Sure but don't think assault is going crazy?

u/Falkenmond79 Aug 03 '26
Seriously. When have we become a society, where every light touch has become assault? THIS is the crazy part.

Context:
The heckler was repeatedly shouting, "Sean is your daddy!" or "Aljamain is your daddy!" while pointing and laughing at Merab. He was referencing Merab's upcoming opponent at the time, Sean O'Malley, and Merab's close friend and teammate, Aljamain Sterling.According to Merab Dvalishvili's own account of the exchange, the conversation went as follows:The Heckler: Kept shouting the taunts from the stands.Merab: Turned around, looked him in the eyes, and said, "Shut up" and "Come here and say it to my face".The Heckler: Refused to come down, but continued laughing and pointing.Merab: After giving three warnings, climbed the scaffolding into the stands and demanded, "Tell me now".The Heckler: Immediately froze, put his hands up, and said, "No, no, please"

u/things_U_choose_2_b Aug 03 '26
The heckler got off lucky, Merab might have held him down for a decision.
82
u/FigoTheAWD Aug 03 '26
And the heckler would have enjoyed every last cent Merab has made when a judge makes him hand it over
13
u/Formal-Victory3161 Aug 03 '26
In some places you could still consider what he did as assault. Any kind of unwanted touching like that can be considered assault. Not sure how far you'd get in court with something like that though. Judge might just dismiss it
13
u/OkConfidence5080 Aug 04 '26
Not to be Mr “Ackshually” but he committed assault the moment he walked up menacingly. Then he committed battery by grabbing his hair/head.

u/Silly_Strike_1000 Aug 03 '26
At that point you have him arrested for assault and battery then sue for 100k in damages. Dudes who can't control their temper on camera pay for it in court if the victim smart about it

u/pinkzm Aug 03 '26
Assault and battery for what? I'm confused, didn't he just tickle his hair?
13
38
u/Cw3538cw Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 04 '26
You're getting downvoted, but that's a reasonable misunderstanding. It seems like the reason this would qualify is that many regulations include the phrasing "infliction of harmful or offensive physical contact with another person without consent". So the argument would be that this constitutes offensive physical contact
33
10
3
u/IDKandfranklyIDC Aug 06 '26
If I came up to you and started to tickling your hair, even after you repeatedly shook your head and verbally told me no, would I be in the wrong? Even if you were calling me a poopy head beforehand? Do I then have the right to rub my hands all over your face and put my fingers in your mouth? You were calling me a poopy head, so it's clearly not assault.
3
u/pinkzm Aug 06 '26
Yeah you'd be in the wrong, but is that assault? I understand assault to be:
An assault is a violent physical or verbal attack, or a legal wrong involving an intentional threat or attempt to cause physical harm.
I wouldn't call this violent. Maybe my definition is wrong. I'm not defending the guys actions, just that the idea of suing for 100k "damages" (what damages??) for this sounds ludicrous to me
1
u/angusyoungii Aug 06 '26
Punitive. The only way dudes like this stop doing stuff like this and learn to control themselves is by losing money for doing it.

u/Yiplzuse Aug 03 '26
My favorite was when the idiot hockey fans dumped their beers on the players in the penalty box and the guys climbed over the glass and kicked their ass.

u/eastamerica Aug 03 '26
Proves to me a lot of these fighters are actually violent hotheads. Not just “great athletes” or “great at fighting” they’re hotheads who have tempers and they arm their tempers with muscles and training.
What that guy did right there was battery. He touched that dude. In many US states you can win a 150-250k battery charge with less evidence than that video.
Fucking idiot.
19
u/Arndt3002 Aug 03 '26
Tbh, with nominal damages like that you're not likely to get more than $500-5000

I mean think about that, what type of peope is going to fight for sport/fame/money....

u/sBucks24 Aug 03 '26
Idk man, I'd be seeing dollar signs lighting up in this scenario. My shit talking would have increased... Especially when he's only one good shove away from falling backwards down stairs... Not exactly the smartest plan from the serial concussed fighter being baited by a nobody 🤷

u/phome83 Aug 03 '26

Gotta pull out the “what are you gonna do, hit me?”

You realize how easy it is to lose your balance walking up stairs, right? Now try arena stairs...
It's not about staying taking them off their feet, it's about taking them take even a half of a half step backwards

u/sBucks24 Aug 03 '26
He wouldn't have had to 🤷 dudes one seat from end, and it's not like falling backwards over stadium chairs is any better outcome for the fighter. Just stick your foot up and in between you and him, and if he goes to grab you/swing at you - extend.

u/Jubatus750 Aug 03 '26
Ah yes, of course, just take down the professionally trained fighter, it's that easy.... You think he isn't gonna see a kick from some random person coming a mile off?
1
u/sBucks24 Aug 03 '26
I'm not having the exact same convo I literally just replied to... I never said "take down". Use your eyes and reading comprehension, please...

laws may compensate you, but they do not make you invincible.
7
u/Arndt3002 Aug 03 '26
Lol, he's not going to literally fucking die or get maimed
And anything short of that's just going to increase the financial compensation for battery
Tbh, anything short of death or a tbi would be worth it when you know the guy is good for it in court

u/Alex-Murphy Aug 03 '26
The small ones scare me more, they're fast as fuck
16
u/owa00 Aug 03 '26
They should ALL scare you because this is their profession. The average person has never really been in a serious fist fight, or at best train as a hobby and spar. It's like watching those YouTube videos of the worst NBA player vs the best street ballers or weekend warriors. They ALL get smoked. It'll be like that whether they're small or big.
3
u/hammertime2009 Aug 03 '26
100%. I used to train amateur boxing and have done plenty of sparring with big ass 16oz gloves and head guards. Shit is fucking exhausting and fucking hurts and even at the amateur level guys can be deadly. These UFC guys are on a whole different level. Prosecutors love to upgrade assault charges to felonies if you’ve been formally trained in martial arts.

My man, do you know the word "more"?
Handguns scare me but assault rifles scare me more.
15
u/ThatBarbGirl Aug 03 '26
Key word here should be "professional." Many people can fight. This guy is one of the few making a living from it and should really consider bringing his emotional regulation above that of a pre-teen.
By the time you become an adult, a professional, you should be able to handle verbal insults or laughter without losing control of yourself. This is embarrassing. And not for the heckler.

Obviously, I'm not dumb enough to ever say that to their faces. Some might call that cowardice, I call it common sense.

Hahs, this guy is a joke. I wouldn't have this guy touch me without consequence. Whatever it may end up being.. got quite some fighting under the belt. I may not win, but he doesnt escape unharmed..
A the same time I wouldn't have been the guy that started heckling this dude..
Still super unprofessional for a professional fighter.

Don't go too hard on him... that poor guy can not only hear the Sun rise with those ears, but he can probably hear every heckler in that entire arena. He's probably just got a bad case of sensory overload.
With that said, he should have just flapped them bad boys a couple times and he wouldn't have struggled over that barrier.

Why are so many comments focused on how this situation is a cash-grabbing opportunity? It’s literally a story of one piece of shit and another person who can’t control himself taunting an obvious sport and threatening violence.
How someone turns it into “ohhh, it’s great, I will endure a punch and sue him with trillions moneys”, it’s so pitiful way of thinking.

u/Solvyr31 Aug 03 '26
The amount of delusional people here believes they can fight Merab, insane how overconfident redditors can be.

Easiest rage bait of all time. How you gonna be such a bad ass fighter and so easily triggered by words.
1
u/mercyspace27 Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 05 '26
Why do people feel the need to be jackasses? Especially to trained fighters?
Yeah, people have tempers, and if you push them, they will lose said tempers. Big shock.
Maybe just don’t be an asshole? I see a lot of people going at Merab, but maybe if the heckler kept his mouth shut and simply didn’t act like a jackass to a man HE DID NOT KNOW, NONE of this would have happened.
Actions have consequences, who would have guessed?!
Sorry but I’m sick of people always going at the people who stop taking shit after clearly being instigated and going “Oh my god, such psycho behavior” but never looking at the instigator and going “Hey, how about you don’t be an asshole”. It’s like a different level of a kid beating up their bully and you punishing the kid that stood up for themself.
Fucking hate this shit.
Edit: If the people who keep downvoting this would like to explain their opinion, I’m very open to hearing how you feel that someone is allowed to be a jackass but they’re free from consequences? What is this, a bird’s of a feather type situation?

u/RogueIMP Aug 09 '26
Looks to me like the Pro fighter is a Bitch, if he can't take some mean word...

Redditors when they see a guy confront his heckler and makes him shut up: "No this is too masculine for me and makes me uncomfortable! He should've stood there and take it! The heckler did nothing wrong! Peak male fragility!"

u/AV48 Aug 04 '26
Not surprised the losers on here are backing the heckler. Loved the way that piece of shit recoiled when he realised that barrier was not a force field. If you can't say something to someone's face, don't say it at all
