Place I HATE the gym
I honestly don't see the appeal of the gym at all. It might genuinely be one of the most boring and difficult activities out there—it's basically spending 1 to 2 hours sitting around moving weights and suffering. 0 entertainment, 0 fun. Honestly, the only way you can 'enjoy' the gym is if you're insecure enough about your body to put yourself through that. And even then, get ready: if you don't have good genetics, you'll spend months and months making zero progress while everyone else moves forward. On top of that, you have to stick to a perfect diet because otherwise your muscles simply won't grow and all you're doing is wrecking your body
(Not to mention how stupidly toxic the gym community is). I know I'm going to get brutally downvoted for this, but I honestly just think there are so many other ways to exercise and stay active that are way more fun, varied, and even healthier than the gym
EDIT: Okay, exactly what I suspected was going to happen has happened, and people out of nowhere have interpreted it as me hating working out, but that’s not what I said. I’ve been doing boxing and BJJ for a couple of years now, I love it, and I consider myself a pretty healthy and athletic person. I do them because they are very demanding and active sports that keep my brain occupied (which is what I like most in a sport), plus they’re super fast-paced and physically intense. Because of them, I’ve had to start going to the gym several times, only to realize that I hate it due to the massive contrast between the two. That’s why I’m saying I strictly hate the gym—the kind of gym where you're just lifting weights while sitting down with zero stimulation—not that I hate working out or anything like that

Not everything in life has to be fun. We're not toddlers.
But horsecocking weight around is fun.

Feeling my muscle raise after time of not working out gotta be one of the most satisfying feelings.

I just like to lift heavy thing and put heavy thing down, idk, make caveman brain happy.
I don’t have good genetics or the willpower to cut to 10% body fat so I’ll never look elite but I have fun and not having joint pain at 26 is pretty dope, know some friends of mine who don’t workout or lift and their joints are dying

i like the feeling of lifting weights and getting out of breath and many activities like running or swimming do not provide an adequate amount of resistance to make my muscles sore like i want which i find satisfying for some reason. i think that since i had to go for health reasons i learned to like the gym as time went on, but at first i was just struggling.

It just means you would probably enjoy other activities , just remaining active is lowkey fine

I mean there are alternatives but you're describing physical activity as a whole

Someone definitely paid for a planet fitness membership, didn't research how to properly do any exercises, didn't eat right, didn't understand the importance cycling different muscle groups and got mad when he didn't become the giga chad after a month.
Also sidenote, gym people are so nice, some guy helped me unrack weights the other day because by the end I looked like I was dying.

The trick is to do stuff that's fun. I used to hate the gym. Everyone told me to go on the treadmill and boring stuff like that. I ignored them and did what I wanted instead. Then I started enjoying the gym.
There has to be some activity in the gym that you would enjoy. You just have to find it.

if you only do something because it's fun then you're gonna die a loser having done nothing of any relevance

The post was bad enough and then i saw this

u/ampro67 14h ago
Humans were meant to do something difficult, too much fun or too much suffering is bad, everything is a matter of balance that's your best chance at reaching happiness

u/Mediocre_Drawing8164 14h ago
That doesnt mean that you will succeed if you only do stuff you hate lmao its quite the opposite even if you will be successful you will be miserable as hell because you dont even enjoy whatever you are doing

u/ampro67 14h ago
I never said that

u/ampro67 14h ago
Yes and? I did say that, what i didn't say is "you succeed only if you do things that you hate" obviously that's not true. For example if you've got something you enjoy and are good at you'd still have to suffer to stand out from mediocrity. My second comment clarified what i meant to say by mentionning balance, to succeed you need a balance between pain and pleasure. The fact you misunderstood something as simple as that (assuming you're not ragebaiting) really impresses me

That's fine if you don't like the gym. But it sounds your trying to cope with being over weight. And you think talking bad about it justifies you not going.

you could make the same argument for pretty much any solitary physical activity though

u/Mobile_Frosting_7936 14h ago
Its like running as a hobby. Body works = Luck Hormones + it's a way to get your head free. That's the main appeal, besides working on your body. Which I wouldn't necessarily call insecure, pursuing a career doesn't mean you're insecure about your status either.
Gym community is only toxic online I believe (As all online communities are)
Personally I've been in 4 gyms within a year (due to internships in different cities) and in every single one people are simply minding their business and MAYBE respectfully approaching you if ur doing something wrong. To help.

u/Dependent-Fact-6405 14h ago
Pretty sure this is bait. That being said, you have to build a base line to enjoy it. I hated it forever, then I forced my self to go. After a few months it becomes enjoyable because not everything is a suffer fest. More than that you establish a routine rather than just meandering around trying to figure out what to do every time.
Lastly, do Kettlebells. They're a lot less boring

u/manny_the_mage 14h ago
"sitting around moving weights and suffering"
it's supposed to be difficult, that's why it's called resistance training

I usually work out among watching movie or cartoon I wanna watch to make it not boring. Skill issue.

I love the gym. I put some deathcore metal in my ears, I'm hyper focus, lift heavy like my life depends on it. I put all my anger and frustration in it. Then I feel light as a feather. And the good side is I'm fit AF and I eat good all year long. And no your genetic as nothing to do with not gaining muscle or getting fit.

As someone who eats like shit and had bad genetics, you are dumb. Working out isnt gonna make everyone stronger at the same rate but it sure as hell still makes you stronger

u/SnooHesitations3900 14h ago
Nah, I get it. I hate treadmills. As healthy as it is it feels stale and boring
1
u/phantominway 14h ago
Dont use the treadmills lol. There are so many better ways to do cardio (swimming, boxing, running a route instead of on a machine, etc)
1
u/SnooHesitations3900 14h ago
Ah, but I do it for the warm up and it’s simple. My adhd brain just hates sitting in that one spot. I’d jog or run but I live in the uk so I’d like to not get assaulted.

u/AgentCirceLuna 14h ago
My gym was an hour’s walk away which was pretty good as I could jog there and back. No idea how I did it for so many years.
1
u/AgentCirceLuna 14h ago
My gym was an hour away so I’d speed walk or jog there, then have work an hour.5 later, so I’d do an hour lifting weights then get changed for work which was a.15 minute walk away. I did this for years and I worked till like 4-5am. Really fucked me up tbh, I overdid it.

When I was in High School, I absolutely thought this same stuff. Then one day I just decided to start. That was 10 years ago now and I love everything about the gym. I'm an amateur body builder now. It makes me feel better about myself, and guarantees me 1-2 hours of peace every day to do a repetitive task and process my thoughts. I'm physically and mentally stronger that I used to be. My diet still sucks though, I can't afford good food and I like junk too much.

u/sour_creamand_onion 14h ago
I like the gym. Only reason I don't go is because the one on my university campus is on the complete opposite side of the campus from my dorm and implemented a stupid ass "no non-clear bags" policy so if I want to go instead of going straight there after my classes end I have to go all the way back to my dorm just to leave my bag there than go all the way back and in the time it takes to do all that I could have worked out and gone home if they just LET ME IN WITH MY BAG.

u/MonicaLewinskibidis 14h ago
I like putting headphones on and dissociating from home life. It also gives me a goal to work towards. I don't really go on bodybuilding.com so I'm not really in tune with the community.

You realize most people can gain actually muscle fairly reliably on basically a McDonald’s diet right? They won’t be cut or anything but the muscle itself comes from lifting and consuming calories/protein.
There’s a big difference between building muscle to get stronger for function/health, and getting shredded to look good like a lot of gym rat types. The first one just needs a casually healthy diet with enough energy to replace and build, the other makes you peel skin off plain chicken breast.

u/PickMaleficent4096 14h ago
I also hate the gym, but like 90% of this post is just factually incorrect.
I don't like working out in public, having to wait for/ask for the right machines, or deal with working an extra stop into my routine. I just lift weights at home instead. Less efficient maybe, but I can meet my goals so I don't care.
Either way it's you who decides how long you work out and define what progress looks like. Genetics and nutrition are factors but they don't prevent progress, or even delay it all that much. You only need to pursue hyper efficiency if maximizing something in a given timeframe was your goal in the first place, and for most people it probably shouldn't be. You will get more fit working out even a small amount and eating normal food. Also most people at the gym are nice.
It kind of sounds like you have internalized the main points toxic gym culture without realizing that it's toxic in the first place because it's wrong about how exercise works and what the point of it is.

u/Clear_Audience5847 12h ago
That’s stupid to hate it because not everything have to be about fun and it’s not for bodybuilding only it’s also for strength training and gpp people who don’t want to be sport athlete but be capable in general
-1
u/Himmel-548 14h ago
Tou can get an effective workout training for 30-45 minutes. The 1-2 hr. thing is a myth. Not that people who train that long can't also.make good progress, but you DON'T HAVE to.

Idk I find lifting weights kind of fun
