It's not ideal for sure, but the amateur filmmaker in me can admire someone attempting to do something practically for a shot. The part that's really concerning is that it appears the was just wearing the pants with no protective layers underneath, not using a slow burning substance coat, and not having a fire extinguisher immediately on hand..

Maybe 10 years ago it was hard. All fire you see on tv is after effects, They don't use real fire anymore and haven't in a long time. Even fireplaces on sets is after effects.

This is not true at all, real burns are still done and there's a ton of safety involved. Fire is really hard to get right with CGI, it's not just simulating the fire but also roto work, colour work to get exposure to match the rest of the shot. Not to mention if the CGI fire has to light a practical element in the scene...

Edit: that's not to say there isn't a ton of CGI fire as well, almost definitely more so than practical fire. I more just wanted to point out that real fire is still used. Not to say you said it but discarding something as "simply" CGI takes away from a lot of extremely hard work done in the background.

I used to work at a hotdog stand and in winter we were provided propane heaters to keep warm. I would show up in my carhearts so I would point it twords the customers. Well one drunk guy was just leaning into it as I shot the shit with his friends. His jeans started on fire and I ran around the cart and put him out.
