You own a non-stick pot. I don't think you're mentally capable of learning.

I genuinely don’t understand what people get out of being so aggro online about shit that doesn’t matter.

142

u/ResidentEmu5 1d ago

The second you learn the most basic concepts about aquiring debt..wait...you don't have any debt. I don't think you are mentally capable of learning. Never mind.

51

u/Phyltre 1d ago

The moment you are mentally capable of learning...wait...you are just text on a screen. I don't think you are real. No mind.

No mind to think

I think everyone's just getting angrier and dumb shit is an excuse to let it out

21

u/shortstuff813 13h ago

Bc they’re living very unhappy lives and aren’t happy unless they’re complaining about something and/or need to put other people down to feel better about themselves. They should try ✨therapy✨ instead

14

u/Chem1st 1d ago

Because the only thing in their lives they have to flex with is shit that most people don't care enough about to bother with.

20

u/RoughhouseCamel 1d ago

The aggression and the hostility is the point, not whatever the hell they’re talking about. Some are people that feel crushed under perceived low status, they need someone to take it out on, and the internet gives them an outlet to do so without any personal risk. Bullying has always been a popular pastime.

The other thing that’s been developing more recently is many of us have become stimulation addicts because of the Internet, constant screen access, and a mostly sedentary society. Mentally, we’ve gotten too used to information overload, and physically, we’re not being engaged enough. So some need a rush, and conflict gives a boost of endorphins and adrenaline. Sometimes, you’re seeing a junkie on the overly-online equivalent of a meth bender, and that’s why they’re like that.

15

u/lolafawn98 1d ago

it’s gotten way worse over the past 5 years, after already having gotten worse the previous 5. there was always some element of anonymity making people act weird, but now people get furious over absolutely nothing at all. like would this person say this to their sweet old Aunt Betty who just made the family a roast in her deep dish non stick pot? I doubt it!

8

u/Fight_those_bastards 23h ago

HOW FUCKING DARE YOU!!!

Seriously, though, you’re 100% correct. The internet would be a much more civilized place if we could punch people in the face over tcp/ip.

3

u/Disastrous_Can8053 22h ago

You absolutely can, just drop the navy seal copypasta on them

3

u/GroochIsBigger 17h ago

I think it’s just a lot of bots tbh, which helps to make that behavior seem more common amongst actual people. And if it increases engagement and screen time then it’s a win for the platform (not defending it of course). I mostly downvote and then block accounts that behave like this, because it’s just too exhausting to read streams of inflammatory comments everywhere that aren’t geared towards any real discussion. I’m tired, boss.

13

u/I_Did_The_Thing 1d ago

Looooootttttta lil baby bitches out there in this world, and they all seem to spend a lot of time crying online.

5

u/disableddoll 1d ago

it’s a lot easier to not get physically punished when you can talk shit from behind a screen. they say to read plays out loud as they’re not meant to be read in your head alone and it fully extends to online posts. Read it out loud so you get a sense for others humanity if you seem so quick to send insults and vitriol to strangers online please

4

u/boulevardofdef 1d ago

When you see that, you've generally run into someone who's deeply invested in a subculture you're not familiar with, and assumes everyone else at least is aware of the subculture.

It’s definitely increased in the last few years. I donn’t know if it’s a Reddit thing.

Oh my god just say you own a cast iron and it's better and get on with your life.

54

u/alejo699 1d ago

I own a cast iron skillet and use it for 90% of my cooking, which qualifies me to say that lakeboredom is an insufferable asshole.

11

u/cheshsky 1d ago

I want to thrift cast iron stuff, now that I've moved out and am acquiring my own pots and pans, and they definitely are an insufferable prick.

12

u/RoughhouseCamel 1d ago

I’ve had a couple of Lodge pans for at least a decade. I hate the upkeep for my grill pan, but I use my regular 10 inch pan every day. I think they go for like $30. Worth every penny if you lose patience trying to find one you like in a thrift store.

21

u/TacetAbbadon 23h ago

The cast iron crowd seriously doesn't understand the concept of the right tool for the right job.

3

u/CreativeGPX 2h ago

It's the usual case of normal people don't make a fuss. The people who do aren't normal.

I love cast iron. I'm in the subreddit. I evangelize a bit. I use it like 10 or 20 percent of the time.

2

u/cookiesdragon 2h ago

Love cast iron but yes, there are times when it's not the best tool to use for cooking. Knowing when to use something else is an important skill.

You know how some people get behind the wheel of a car, and something about them makes them prone to road rage.

I think some people can't discuss food based opinions without going into a rage.

You see it all the time with steak preferences, vegetarian/vegan opinions (for and against), and opinions on spices/sauces.

44

u/FengYiLin 1d ago

Steak specifically brings the worst in many people for some reason.

I never saw people get aggressive about frying an egg the way they get about frying a chunk of beef.

19

u/Levaporub 1d ago

I remember seeing a video in some sub where Andy Cooks said to flip the steak often (a technique used by many starred chefs) and so many comments were just defending their one flip method like their self-worth depended on it.

2

u/Doomdoomkittydoom 9h ago

Cold sear which coincidentally uses a non-stick pan.

13

u/RoughhouseCamel 1d ago

Avoid r/eggs You’d think it’s just a place for cooking methods, recipes, and the kind of internet humor you’d expect from a space devoted to something as mundane as eggs. Instead, those people get intense, and it’s often not a friendly community.

14

u/Aifendragon 17h ago

It's wild to me that literally every time I see someone do a steak cooking video there is someone who is either screaming "THAT STEAK IS RAW I WOULD THROW IT IN YOUR FACE IF YOU SERVED IT TO ME" or "YOU'VE RUINED IT YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED IT'S OVERDONE". Literally cannot win.

6

u/Divine_Entity_ 15h ago

Steak is probably such a hotbed topic as people's preferences genuinely range from shoeleather to still mooing. And the texture / chewing experience changes considerably as it cooks, so if you like a steak one way, having it cooked more than 1 step away from that starts to become noticeable.

I also get the hygiene aspect, but a single cow is low risk for a healthy adult. Its not like ground meat where lots of animals are mixed increasing contamination risk, or chicken where the pathogens are very serious.

7

u/Aifendragon 15h ago

I mean I get it being noticable, I have my own preferences with steak etc.

What I do not get is how many people get blindly furious over how someone *else* cooks a steak. Like I'm not gonna eat it, I don't care if you have it fully raw or cook it into a briquette.

4

u/tamebeverage 12h ago

It also has to do with the specific pathogens. The one of concern with beef is a bacterium only located on surfaces and doesn't penetrate into the muscle. So a piece of steak with a seared outside, regardless of how raw the inside, does not contain any.

Ground beef, however, has surface for it to live on throughout. The same protection you get with steak does not apply to ground meat.

I still order my burgers medium or medium-rare because I like them that way and find the risk worth it.

1

u/soulstoned 8h ago

Often both on the same steak!

19

u/maltliquorjetski 1d ago

Idk man people lose their minds over what a “proper” omelet is

20

u/Slight_Energy_8825 1d ago

If there is even one drop of moisture left in your scrambled eggs, expect the comments to be full of people saying your eggs are raw and they’re disgusting and you’d better never feed that to me specifically. Like get a fucking grip. They’re eggs.

I personally don’t like very dry scrambled eggs. So I don’t eat them. But other people are allowed to!

10

u/verninson 1d ago

I am a fan of the just-set scramble. Done enough to eat with a fork, creamy enough to spread on toast.

4

u/7-SE7EN-7 It's not Bologna unless it's from the Bologna region of Italy 23h ago

Some people act like every post on the internet is meant for them specifically

1

u/Extreme_Wish_553 6h ago

Food especially is such a weird one. "Uhm, I didn't offer you any? So it is fine if you wouldn't like it."

6

u/JadeHarleyOswald 23h ago

I personally get the opposite. It's like.. no, my eggs are not burnt just because they're brown. I like them brown. God forbid I want some texture. People are really weird about scrambled eggs. Half of the internet thinks eggs that have any moisture in them are evil and the other half thinks that scrambled eggs should be soft as fuck like baby food.

8

u/JackxForge 1d ago

And while I've never seen fists fly over it I have heard yelling matches about the proper way to load a dishwasher.

8

u/fkingidk 1d ago

I worked with a dishwasher I was 99% sure was on meth or something similar and that happened.

3

u/Doomdoomkittydoom 10h ago

Probably not as much but people still do get angry at how you like your eggs, especially if you like to fry scrambled eggs in brown butter and 'over cook" it.

1

u/CreativeGPX 2h ago

In the cast iron subreddit there is an endless war between people who brag about their egg cooking and people who mock them for just flooding it in massive amounts of oil up make it not stick. I've seen so many egg arguments to the point where it's a meme there.

1

u/Doomdoomkittydoom 1h ago

If you keep a cast iron skillet well seasoned by not searing other things in it, it will make an excellent pan for eggs.

1

u/CreativeGPX 1h ago

Not saying otherwise just saying I've seen lots of egg arguments.

4

u/heffalumpish 1d ago

IDK there’s a whole lot of redditors who think if your egg sticks on cast iron you’re a pan-washing philistine

1

u/Ubiquitouch 3h ago edited 2h ago

It's because cooking steak is incredibly easy, and also associated with masculinity, so there are a lot of men who are very bad at cooking, but think managing to cook a steak makes them a chef.

5

u/123iambill 21h ago

I mean I can kinda get being angry that a place doesn't have vegetarian or vegan options (well, not angry, but disappointed but just go somewhere else). But as someone who has worked in restaurants it fucking baffles me when people get angry that we had vegan and vegetarian options. Like we had a selection of vegan cakes as well as non vegan ones, a lot of them were just vegan copies of the regular cakes too. And I've had people piss and moan about that which is fucking wild. Like that's not being upset that we don't cater for you, that's being upset that we cater for other people as well as you while you lose out on nothing. Also, you can just eat the vegan thing if you want of it is one of the vegan items that isn't a copy.

I used to boil water in my non stick pot until I realized I never got the Mallard reaction I needed, green tea tasted like shit

What do ducks have to do with boiling water

24

12

u/Fun-Session-1929 1d ago

31

u/Emmettmcglynn 1d ago

Well GOD FORBID a man might want a larger-than-average pancake.

5

u/DjinnaG Bags of sentient Midwestern mayonnaise 1d ago

Silly rabbit, extra large pancakes are only for women and children

4

u/Deep-Hovercraft6716 1d ago

The pancake would be smaller than average if it was in a pot, wouldn't it? Pots are small and tall, pans are flat and wide.

24

u/Emmettmcglynn 1d ago

And if I want an exceedingly tall pancake, I would consider that a big pancake.

24

u/gaygirlboss 1d ago

Introducing Potcakes™️: they’re like pancakes but exceedingly tall

9

u/Emmettmcglynn 1d ago

If my blueberry-banana Potcake™️ isn't AT LEAST the size of a small wedding cake, it is too dang small.

9

8

Oh my bad, no.

13

u/FickleCook3639 1d ago

i’ll cook scrambled eggs in a pot. i’m not doing that fancy gordon ramsay shit but it’s not that different than a pan and the heat is a little more 3d, which can be helpful.

8

u/SausagePrompts 1d ago

Wat? Is that how I should be selling pots now? They cook in 3d? Bitch, that's an oven.

11

u/FickleCook3639 1d ago

When you really get down to it, what is an oven but a very large pot turned on its side?

10

u/DjinnaG Bags of sentient Midwestern mayonnaise 1d ago

Tangentially related, baked eggs can be really damn good and super easy, though maybe a little slower, at least it’s hands-off time

7

u/SausagePrompts 1d ago

You can buy egg pans or even use a muffin top pan for the perfect eggs for breakfast sandwiches

1

u/DjinnaG Bags of sentient Midwestern mayonnaise 11h ago

We have a silicone tray (think it was sold as a whoopie pie thing) that we use for baking eggs for sandwiches. So damn good.

5

u/FickleCook3639 1d ago edited 1d ago

Oh, yeah, hotel buffet style baked scrambled eggs are fantastic. (edit: this is not sarcasm)

1

u/DjinnaG Bags of sentient Midwestern mayonnaise 11h ago

Try shirred eggs sometime, it’s like the eggs in McMuffin, only with a much better texture. Just crack an egg into something that will keep it round (like a muffin tin), add a little bit of milk or something on top with salt and pepper and bake for ten minutes and it’s a fancy breakfast for a tiny bit of effort

7

u/IWantToBuyAVowel 1d ago

On my way to flip my oven on its back because I never have a large enough pot

3

u/MagnusAlbusPater 1d ago

That fancy Gordon Ramsay method is really good though.

I do like my scrambled eggs creamy and just barely set.

3

u/optimal-moron 1d ago

His whole issue is stupid, but the pancake one also trips me up because those are famously cooked on griddles or a cast iron pan.

u/ma1butters 1d ago

I've been playing Control too much cause OOP means only one thing to me, now.

41

u/RGBlowMe 1d ago

There's certain things I'd only ever make in a non-stick pot. It really helps when you make berry sauces to stop clumps from sticking to the bottom and burning. Once something burns, it ruins the whole batch. I had a 5 quart batch of no sugar added blueberry sauce I must have made like half a dozen times and I had perfected (or so I thought) that ended up tasting literally smoked. It was kind of novel for like 2 cups worth before I couldn't stand it anymore. Ruined. That was in a large stainless pot, and I had only made it in non-stick previously.

13

u/DjinnaG Bags of sentient Midwestern mayonnaise 1d ago

Compotes, thank you, I knew there was something else that I exclusively make in a nonstick pot. It’s up there as one of the stickiest pot foods of all time

7

u/FixergirlAK 1d ago

I'm with y'all, anything high-sugar gets the non-stick. Especially caramel and rice krispy treats.

10

u/agoldgold 23h ago

I used to work in a kitchen and more than once literally scratched my fingerprints off with steel wool when something burnt to the bottom of a pot. That was AFTER soaking for a bit. So I do appreciate the luxury of leaving the pot on my counter overnight, smacking the bottom with a wooden spoon a couple times into the trashcan, and wash the basically-empty pot.

7

u/stefanica 1d ago

I also use mine for reheating cream soups and sauces. Otherwise I have to fool around with a double boiler.

8

u/Swimming-Spare-1373 1d ago

Non stick is for eggs, fish, and pancakes. THAT'S IT!

1

u/selphiefairy 11h ago

Yeah I’ve cooked fish in a pot too. It’s to make Vietnamese catfish which includes caramelizing the sauce. Usually you make it in a clay pot, but my mom always made hers in a nonstick pot, cause most of us don’t have a clay pot lol

Do they have ANY idea how hard is it to clean a burnt pot

27

u/LawfulNice 1d ago

Well, clearly he would never burn a pot. He's an expert, you see.

16

u/FeatherlyFly 1d ago

I burnt soup to charcoal once. It took me weeks of intermittent scrubbing to get that thing clean.

Also, use the timer on your phone, kids. That way even if you forget the stove is on and leave the house, you'll hear the timer go off and say "oh shit" before you evaporate several cups of liquid.

8

u/RobAChurch The Baroque excesses of tapas bars 1d ago

Sometimes during the winter I like to boil a pot of water, cinnamon, clove and lemon for humidity and I learned pretty quickly that timers are a must, no matter how good I think I am at topping it off.

4

u/agoldgold 23h ago

My parents absolutely ruined an old pot doing this. They were stuck opening all the windows to the winter night chill because the smell was horrendous!

2

u/Glad_Respect_8986 10h ago

My wife bought a cheap pot specifically for this. That way we don’t need to worry as much about it (aside from safety).

8

u/JackxForge 1d ago

Did this with a turkey carcass for broth. Went to bed with it on and my wife and I woke up with terrible headaches and dry sinuses. Took about a week to air out the house.

3

u/DjinnaG Bags of sentient Midwestern mayonnaise 1d ago

I’ve seen this happen to people who were boiling hot dogs, too

12

u/DjinnaG Bags of sentient Midwestern mayonnaise 1d ago

Especially with rice or oatmeal. Those can be hard to clean out without scrubbing even if it’s not burnt

12

u/Astr0C4t 1d ago

Soak in a mix of water and vinegar on low heat.

7

u/BickNlinko you would never feel the taste 1d ago

If what you burnt is reasonably water soluble the trick is to just boil water in it for a while and it will loosen the burnt shit up. This won't work with oil that has been polymerized on there, but it works pretty good for most stuff.

9

u/Zhuul 1d ago

Barkeeper's friend and about 30 seconds of scrubbing, stuff's like three bucks a can

Not validating the guy in the attached picture, but genuinely this stuff is a miracle for reviving crusty stainless steel cookware

8

u/wozattacks 1d ago

I’ve never had that much trouble with soaking them

8

u/OrthodoxAnarchoMom 1d ago

I recently bought a metal pit because it was cheaper and I apparently forgot other people cook so now I have a well soaked black bottom pot

4

u/ttw81 1d ago

baking soda also helps.

2

u/SufficientEar1682 Flavourless, textureless shite. 12h ago

The worst for me is caramel. I once made some and it burnt real bad, so I had to bin it (I did it safely and by the book don’t worry) Cleaning the pan was the most insanely difficult thing I ever did. I threw it in the bin and bought a new one. And then after that I never made caramel ever again. I always buy a tub from supermarket for this reason.

13

u/fe_iris 1d ago

Pro chef here, we use non sticks for a lot of applications. It's always stuck up home cooks who have an ego over non stick being bad

10

u/Katharinemaddison 15h ago

Well what’s wrong with eggs fish and pancakes? So long as not all three at once.

-1

u/Special_Artichoke 14h ago

You would cook them all in a pan, not a pot. Pots usually have liquid in so don't need to be nonstick. But if it's been manufactured then presumably there's a demand, perhaps porridge, that sets like concrete in my pan

3

u/snifflysnail 12h ago

I really like nonstick pots for things that are going to be saucy or sticky, like homemade BBQ sauce or mac & cheese. Makes cleanup really fast and easy.

1

u/therealgookachu 10h ago

Man, I’m lucky that my husband was given a set of old pyrex pots when he moved out a billion years ago (we’re GenX). Best stuff for cooking sticky sauces like that. Almost impossible to find the old Pyrex dishes anymore =(.

1

u/battlejess 12h ago

I was gifted a nonstick pot years ago and it was actually great for porridge, and I also used it for scrambled eggs, but when the coating got damaged I didn’t replace it. I can just leave the porridge in a regular pot for a couple minutes after cooking to unstick itself, and the eggs are fine in a pan (I just can’t stir quite as aggressively).

1

u/CreativeGPX 2h ago

The demand is likely people who are not good at things not sticking.

But also there are one pot meals where one stage might call for non stick but then after that you are adding lots of other stuff.

0

u/SaltyNorth8062 12h ago

Idk now that you mention it that could be like a steak and egg breakfast but with salmon? Like, what's that red meat allergy you get from tick bites? I could fuck that up.

8

u/Funkopedia 1d ago

Dude just listed 3 reasons to have a non stick pot...

1

u/NervousSnail 15h ago

Well you generally fry (pancakes and fish) in a pan.

Eggs, though. I got a non stick pot entirely for making scrambled eggs.

7

u/kovwas 1d ago

Nothing is more stimulating to me than hours of discussing how to acquire, maintain and clean the seasoning on a cast iron pan. Nothing, I tell you!

7

u/cookiesdragon 1d ago

Different pans/pots/skillets are meant for different things. Learning what is best used for those different things is part of learning to cook. Anyone who tries to claim non stick doesn't have a place among the varying types clearly is full of crap.

I use my dutch oven for soups/stews/dishes that need A LOT of space to cook properly. I'll break out the non stick skillet for bacon sometimes.

4

u/Divine_Entity_ 15h ago

And to anyone concerned about the health hazards of non-stick they are very easy to avoid: 1. Don't heat it to 500°F, which isn't a normal cooking temp and anything with water will clamp the temperature to 212°F. 2. Don't scrape the pan with metal cookware. 3. Don't use it if the coating is visibly damaged.

Treat it right and its fine, arguably less work than cast iron is made out to be. Alternatively they make ceramic coated cookware thats also very slippery/low stick.

4

u/cookiesdragon 14h ago

High heat is for searing. Anyone cooking at constant high heat needs to take some hands-on cooking classes. Wooden spoons and shit for the win. Also, rubber but I prefer wood because its firm enough to scrap up browned bits without doing damage.

Yeah, so many people ignore the damage and continue cooking with it. Which is not safe.

I love cast iron. My household has two. (my mom and I have a collection of fifteen but I moved across country and my new household only has two, one that I had brought.) I love them, use both all the time though the smaller one is specifically used for cornbread, biscuits, cinnamon rolls, etc. Usually don't mine cleaning them but when my chronic pain is flaring, I can't lift the big one to go clean it. So someone else in the household does or I just use another skillet and a pot for much easier clean up.

2

u/norecordofwrong 12h ago

Or just get ceramic. Thats what I have. All stainless and one ceramic. Ceramic is great for eggs.

2

u/threecuttlefish 10h ago

Man, I loooove ceramic-coated nonstick. It almost feels like cheating, it's so incredibly easy to clean up.

-3

u/SteveMarck 16h ago

IDK, I never really use the non-stick. What would you use it for?

Eggs and fish I would do on cast iron or stainless respectively. We never make pancakes exactly but when we make pancake shaped things we used a griddle over the stove. (Basically a Blackstone for inside)

I can't think of an instance where nonstick would be best. Maybe crisping cheese? Idk, I think I would do that in the oven/air fryer/broiler

5

u/cookiesdragon 14h ago

Bacon. Sometimes pancakes if I'm cooking for myself and not five. Grilled cheese, eggs, ham steak, sausage. Anything really. Sometimes I don't want to go through cleaning the cast iron so I'll grab the non stick. It'll do the exact same thing as a non non-stick.

Yeah, we have one of those too. Useful when making pancakes or panini sandwiches for five people. But if its just me, I don't drag it out because it's cast iron and sometimes I don't want to clean a cast iron thing.

0

u/SteveMarck 13h ago

You would do bacon in a non stick over a cast iron? No way. Cast iron is made for that. Same with a sandwich or buttered bread Griddle is best, but a big cast iron is just a griddle with walls.

4

u/cookiesdragon 12h ago

Look, I have chronic pain. My back is a mess. When I'm in a flareup, do you think hefting a large fifteen inch cast iron skillet and hauling it across a kitchen to clean is easy? I'll 100% go for non stick when or if I don't want to mess with the cast iron.

3

u/pnoodl3s 13h ago

ATK has a video of cooking steak using nonstick that turns out best. Also, any curry, or baked eggs dish is a godsend on nonstick. Or anything both sticky and acidic that can’t go on cast iron, like fish. Or any caramelization with sugar, like for chinese braised pork, would be best with nonstick

Lots of applications.

1

u/gnirpss 5h ago

I use my small ceramic nonstick for when I want to cook just one or two eggs for myself in the morning, which happens a lot. It's easier to clean when I'm in a hurry, and I like not having a dirty egg pan sitting in my kitchen for 10 hours while I'm at work. My husband is a much better cook than me, but he never cooks eggs in anything but the nonstick. It's just so light and easy to clean.

15

u/faelanae If you don't have tahini, dill works just fine 1d ago

I have quite a few La Creuset pots and pans and I'd consider them relatively non-stick. Even my cast iron. Guess I'm not capable of learning. OOP makes the rules 🤷🏻‍♀️

u/redandbluebadness 1d ago

They aren't non-sticl, don't be silly 😜

5

u/pikpikcarrotmon 1d ago

When they say non-stick they mean with the Teflon coating. Their opinion isn't really wrong, they're just being a raging asshole about it - your experience actually validates what they're saying. A properly seasoned cast iron pan, the enamel coating of a Le Creuset, or just proper temp control in stainless steel are all generally better choices because they can provide a "non-stick" experience as you described without actually having the flimsy coating of a non-stick pan/pot.

0

u/Accomplished_Mind792 1d ago

They aren't. That's the point. Those are what you should be using

15

u/CitizenMurdoch 1d ago

I have no negative opinions about people who use nonstick pots and pans (for Christ sake use non metal utensils thought) but is very funny to me that the line is eggs fish and pancakes. Like you can cook those in a stainless steel as well, its still just a skill issue. Like way to self report when you're trying to show off lol

5

u/SucksAtJudo 1d ago

The world is made for those not cursed with the gift of self awareness

3

u/JackxForge 1d ago

Yea i don't own a nonstick and still cook all that shit in my cast iron. White fish can be a bitch in cast iron.

5

u/Wolfburger123 1d ago

it's not really cooking unless 40% of the food remains as blackened residue permanently fused to the bottom of the pot. that's what makes it slidey

6

u/SomeNotTakenName 1d ago

The energy reminds me of a post I read through today because I was curious about rolling knife sharpeners.

Someone asked people's opinion, and 9/10 people launched into a "just learn to use a whetstone, it's not that hard" speech. The OP of that past was someone who currently uses a whetstone regularly, they just were curious.

6

u/WovenBloodlust6 1d ago

I feel like this has copypasta potential

5

u/katmndoo 1d ago

Wait until lakeboredom learns that you don't need non-stick for eggs, fish or pancakes. It's completely optional. For everything. Oh wait, I don't think he's mentally capable of learning. Never mind.

5

u/rapier1 1d ago

Dude has serious anger issues. Must be a delight. He also got banned from Reddit.

4

u/BeersNEers 1d ago

Good grief, this is about as deeply stupid as a thing can be.

14

u/MagnusAlbusPater 1d ago

My rice cooker’s pot is non-stick, as is my Instant Pot’s. Both work extremely well for what they do.

Really you’re not typically searing inside of a pot to any degree more than maybe putting a little color on some meat or onions before you add broth or other wet ingredients to make a stew and you can easily still do that with non-stick.

You won’t develop a fond but the ease of cleanup and lowered changes of burning something sticking to the bottom may well be worth it especially for newer cooks.

Getting some proper stainless steel and enameled cast iron is still worthwhile because they can last a lifetime and anything non-stick does have a limited usable life before the coating starts to deteriorate, but you can still make delicious food with non-stick pots and pans.

4

u/wozattacks 1d ago

I guess my rice cooker has a nonstick pot. My thought when I read the post was “there are nonstick pots?” I mean I own nonstick saucepans which I guess are kinda small pots

5

u/MagnusAlbusPater 1d ago

You can buy entire sets of non-stick cookware that come with everyone from pans, saucepans, to smallish stock pots all being non-stick.

I don’t think they’re particularly good deals because, as mentioned (and as the subject of the linked thread found out) those coatings do come off.

Still, keeping a single cheap non-stick pan around for the things non-stick is good at is always a good idea.

I know some people go on about how well-seasoned cast-iron can be just as non-stick and while it can get close it’s also heavy, not good for acidic sauces, and more difficult to clean since you can’t just toss it into the dishwasher.

4

u/DjinnaG Bags of sentient Midwestern mayonnaise 1d ago

People who say that about cast iron have an interesting definition of nonstick. Most all of our pots are from a set, as we were so happy with the pots from that brand that we bought the pot set as well the next time it went on sale at Costco , and those are all semi-nonstick, but definitely keep the one leftover nonstick pot we had on hand for the foods that need it

2

u/Zagaroth 21h ago

you can’t just toss it into the dishwasher.

I mean, I wouldn't do that to any pot or pan.

2

u/pnoodl3s 13h ago

Stainless can go in dishwasher. It saves a lot of scrubbing

12

u/SerDankTheTall *Giggled internally* 1d ago

I’ll admit that I don’t really understand the utility of a nonstick pot. But it makes a hell of lot more sense to me than getting mad at what cookware somebody else is using.

13

u/Dextron2-1 1d ago

For most people, it’s less about utility than it is availability. The super cheap pots aren’t non-stick, but people don’t trust the quality of the cheapest option. The nicer “sticky” pots are too expensive. Most of the readily available ones that are in that middle tier of price are non-stick.

8

u/lolafawn98 1d ago

the vast majority of people do not go to Reddit, YouTube, and cooking forums to spend hours researching the best kind of pot to buy. cooking isn’t their #1 hobby, if they consider it a hobby at all, and they don’t care about what the absolute best tool for every cooking job is. they go to the store and pick one that’s about the size they need. it’s mostly non stick on the shelves. who cares.

I’m sure that same person would be horrified at what OP has bought for some random purpose that happens to be an interest of theirs and not OP’s. but I bet that person wouldn’t feel the need to be such an ass about it!

8

u/MagnusAlbusPater 1d ago

Tramontina makes some quality affordable stainless steel stuff (though just looking at it on Amazon the prices have gone way up from what I paid for my set 3-4 years ago).

Are they as nice as the Made-In stuff? Heck no, but they’re durable, don’t warp, and get the job done.

4

u/gaygirlboss 1d ago

Can confirm that’s why I had mostly nonstick pots for awhile.

2

u/Dave_A480 1d ago

For most people it's about the pot not having stuff get baked on easily, and coming clean in the dishwasher without pre washing.

2

u/barkbarkkrabkrab 23h ago

I try not evangelize too hard on this, but yes its true that ditching or reducing non stick pans and slowly investing in stainless and cast iron, will save you significant amounts of money. But i admit for a lot of people, its a big swing to invest in cookware most people find less convenient until they take the time to master it.

11

u/DjinnaG Bags of sentient Midwestern mayonnaise 1d ago

They are a helluva lot easier to clean if you’re making something thicker than stew

9

u/pnoodl3s 1d ago

Yeah, try making japanese curry, or chinese egg baked dishes on stainless pots and see how fun cleaning afterwards is.

Scientifically, nonstick is completely harmless, the harms come from the manufacturing process. Like even pipes are attached with pfas tapes. Lots of fast food wrappers are nonstick

5

u/humanistazazagrliti 19h ago

But what if cleaning pots is like 60% of your hobbies? ;D

2

u/Remarkable_Gene_9158 20h ago

That's IF you use it properly, and you're buying your cookware AND utensils from a reputable source, which isn't a given in the age of Temu

1

u/PlanSee 9h ago

I don't really care whether someone wants to use nonstick pots but I make japanese curry in stainless every 2 weeks or so and I have 0 issues cleaning lol

-1

u/Remarkable_Gene_9158 20h ago

So long as the cooking surface is flat, stainless steel is no harder to clean IME... honestly easier to clean if you don't care about how it looks cause you can just get in there with a knife unlike with a nonstick surface

1

u/DjinnaG Bags of sentient Midwestern mayonnaise 11h ago

Nonstick surfaces come clean with a sponge and soapy water. Much easier than anything resembling scrubbing

8

u/SheepPup 1d ago

Personally in the fall and winter I make a lot of dumpling soups with frozen dumplings. In my stainless steel pot I always end up with at least one or two exploded dumplings from where the wrapper stuck to the bottom of the pot and then ripped itself open as I stirred (and then when I’m done I have to scrub that little chunk of dough off the bottom) in my nonstick pot that doesn’t happen.

5

u/Zagaroth 21h ago

We got a set of very nice, expensive non-stick pots and pans from some friends who were moving out of the country.

My wife now scalds milk in the nonstick because it doesn't leave as much behind. (this is for use in making bread after it cools)

She's also used the big one to make ricotta, and that seemed to clean out a lot easier than when she used the enameled dutch oven.

Really, anything with enough starch or proteins to possibly stick to the bottom or sides.

2

u/norecordofwrong 12h ago

Man homemade ricotta is so easy and it really is better than store bought.

3

u/pakapab 1d ago

They are more nonstick than stainless, so makes a nice complement to have nonstick skillet handy.

-3

u/SerDankTheTall *Giggled internally* 1d ago

I don’t use nonstick pans, but I understand why someone would want them. Wanting a nonstick pot seems odd to me.

But I also really have a hard time getting worked up over whether or not someone else is using the same pots that I do.

2

u/UnseenTardigrade 5h ago

I find it very strange this comment got downvoted

1

u/norecordofwrong 12h ago

I mean I have a Dutch oven that’s basically a nonstick pot.

3

u/Silent-Paramedic 1d ago

im poor as fuck. i cant afford new pans. im stuck with the old non stick that sticks. its good enough

4

u/whimsical_spider 13h ago

“Why do you own a non stick pot!!”

::proceeds to list ways to use a non stick pot::

2

u/FlattopJr 10h ago

I think they're listing ways to use a non stick pan as opposed to a pot.

2

u/ArrrcticWolf 12h ago

If I can cook it on a pan then I can cook it in a pot. Yes there is the “right tool for the job” but that also doesn’t limit you to only using the most efficient cookware for a specific task.

Knowing how to cook things regardless of having the best cookware option for it is a very good skill to have.

4

u/HonkHonkBeach 1d ago

I do think non-stick pots are a scam personally. All my pots are stainless steels.

But this guy? Insufferable. Better to give the advice than just try and neg them into taking it like some sort of Andrew Tate sounding dumbass.

6

u/pakapab 1d ago

Go try to make a can of corned beef hash in your stainless pot, you'll see why having a nonstick/cast iron/carbon steel pan can be useful.

2

u/HonkHonkBeach 1d ago

I would do that in my non-stick pan most likely.

Notice I said pots only, I have 3 non stick pans in addition to my 3 stainless steel pans, my 4 stainless steel pots, my cast iron skillet, and my carbon steel wok.

2

u/RealMcGonzo 1d ago

I make eggs in my iron frying pan. Works great!

2

u/DjinnaG Bags of sentient Midwestern mayonnaise 1d ago

OOP’s problem wasn’t so much using a nonstick pot as it was overheating their roux. And/or everything else that they had previously used the pot for, because that kind of damage is hard to do with a single dish. Pots are mainly used for things with a high water content that you want to keep high (or else you would use the increased surface area of a pan), so they really shouldn’t be getting anywhere near the temperature where nonstick starts to fail. There’s well over 100° F between boiling and the danger zone for nonstick to play with

2

u/3mptyspaces 1d ago edited 1d ago

I put 5 layers of seasoning on my cast iron pans every couple of years, you can slide eggs all day on them.

I also have three ceramic non-stick pans. They’re great, too, and not just for eggs and pancakes. I like making quesadillas on my non-stick skillet, because I can slide it around easily on a thin slick of oil for a nice crust, and it weighs 1/4 of what my cast-iron skillets do.

2

u/Remarkable-Secret638 23h ago

Can anyone tell me what this person is trying to say? It makes no sense to me. Perhaps he's telling everyone not to cook eggs, fish and pancakes?

3

u/NervousSnail 15h ago

They are saying those things are fried in pans. Not cooked in pots. So a non stick pan would make sense, but not a pot.

They clearly never cook scrambled eggs.

1

u/JasperJ 15h ago

Scrambled eggs go in stainless, what?

3

u/NervousSnail 14h ago

Real bitch to clean mine.

1

u/SufficientEar1682 Flavourless, textureless shite. 12h ago

Why are people so rude. Not everyone wants to be the next Escoffier. Non stick has more than one use.

1

u/IndependentTap3961 12h ago

Why are they so fucking mad omg.

1

u/TrasseTheTarrasque 12h ago

"Do you get to the Cloud District very often? Oh never mind, of course you don't" ass comment

1

u/reereejugs 11h ago

I use cast iron for most things but there are non-stick skillets and pots in the house.

1

u/custardcreams 10h ago

<laughs in bread sauce>

Honestly, this takes so long to infuse you would be crazy to not use nonstick.

1

u/Square_Ring3208 10h ago

Yeah fuck them for buying something available at target

1

u/Electroid_Blue 10h ago

Or...use fat.

1

u/Thunderer62 7h ago

On a personal level I agree. I have one nonstick that is only for eggs and pancakes and that’s it. You don’t gotta be a dick though.

1

u/dtwhitecp 22h ago

there's this weird middle ground between using a nonstick pan for everything, thinking a nonstick pan is only for specific things like eggs and fish, and using any pan for anything.

So to probably add another post to this same subreddit - this dude is a clown if he thinks you can't use stainless for eggs, fish, or pancakes, and is mentally incapable of learning.

but also why does he think there are legitimate uses but in the same sentence say you can't own one?

2

u/NervousSnail 15h ago

Pot vs pan.
