Minecraft just telling Elden ring, oh look a block was placed here, now you put one there, and so on. Generative ai makes something new, this is just combining to old things.
