Thing I hate the "this person has passed" meme
Not only is this meme really old and overdone. It makes it so when a famous person actually does die, you HAVE to doubt it because it might just be one of these
Look, I get the Internet, I've grown up on it for better (and mostly for worse). I know people love pulling these kinds of gotcha things, and i understand the concept of engagement bai, i fully understand why people make these.
What I don't understand is how so many people upvote and support these kinds of posts. Again, especially now, with how old and overdone it is. Every influential person has had a dozen of these kinds of memes made of them.

I like this version of the joke, because it never explicitly has an end date. I feel like it’s only funny if it’s misleading and not just lying

The picture isnt even black and white. Its just a picture of the guy
12
u/ZubatCountry 14h ago
Yeah maybe the first 100 times you see it
Otherwise it's just the same non-joke, delivered the same exact way everytime
Legitimately one of the lowest-effort posts you can make and they should be banned just for it, I don't even care about the misleading angle
It's just a "I also choose this guys dead wife" level of beaten into the ground reddit joke

u/MrMcGibbus 11h ago
I agree but at least for this, it doesn't give the same shock as getting tricked into thinking someone died
Plus you're most likely scroll after it rather than getting your time wasted and emotions played
You'll most likely stay on the trick posts longer to make sure you understood what you were seeing

u/RegularlyClueless 17h ago
I mean reddit mods definitely deserve all the flack they get. Generally I try to be as permissive as possible, not gonna ban someone for the word print, or for criticizing a certain comic artist

Felow giant skull, obnoxious when adjustable hats don't fit on the largest setting.
Good news is more room for the brain.

Yeah I really don't get the bit either. Like "Oh no you startled me into being empathetic and sad for a second because I thought someone nice died". Where is the funny in that?

People are demented
4
u/EntireFriendship517 17h ago
You're the one who tried to trick someone into briefly thinking their favorite celebrity was dead. And you're calling them demented? my guy
-2
u/Red8937 17h ago
I mean I thought it was pretty obvious I was joking, I wasn’t trying particularly hard to get them to believe it
But yea I would call having an alarm set for when someone you don’t know dies is a bit demented, probably so they can get writing their “eulogy” post for social media before anyone else

Some assholes think that making people shock is funny but in reality it's kinda on the same term as harming people as "harmless pranks"
21
u/9yr_old_lake 17h ago
Yea this is really dumb and annoying. It was kinda funny the first couple times, but it got old FAST and now people post them constantly.
17
u/MegaMGstudios 16h ago
It was less bad when the joke was revealed in the image itself, but this image is a straight up obituary, you gotta read into the description (if you're lucky) to get the " joke"
2
u/Practical_Entrance43 7h ago
THIS. I originally saw the image whilst scrolling and just went to search if it was legit or not. Like mf made a straight up memorial image and no punchline.

It was fine when it was just a black and white image with no additional text, and simply a caption. Now the whole birth year->2026, with the word "passed" or "unfortunately" or whatever else is just stupid.

u/Scolmann 17h ago
I saw that post the other day, and ironically this post gave me another mini heart attack

Those David Attenborough ones really fuck me up, cause I know that man is not long for this world any more :( he turned 100 this year

Everytime I see these kinds of images, it makes my heart sink for a brief moment until I realize they didn't die

True story, For some time I legit thought that jynxie genuinely died because of all the videos and edits on my insta fyp and all the comments saying rip under every jynxie clip. I even saw a fake news report about the passing of jynxie SOMEONE MADE A FUCKING FAKE NEWS REPORT saying jynxie died lol.

I can completely understand not liking them, the same way that I can understand being annoyed by a rickroll.
But just like getting rickrolled, I find these memes absolutely hilarious still. They’re the kind that make me smile, sigh, and shake my head

Reddit spent far too much time recommending posts from r/IsAttenboroughAlive to me. Gave me a mini heart attack each time until I noticed which subreddit it was from. Pisses me off beyond belief…

BITC I WANTED TO MAKE THIS EXACT SAME POST BUT SPECIFICALLY ABOUT THE JEB THING
see, normally i like it cuz you immideatly figure out its fake. it plays on the fact we never really see b&w pictures of celebs unless something bad happened, and usually its just that along side something like "x celeb has reportedly drank coffee this morning: "i liked it", they say"
this is different because it makes it practically UNOTICABLE that its fake. the post name, the date (which makes no sence), the small immposible-to-read text
this is really bad
1
u/KiraSophi 14h ago
Honestly, the meme was funny at first, but now people use it so much that it barely feels original anymore. The internet really knows how to run a joke into the ground.
1
u/Traditional-Tap6572 13h ago
I agree. It's even worse than the 67 meme. And I didn't even know that was possible.

OK, I also hate this because it’s not a meme. It’s just like hateful misinformation, but where I thought this was going was you not liking memes about people dying.
Which I get that. I remember I made a meme about when Dame Maggie Smith died and people told me that that was how they found out even though I waited two days, but they said that the fact that it was a meme softened the blow.

I like it when the person's been dead for at least a decade. It becomes a Slowpoke meme then

Similarly I hate it when I go to look something up on tiktok and one of the trending searches is "insert person I know of passed". Scared the shit out of me so many times cause of how many famous people have died in this year alone
3
u/NordicNjorn 17h ago
Well, your first problem is expecting accurate information from tiktok….

u/skyetheweirdidiot Salty hater 17h ago
Who said I'm expecting anything out of it? I was just making a point that with how many people have died this year, seeing even a mention of another person possibly having died does worry me for a second

How would you feel if you thought you're favorite celebrity died through one of these posts? How would you feel if that celebrity was someone you were close with? It isn't fun to trick people into thinking someone died.

In like 40 years, people are gonna make Youtube shorts about this image with the caption 'this didn´t age well´
