General Reupload having figured out the rules: I hate that you can’t use the word Hitler any more

Post image

I can’t stand Hitler, obviously, because I’m a thinking human being. But, just like “grape” and “sewerslide”, the obsessive dumbing down of controversial words and names is just infuriating. Does not being able to say his name really help anyone? Is anyone who survived the horrors of the Second World War gonna look at the world today and think “ah well, it’s a bit rubbish but at least they’re not using these people’s names any more. That’s what’s really matters.” It just infantilises and waters down what is a deeply serious and important topic in world history - makes it into a meme. Additionally, having just thought about it, I hate the people seem to think that he was the one actually leading the Wehrmacht in the war: I saw online the other day that people were listing Hitler as one of the greatest generals of all time. Like…

everytime someone says "The Austrian Painter" or "Mustache Man" hell's fires burn hotter

At least mustache man just feels like youre making fun of him. But it depends on the context I suppose. I wouldn't want someone to write "mustache man ordered the genocide of undesirable populations in Europe".

presumably on him

u/SAURI23 5h ago

Wasn't one of Germany's biggest issues that he was leading the german army a bit too much?

Okay yeah fair point he started making high command decisions more and more as the war progressed but like… he didn’t do blitzkrieg. Manstein and Guderian did that.

5

u/BeduinZPouste 4h ago

And only were allowed because Hitler favored them over the other soldiers. Most generals were not in favor of Mansteins plan for France.

u/BeduinZPouste 4h ago

No, not really. That's propaganda. Note that the generals - Manstein the most had no issue with him, when it worked. Lot of their "we would have won, if he listened to us" is... Unsupported at best.

Yeah, Soviet Union would totally collapsed if you captured Moscow, and you would totally capture it in two weeks.

Yes. A lot of megalomaniac dictators have a problem listening to their capable millitary leaders when they tell them that attacking everyone and anything is a bad tactical move.

Way more complicated than that. There were a lot of times where he should have taken MORE control but let his generals do their own thing which directly led to major fuck ups. Then as they get more desperate he takes more and more control and makes a few fuckups of his own.

After the war many of the generals write books and shit talking about how they were super geniuses held back by their incompetent leadership since that looks a lot better than a career politician and former WW1 infantryman outsmarting career generals but they were too stubborn to change and H (fucking censorship) was too hands off to fix their fuck-ups. Obviously fuck H and he also had moments of stupidity and military blunders near the end of the war when he took more control (got more desperate and used a lot more drugs). Don't take the word of the only survivors that also had major incentive to present their selves better and all fuck ups as H's fault as gospel.

The "victor writes the history books" has always been a bullshit concept literally a dozen books taking "creative" interpretations of history by German generals that is now thought of as fact is all you need to know to know that quote is horse shit.

We can't say "Hitler" anymore?

Certain words arent considered brand friendly. As in brands dont want their ads to be played over videos with anything remotely controversial. So content that uses words like hitler, suicide, kill, rape, etc. Do very poorly because the algorithm doesnt reccomend it near as much.

And when you're an online creator looking to grow and/or pay rent youve gotta follow the rules.

u/YozTheFoz 4h ago

The word "hitler" is extra harsh because Germany has pretty strict rules aginst depiction of hitler or nazi ideology. So media conpanies just dont touch it at all instead if making a second copy for germany. Which is why you dont see hitler in games like civ, or various war games.

Tldr blame private equity.

I hate how history channels on YT will have to censor Hitler, one in particular called History Matters refers to him as the ‘toothbrush moustache having Austrian man’, call him hitler? No revenue for you today.

But mention Stalin? YT doesn’t bat an eyelid, such a complete double standard, either all of them are okay to say or none of them are.

It's advertisers. This whole thing is literally just because online advertisers do not like being associated with negative topics like Nazism, rape or [insert bad thing here]. A few drooling idiots might believe that their brand is somehow endorsing those things because it appears before the video. There's of course also people acting in bad faith and calling out companies, trying to stir up shit because their ads appeared on something they personally disagree with. This has all culminated in people self-censoring because they don't want the algorithms to bury them and hide the content they produce.

Lovely, isn't it?

Counterpoint:

Perhaps an algorithm that suppresses mentions of the word “Hitler” tends to prevent more Hitler-positive posts from gaining views than it does Hitler-critical views.

And if so, perhaps the (admittedly obnoxious) trend of Reddit users porting strategies for avoiding TikTok censorship to a site where those strategies are less important is a worthwhile price to pay.

I actually hadn’t thought of that and yeah that’s probably the reason for it; however I’d argue all it does is create a private language for these Nazi freaks (🧃, noticer, moustache man… etc) and make them feel like they’re being oppressed in some way or that they’re in some secret club. Wouldn’t it be better to get it all out in the open? I dunno. Just thinking out loud

That is genuinely brain dead stupid if its actually the case(so it might actually be true lol).

Neo-nazis are literally the guys that invented dog whistles and codewords for their shit filled brain ideas.

Ever seen a biker or someone else with a HH tattoo or a 88 tattoo? The eighth letter in the alphabet is H, double h is just code for Heil Hitler(swear to god mods don't delete my shit for informing people about their shit, Nazis live on keeping it all secret, your helping them if you delete my shit) to anyone else its just two letters but to their fellow kind its as obvious as the famous red armband. Then people in the know let others know so they can better identify and fight against neo-Nazi's and dumbass mods or social media companies themselves delete the info so the Nazi's get to stay hidden.

The only people actually saying it outright are the people trying to inform others and fight against Nazi's and their dog whistles , censoring not only doesn't help it outright HELPS Nazi's.

Great point, new hypothesis:

Perhaps advertisers do not like their advertisements appearing next to the word “Hitler,” and so an algorithm that suppresses mentions of the word helps maximize shareholder value.

And if so, perhaps the resulting outright help to Nazi’s is a worthwhile price to pay.

Well I'm glad you actually called Hitler by his name

1

u/msnahraa 5h ago

My bet is that they stop using the correct terms because more often than not you'll get (shadow-)banned if you do. You aren't allowed to use these words anymore because advertisers want to reach an audience as large as possible. That's why they need to make everything child-proof but adults still want to talk about adult topics and now you need to use infantilized words instead.

u/GIGAVIRUS22 3h ago

I call him Titler, mostly ironically

1

u/Cool_View_5297 1h ago

I agree. Also it makes it so the Nazis seem cool and mysterious like “ooh, they’re the bad guys, so bad you can’t even talk about it.” Having the Nazis seem edgy and mysterious is counterproductive. They existed, they were really dumb, evil and destroyed Europe as they knew it.

I think in general alot of the changes like "grape" and "sewerslide" are to avoid either rules or algorithm stuff on social media, so posts don't get automatically flagged, de monetized, or hidden. Less that people are too sensitive to say them.

Capitalists bottom line is more important unfortunately than using free speech to discuss historical events like YouTube and history youtube saying anything considered 'controversial' and I mean like just recounting actual history not fringe or bigoted conspiracy theories, actually just saying events means no money for you so many youtubers have to be wary about their language I absolutely despise it but I usually don't blame the person as they are just trying to not get punished by the algorithm for saying hitler or genocide as they are operating within a system that prefers shareholder opinion and getting paid over everything
