Duolingo taught me that when the object of a transitive verb is engem or téged, the indefinite forms get used, and when the object is önt or őt, the definite forms get used. So látok téged, but látom őt. (And the same for minket+titeket vs önöket+őket.)
What happens if the object is both? Látok téged és őt? Látom téged és őt? Do you have to say Látok téged és látom őt?
Edit: Whoops, I forgot that -lak/-lek is a thing, and I'm curious how that comes into play here too. But to ask what I was originally trying to ask, I should have asked about Látsz engem és őt VS Látod engem és őt?

One contrast from our fictional Hungarian dialogue:
Nyeléskor erősen fáj, egyébként csak enyhén.
It hurts a lot when I swallow; otherwise only mildly.
Listen for erősen and enyhén in the full practice: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/POh8Q8X74B4
We made SziaMed, a completely free platform for everyday and medical Hungarian. It is FREE for everyone: https://sziamed.com/try
The cartoon visuals are AI-generated and the voices are synthetic. Independent Hungarian pronunciation review is pending. This is language practice, not medical advice.

Hey everyone!
Asking a question about one of my all time favorite Hungarian bands.
I know the first half of this song is a traditional tune called Gyertek Fiúk menjünk a kocsmába, but halfway (about 3 minutes), there are more lyrics that seem to be from a different song. Anyone know the lyrics for the second song or what its name may be? Or, is it even Hungarian?
It starts with what sounds like "Ayten Lale..."
Thanks!

A customer of mine is trying to find out about his family history and has come across letters and documents written in Hungarian. We are struggling to translate it and was wondering if anyone would be ever so kind to do this for him? We have managed to do newer translations that have been typed but are struggling with written text.
Will add photos in the comments
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thank you

When watching Netflix, if I turn on Hungarian subtitles, they pretty closely mimic the English word order. If I change the language to Hungarian, the spoken language is a much more natural spoken Hungarian (so word order is very different) and the Hungarian subtitles do not match the spoken Hungarian. My question then, is should I listen in Hungarian (and read the English subtitles?) or as someone that is still learning and can follow maybe half the spoken, should I listen in English and read the Hungarian ? Does it even matter??

Hi all,
I am a Hungarian language teacher working on a new approach. I teach lessons in person, 1 on 1, and would be looking for one or two volunteers to be "guinea pigs".
In a nutshell, I am building a system that keeps track of the student's progress broken down to every vocabulary and grammar item. My goal is to keep the student's motivation alive by showing them, week after week, month after month, their progress in real numbers and percentages.
So, ideally, I would need two students who are willing to give this a go.
What you get: a free Hungarian lesson per week.
What I get: working material to succesfully develop my system.
We can meet weekly, ideally in central Budapest.
Feel free to contact me if you have more questions.
Alex

Hello everyone! My great grandmother was Hungarian and my Papa, her son, recently died over the summer. Looking through all of Papa’s old things we have found some Hungarian writing from his mother. Papa was the last one to know the language, and I wonder if anyone could help translate this for my family!

There's this word my family uses that was introduced by my Hungarian grandfather, so I'm fairly certain it's Hungarian. I don't know how it's spelled but if I go by pronounciation it should be along the lines of "Balászcocó". It is the name of a kind of poltergeist or scapegoat, so if some small but annoying thing like for example soup stains on the wall are discovered at home and nobody admits to be responsible for it, we just say "The Balászcocó did it!"
I can't find anything about it on the internet and unfortunately I can't ask my grandfather about it anymore. So I'm curious if anyone is familiar with it or if it's just a creation of my Nagypapa. And in any case, can this name be translated literally in some way? Köszi!

Hello everyone!
I'm writing to ask if anyone has any recommendations for learning Hungarian from essentially 0 (apart from a few random phrases and words) to an intermediate level (around high B1 maybe B2), I'm open to youtube videos/online courses/apps etc.
My mother's side of the family is Hungarian, and many of them do not share any languages with me, so I would really like to make the effort to learn Hungarian. My aim isn't really to become totally fluent, but I'd like to be able to comfortably have simple conversations, discuss the events of my life, talk about family etc. So nothing super complicated, I'm not aiming for crazy intellectual discussions.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Köszönöm!
Edit: I'm planning to get speaking practice/some feedback with my mother (B2 level) and my bestfriend and grandmother (both native)

I'm learning the definite present tense, and the word "halljátok" came up in my deck. The robot voice pronounces it in a way that sounds more like "hajátok" to me. Wiktionary also gives this pronunciation in IPA ([ˈhɒjːaːtok]). (Edit: This IPA would actually map to "hajjátok", I misread it at first.)
Is there a rule that LJ gets pronounced like LY (which I know sounds like J)? Is the double L relevant here? Is it just this one word that has this? Or is this not a thing at all and something I'm reading too much into? ^^;

Hello, as I noticed many people on this subreddit are learning Hungarian. I'm a Hungarian as a foreign language teacher trainee and I would love to gain more experience in teaching Hungarian. I'm not offering paid classes (yet) as I'm not experienced enough, but I'm offering free practice sessions for now (vocabulary building, conversation practice, practicing grammar). If you'd like to teach me the basics of your language in return, I would love to learn from you all, but it's optional.
The sessions would be online in a video or voice call.
I'm mostly free on Mondays and weekends nowadays.
Please send me a dm if you're interested and tell me your level of Hungarian and your native language as well.
I speak English fluently and I also know some basic Spanish.
Thanks!! :)

Nektek mi a véleményetek ezekről? Vajon kibővül ezekkel a szavak jelentése, netán kiszorítják a régit, vagy csak múló divat?

the english translation is "where is the big ship sailing" but "hol" is used for stationary things. if you wanna ask where is the ship sailing shouldn't you then use "hova" instead?

Hello Reddit,
My partner and I are very casually starting to learn Hungarian. One place we discovered would be great to start today is social situations where I (being autistic) want to say things just to him! Here is an example list:
We need to leave
I feel complete/done here
I’m hungry
(I want a) dessert bite
I want a snack
I’m thirsty
Do they have fun drinks?
They seem cool
They seem annoying
What a bitch
What a sweetie
they look just like [and then I insert a really obscure and spot on comparison to someone we know] (this one happens a lot
That’s embarrassinag
Please stop talking /about that
Oh god
Yikes
I love you!!
I’m gonna go hide somewhere for a bit
So yeah any suggestions on how to most accurately convey those things I would loooove. I’m too early on to discern whether Google Translate is giving me the most appropriate responses for what I’m after

Hi! I’m Hungarian, and I’m looking for someone who would be interested in practicing Hungarian through writing, while also being able to write in Korean. We could help each other learn and practice our respective languages.

Jó nepot kivánok!
Hello Hungarian learners in Phoenix and outside it.
The Hungarian Cultural Association here in Phoenix, AZ runs classes several times a year at beginner and above levels. 1-2 more people are necessary for the class I signed up for ( level: beginner and above. ). Right now only one other person is signed up! Classes are held online at 5 pm MST ( same as California time until we change the clicks again again) on Wednesday or Thursdays for 14 weeks beginning October 7, 2026. The cost is a little under $ 300( US) . Member get a small discount. If you think you might be interested, please go to the website and look for the words " Language Classes" The website says that students all over the world are welcome.
I went to their Phoenix Hungarian festival during the winter. Everyone there was friendly and willing to let me use my halting Magyarl! I have been waiting to start this class since then ( while studying in my own , but now I believe it when I read that in the case of Hungarian, I at least , really need a teacher!)
https://hcaphoenix.org/language-learning/
I will be just a student. I gain no financial benefit from your participation. ( I am just hoping the class doesn't get cancelled so I can take it !)

I think i have hit that infamous wall. I got to the point, where i dont see any progress for long months. Does anyone experience the same, or maybe managed to break through and can share some tips, sources?
