Helping Others After learning about Magdalena closing I decided to start woking on a flyer encouraging support for Fountain Square businesses. Definitely needs design work and more places added as well, but I wanted to put a rough draft out there for anyone who might be interested in posting something like this.

Went to a show at the White Rabbit last night and it was PACKED - more so than it has been the past few months during construction, I hope that it keeps up because I was worried for a while.

You forgot Indy Reads!

Love this!! Hidden Peak Collective and Rooftop fruit are both closed (I believe rooftop will be starting a delivery service soon though). Goldie & Company is a gift shop located next to Harmony Tea Shoppe. They sell goods from local artists and makers.

I believe Art Squared is an event that happens yearly and not a physical location. I wish Ft Square had a craft store. I’m still mourning Mystery Fun Club.

Yup, Art Squared and the Masterpiece in a Day competition are a day-long annual event on the third Saturday in September

Less is more. Maybe make a few different fliers (same layout and style to save time) that group similar shops together? This looks like an osha required sign from a distance

Yeah. Maybe get rid of the parentheses? Separate businesses into 4 categories & do quadrants?

There's too much going on & you'd have to be practically on top of it to read it.

Thank you! I wanted to do something like this.

Radio radio will never make sense to me. They’re open maybe once a year?

3

u/Jannell 3d ago

It INFURIATES me. Especially as so many venues have closed.

3

u/FutureEditor Fountain Square 3d ago

I'm gonna be honest, I didn't think they were even open, I have never been inside

u/skinsurff 2d ago

They usually open for tonic ball. Waste of a good space.

Rooftop fruit is closed now :( but throw zodiac vintage on here!

u/Angry_Pineapple1 3d ago

Highly recommend zodiac their selection is awesome! A bit on the higher end of price but it’s good stuff. And they’re so pleasant in there!

u/kisses4beergirl 3d ago

Also, On the rocks is owned by Loco so I think they’ll be fine.

You should reach out to fountain square neighborhood association for help they have an instagram

u/ThinkInSolitude 3d ago

FFDAINDY is the Instagram of the business partnership for the neighborhood for anyone interested.

They post events for the area, mention closures, business openings, etc,. Great resource that's unfortunately underutilized.

shout out as well to Artesenal Pasteleria Panaderia (Mexican bakery with great tamales and ice cream) and the original location of The Cavity Factory (cookies, cinnamon rolls, whatever Destinee is making is guaranteed to be delicious). they’re both just down the street from Goodwill/Nine Lives Cat Cafe 🥰

Versed skateboard shop is a great locally owned business that is very involved with the community. Sells clothing, shoes, etc. not just skateboards. Highly recommend if you haven’t been in there.

u/Reggie_Popadopoulous 2d ago

2nd that. I've known the owner since the first location and the effort he's put into local events, pop ups at skateparks, helping kids get into skating, etc. is inspiring. He's the kind of dude I wish was involved in the skate community when I was a kid.

Art Squared is an annual festival every September, not a craft store.

Compiling local businesses is the core of the Fountain Fletcher District Association. Check them out @ffdaindy https://fountainfletcher.com/

If you could, add Action and Atomic Bowl (Duckpin Bowling), Fountainview Inn, and Fountain Square Theatre!

6

u/burnitdown71 Bates-Hendricks 3d ago

Throw the Fountain Square Barbershop on there too.

Def deserves a spot. Matthew does so much to the neighborhood.

u/DoctorTeawater 3d ago

Really like this idea and this list but are your businesses all up to date? Does Lily’s Soap Kitchen still exist somewhere? I thought they closed in like 2017

7

u/expatronis 3d ago

Yeah. Really consider whether you want to keep these or end up with nothing but shitty chains who don't spend their corporate dollars in Indy at all, let alone a historic neighborhood.

u/climber89 Fountain Square 3d ago

Love this! Thank you!! We need the support

2

u/thewimsey 3d ago

It's really helpful that you made a list - I'm often in the mood to try something new and being able to look at a list like that is much faster than using google maps or something.

I can 100% vouch for Indy String Theory and Arthur’s Music. Both are incredible businesses run by amazing people.

2

u/Fearless__Nectarine 3d ago

i would consider geraldine’s supper club and lounge part of fountain square.

8

u/Paul_Langton St. Clair Place 3d ago

As well as Sam's Silver Circle

u/kylerxvx 2d ago

FS isn’t really my stomping grounds but wanting to take my sister to Siam Square this weekend. Can we get to it easily?

Kuma’s Corner, Zodiac Vintage, Indy Reads, Indy String Theory

9 Lives Vintage and Fountain Square Barbershop

Crazy how little love Howl + Hide gets in this place. Such a cool spot with a bunch of cool product that is actually made in Indy by fellow Indy folks.

u/squishyslinky 2d ago

I took a shot at designing this for you and brought it into Google SLides so you can edit if you want. Kept it printer-friendly for ya.
Just go to File > Make a Copy

Zodiac vintage. Two girls that have been around the square in various avenues for close to two decades if not more

1

u/Redshiftedanthony3 3d ago

Didn't this place close because of the major flooding that happened? They refused the contractor help that the city supplied them with, is my understanding.

I love Fountain Square, and in general, I do think we shpuls continue to support most of the businesses there. But some of them are closing because of external reasons.

u/podgay 3d ago

I know compiling all of this into one map would make things too crowded, but maybe creating maps for different kinds of businesses (restaurants, cafes, shops) that way it saves viewers the step of looking a place up in a maps app

u/Mother_Ingenuity3809 2d ago

What a shame, we did their window graphics last year, i remember the city giving the owner issues over how big the graphics can be. the city did magdelena dirty.

u/slytherin_whitefox 2d ago

Retrograde appeal should definitely be on this list

u/NoCat8234 3d ago

Which ones are blue businesses?

5

u/cormacredfield 3d ago

In this area, it’d be easier to find out who isn’t blue

0

u/Shitty_Paint_Sketch 3d ago

I thought Bova and Black House both had a red reputation?

Go to Calvin Fletchers or Amberson for better coffee and community.

2

u/rulnacco 3d ago

I agree with your last sentence. But I’m not sure about your take on Bovaconti. I know one of the baristas, and he at least is about as liberal as they come. I have definitely heard some not so nice things about Black House’s ownership.

0

u/Shitty_Paint_Sketch 3d ago

Funny enough, it was one of the baristas at Bova that warned me about the owners.

1

u/rulnacco 2d ago

Haha! Might be the same person.

1

u/expatronis 3d ago

Pretty safe to assume all of these, at least openly. It's Fountain Square.

It's entirely possible to do both.

0

u/rulnacco 3d ago

And you’re one of those All Lives Matter! shriekers, I’d suppose.

1

u/Tall-Wealth9549 2d ago

Nah, I bet you have ‘back the blue’ on your jeep. Don’t crawl to reddit and act liberal, get offline and go live. And be nice.

0

u/rulnacco 2d ago

Lolz, dear. Take your own advice it's stellar. You've prescribed your own medicine.

u/captainfreewill 3d ago

Since you need an upgraded design, I fed it into ChatGPT. Then my thumb got stuck in my ear but I'll post it as soon as I can get it out

1

u/Senior_Weather_3997 1d ago

It actually doesn’t need design work. Form should follow function and this functions.
