Nothing has been more egregiously “abused” in recent years than the thesaurus

Let’s put that in simplified language:
“I like harassing rape victims”
Huh. Sounds way worse when you don’t dress it up in pseudo-intellectualism.

Dude, what? This is not exactly an advanced vocabulary here.

u/Unicycleterrorist 16d ago
Yea how they said it is perfectly fine. What they said is the issue here lol

u/HumanContinuity 15d ago
I think maybe both, but I'll give you 70/30 on problematic content vs composition

It's not that the language is too complicated, it's that he's saying nothing with way too many words.

What he’s saying is that our society excessively protects the anonymity of victims, he’s just using way more words than are necessary to say it.
I’m guessing that it’s a bit clearer in context, but I feel like the amount of text he took to say it makes it feel like it should say more.

Yeah, we know what he said, there’s no need for you to translate it from English->English, the guy is a creep

There’s just too many words that aren’t necessary and were clearly added for the sake of sounding smarter. It makes it difficult to read

u/MontcliffeEkuban 16d ago
Which words don't you think are necessary?

“Egregiously” is unnecessary considering “nothing has been more abused”. “Ridiculous” and “ideologically-driven” are loaded. “Any and all” - this one is obvious

u/BlunderIsMyDad 16d ago
Ridiculous, self proclaimed, ideologically driven -> ideological etc. but I agree that the word choice isn't really the issue here.

u/Scrawlericious 16d ago
The ones where he implied rape victims aren’t entitled to anonymity.
This worm’s entire existence is unnecessary.

The words communicate either the topic, his opinion, or a possible cause. Nothing is wasted there.
1
u/Aggrivated5hark 15d ago
Plenty wasted. The first "abuse" establishes it, the second is redundant. In recent years can be recently. Ridiculous is unnecessary as the tone has already been set. Ideologically-driven can just be ideologic. Any and all can be all. Not to mention the depravity of the position held.
2
u/Parrotparser7 15d ago
And which of these were "clearly added for the sake of sounding smarter"?
2
u/Aggrivated5hark 15d ago
...All of it? There is a clear and lengthy history of verbosity equaling intelligence. Choosing to ignore it is lame.

u/Parrotparser7 15d ago
We need a reason to believe that's what motivated the post. It's very cool that you found a social trend that aligns with your preferred narrative, but leave it there.

u/Aggrivated5hark 10d ago
I see no reason to believe that it was natural. It is quite cool, the social trend provides the simplest and most likely explanation. Should we ignore the ever present social trend that likely explains the post or guess?

u/Ryanaston 10d ago
It definitely reads smug and condescending but that’s more because of the content matter, not the vocabulary usage. If they’d used similar language to a contrary opinion, it would be fine.
I think anyone who doesn’t understand that a rape victim deserves anonymity, probably isn’t very intelligent.

This isn't abuse of a thesaurus. He explained what he meant perfectly well, he's just wrong.

u/Davajita 16d ago
This person’s fairly average vocabulary is not what we should be criticizing.
1
u/Available_Border1075 9d ago
It’s not great diction though, for example he could’ve just said ‘ideological’ instead of ‘ideologically-driven’
5
u/old_homecoming_dress 16d ago
as we all know, the real victims in a rape case aren't the people who were raped. it's the people who want to find them for their own benefits.

if you abuse a presumption, doesn't that mean you're actually doing the opposite.

I feel personally attacked by this one. This is almost exactly how I would word this. 😅
I mean, if I held such a questionable view. 🤨

What he tried to communicate but hilariously failed to in order to sound intellectual: People who call themselves victims shouldn't have anonymity and basic personal privacy.
That's literally it. 🤦

The true horrors of our time: anonymity for victims. Especially by this oh so cowardly media, who doxxes each and everyone for a couple clicks. What a moron.
