Nothing better
We had an 11:45 am beer league game today. My 4yo got to come out and watch. She was so excited. We played on an arena ice with stadium seating so that elevated the experience for everyone.
When I skated on the ice and waved at her, she acted like I was some kind of nhl all star waving at her.
There is nothing better than feeling like you are an all star superhero to them. That made my year.

Time To March to Helm's Deep
In honor of the 25th anniversary of the films, I thought it was the perfect time to get a Lord of the Rings themed paint job. I've always loved the Isengard look on the Uruk- Hai and thought, "hey, that would look cool on a mask!". Thanks to a fellow tendy and artist in the Raleigh area, he brought this beauty to life!
It's sleek, it's simple, and it's effective. I am thrilled with how this came out, and to also support someone looking to help out other goalies with designs and pad repairs.
If you are looking to support a local artist, or even in need of repairs for your pads, I am happy to share his information so he can have more clients!
Now excuse me while I get this bad boy on the ice in between my times pillaging the Westfold.

Tacks are finally here!
Get to try them out tomorrow night. Coming from V9 pro pads. Switching to stiff pad for more stability in the butterfly.

New gear day!
Probably the one and only time in my life I'll be able to post new gear 😂 I'm psyched!
The blue is a lot more teal in person than on camera.
No trapper because I play ringette and I'm using a specialized glove. The plan is to padskinz it black so it at least matches a bit.

New Gear Day! From V5 to Nitro Pro !
Coming from over a decades old Vaughn V5 7990 set to this new custom True Nitro Pro set has been an incredible experience, have never felt more comfortable in a new set of gear.
590 game ready extra protection glove closure is insanely smooth after only a handful of games
the pads my god so good. when dropping down the thud it makes mmmm and that closure lol.
love the sound pucks make bouncing off pads and blocker.
I could go on for hours..

Are my pads too big?
I am a smaller goalie and I wanted to upgrade and slightly size up on gear.
I got this Bauer X5 pro Intermediate small 30+ pad set (I originally had Jr 29+1 brian’s netzero 2’s)
I land dead center of the knee block but I’m not sure if my thigh rise is too big or just big enough.
I played a pick up in them and I didn’t feel restricted, I didn’t do super fast or vigorous movements but they felt good after getting used to them.
they kind of overlapped when I was skating to my crease but that was my first time using them.
I just want to know if it’s worth keeping them or not.
I did love playing in them though! it gave me better 5 hole coverage than my brian’s

Tsukamaki Goalie Stick
Best grip I’ve ever used. Already used on my player sticks and will be applying to all future sticks
this is done by hand using Japanese style rope cord, no it does not ruin your gloves.

Im getting back into it and have fitment questions
Have not played ice in better than 20 years. Picked up some older Vaughn stuff for a good deal and they came with goalie knee pads... when I played i never used them. All you guys on the knee pads now a days?
Also these are leather strap pads but the newer velcro pads from today's world are worn looser from then I played back in the day?
I remember my pads never rotated on my legs back then.
Im a wax string toe tie guy, that still ok?
I need to go try stretching before I attempt this again.

True Catalyst 7X L87
Hello there.
I bought the full set for my kids, he plays U10 hockey. But after around 5 months of use the wear on the gear is beyond anything I have experienced.
The pads:
The pads shows heavy wear on all corners, and on the knee blocks. His right pad is starting to develop a hole on the upper outside corner.
The Glove:
The binding(lace/cord) have started to fray so bad I think it will snap soon. The glove have also started to develop a hole in the palm, but to where it bends.
The Blocker:
Is the only part that does not seem to start falling apart.
He came from a set of Bauer GSX pads and CCM Eflex glove and blocker. None of those pieces shows this amount of wear, and they have been used for a longer periode of time.
Is this normal for True Goalie gear to start fall apart after only 5 months of use (and there have been a summer break in there as well), so the real time on ice is maby 4 months. The kit have only been used on ice.
I am in a bit of a pickle her, so dear friends of reddit give me some advice.
p.s
I am at work now, and I do not have any pics, but can post pics when I get home.

Black vs. white goalie gloves — does the colour actually make a difference on the ice?
Hey everyone,
I've been looking for new goalie gloves for quite a while, and I'm finally close to making a decision. I'd appreciate some advice, especially from goalies who've played with both black and white gloves.
My current gloves are white Brian's Iconik X Intermediate. I've used them for a while, and they're now very worn out and too small for me, but I absolutely love how they feel. That's why I want to upgrade to the newer Brian's Iconik X2 Senior Full Right gloves rather than try another brand.
After searching for a long time, I finally found the X2s at a Czech store. Someone on Reddit actually helped me find it, so thanks for that!
My dilemma is the colour.
I have two options:
- Option 1: White Brian's Iconik X2 catcher + black/white Iconik X2 blocker, for around 3,280 PLN.
- Option 2: Black Brian's Iconik X2 catcher + black Brian's Iconik X blocker, for around 3,150 PLN. The catcher and blocker would be from two different generations, but both would be black.
My team's colours are white and blue. I have a white mask and currently use white gloves, but my leg pads are black. I wasn't entirely sure about choosing black pads in the first place, and I've regretted that decision a little because they don't really match the rest of my gear. With a white mask and white gloves, the black pads feel a bit out of place.
That's why I'm considering black gloves now. Maybe having black gloves as well would make the whole setup look more consistent. However, I've never played with black gloves, so I don't know if I'd like them on the ice or whether the colour makes any practical difference.
I'm also not completely convinced by having a white catcher and a black/white blocker. I prefer matching colours, especially when I'm spending this much money on equipment. On the other hand, I don't want to choose black only to match my pads and end up regretting it again.
I'm not in a huge rush to buy them within the next day or two. The Czech store currently has them available, and they don't seem to be selling as quickly as they did in some Canadian stores. Still, I know availability can change, and I've already spent a long time searching for this particular model.
For goalies who've used both black and white gloves:
The main thing I'm unsure about is the colour, not the fact that the catcher and blocker would be from different generations.
I was actually close to buying a black set before, but it sold out. At the time, I seriously considered it, but afterwards I kept thinking that I would probably prefer white gloves.
My leg pads are currently black, and part of me thinks that getting black gloves as well could make the whole setup look more consistent. Maybe I'd get used to them and end up liking the look. On the other hand, I originally wanted white gloves, and I don't want to spend this much money on a set only to regret the colour choice later.
I might eventually replace my black leg pads with white ones, so I don't necessarily want to choose my gloves based entirely on the pads I have now.
For those who have played with black gloves after using white ones: did you get used to the colour and start liking it, or did you find yourself wishing you'd gone with white? And does having matching black gloves and pads make the setup look and feel better in practice, or would you still choose the colour you originally preferred?
I'd appreciate advice based on actual playing experience, rather than just which setup looks better. Thanks!

Looking for the backing Bauer uses for the foams in their masks.
I've got a couple masks I'm in the middle of refurbishing. I want to make the attachment method mechanical like how Bauer does with their nme masks, etc but I have trouble bailing down that black/grey material they use. Does anyone know what it is, and where I can get some?
Pic attached for reference

Gear I saw at a store
Probably won’t ever think of being a goalie because I feel like my awareness is horrible, but here’s some interesting gear I found, as well as some Reebok Premier IIs with what appear to be the NHL colour scheme.

Just got my new skates
Maybe some of y'all remember my threads about them. Well here they are. Still got some pain on the sides but it's gonna go away overtime. Still gotta try them on ice. They look so cool and except this pain they fit perfectly and are super comfortable.

Soft Ice vs. Hard Ice
Can someone explain what soft ice is and what hard ice is? How you can tell which ice is which when you step onto the rink? How does it also impact the skate hollow you pick? For example, on soft ice should your skate hollow have more or less glide than bite?

Why did we keep our gear loose?
I’ve been playing for 15 years at various levels of lower-level Juniors and ACHA. One thing that I always wondered was why we kept our gear so freakin’ loose back in the days. I say this because now it seems every leg channel is super tight (which I love).
My chesty gets tied and tucked, I yank on my straps around my ribs and arms as tight as they can go. My breezer belt goes just below my belly button and tight as possible. I’ve gone as far as adding extra Velcro on my calf straps so I can tighten them even further.
All-in-all, and maybe I’m a psycho, I hate having loose gear because it feels like I have to move pad to move my leg, instead of my gear and my body moving simultaneously. I don’t know if that makes sense. But, I was taught to keep my gear very loose and I never understood it.

Insane bucket spotted in Ontario senior AA
This specimen is rocking a Bauer Reakt 90 player helmet - I've never even seen this before in beer league. Even if he upgraded the internal foam, it's a two-piece adjustable helmet that surely has some weak points. The sty is undeniable but I'm kinda worried for this guy.

I'm lost for words...
I literally cannot make a low glove/blocker save if my life depended on it. I ALWAYS get beat there its so awkward to save i feel im always a few inches to high or im too low and hitting the top of my pads i dont know what to do anymore its so frustrating lost 8-6 today and 7 goals where low literally the same shot (shown in pictures) i watch alot of tapes of goaltending coaches and they say barely move your glove/blocker and lean into the save but they always shoot like peewees in the training sessions what happens when its a rocket... im also minuscule for a goalie at 5"7 so cutting out angles is hella hard. Today 3 goals hit the post and went in its like i cant even reach that far i need a fix and need kne right now this is embarassing im saving one timers breakaways and all but cant save those shots i look like an idiot out there please help

I tracked every shot from my last 2 games. Expected goals told me something my save % didn’t.
I’m a junior goalie playing for the Pelham Panthers. I built a tool called GoalieIQ Analytics that breaks down game film shot by shot, and I ran my own last two games through it.
My save % was .897 (35 saves on 39 shots), which looks fine on the stat sheet. But the shots I faced were worth about 2.96 expected goals, and I gave up 4. I stopped 6 of 8 high-danger chances and 13 of 15 rush chances, so the gap came from somewhere else. That’s the kind of thing save % alone hides.
Two games is a tiny sample, so I’m not drawing big conclusions, but it’s exactly why I wanted to track everything.
GoalieIQ gives you a shot map, expected goals, save % by shot type and danger level, rebound control, and a clip of every shot. If you want to see it on your own film, DM me and I’ll run your first game free. Website is goalieiqanalytics.com
What do you track for yourself, if anything?
