“Garabed S. Markarian
Of Malatya

September 21 1865 to March 13 1927”

I don’t have a strong grasp of Armenian so somebody please correct me.

Adding to what others are saying, Armenian proudly name themselves after the region which their families were from. The stone says “Malatyatsi” meaning from Malatya (called Sepastia by Armenians); Malatya is also the Turkish name for the city which is not unusual because most Armenians who left after the genocide spoke Turkish as a second language since they were forced to assimilate.

It’s all about sending a subtle message that the Armenians from a given region had their own unique culture - just like my family from Van (Vanetsis) and Erzerum (Erzerumtsis) did, as well as Armenians from every village in the diaspora. It’s an indication that they carry with them their unique culture
