If it makes you feel better, my dog (who I literally rescued from the desert) began GNAWING on my toes as if I wouldn't notice. When she realized that I indeed noticed her basically eating my toes (her whole mouth was over my big toe) she pretended to yawn and began sweetly licking my toes as if to say "I wasn't eating your foot, I was just cleaning you"

Neat fact: Most pets who eat their dead owners do it within 2-3 hours of death and usually start with the soft parts of the face. The more you know!

Mine either. Most have definitely already taken a chunk out of me at some point or another when they were younger, and one when she started having cognitive decline in her old age. She would wake me up in the middle of the night biting my face and it hurt so bad I bled like crazy. Maybe she thought I was dead. But she was senile :(

Iirc the longest cats will wait is 2-3 days and the longest dogs will wait is 2-3 weeks
13
u/IveComeHomeImSoCold Apr 23 '26
In a quarter of cases dogs start munching their dead owner in the first 24 hours…so at least roughly 25% will know to eat while the meats at least still good. 2-3 weeks is disgusting.
Edit to add that clearly it’s all disgusting but if an animal is going to eat something dead I’d at least hope they’d be more like a cat about it and eat it in the first 2-3 days…
9
u/nameproposalssuck Apr 24 '26
Dogs can eat carrion but I guess these cases do rather happen when the dog is locked in with its dead owner and has no other food source.
They don't wait that long to eat, they try to avoid eating as long as possible.

Yup. I worked very briefly in our county morgue when I was in college and thought I wanted to work in forensics. My job was to basically shadow the coroner, take notes, equipment handling, etc. We had a man come in whose face was missing. Just the face. Including his eyeballs and most of his tongue.
He died of a heart attack and his poodle ate his face. This all happened in around 48 hours. So his dog wasn’t starving. The coroner said that the dog was likely licking his face in an attempt to wake him (awww) and eventually broke the skin and the rest was nature taking over (ewwww).
Now, in my case I have cats. They routinely wake by gnawing on a finger or toe and act disappointed when I wake up. So I know that it’s only a matter of time.→ More replies (63)11

That looks like a Belgian Mallinois which are essentially freaks you have to tire out or they will eat you (jk)
They can be called "Malligaters" for these air chomps which normally is a signal of excitement or pent up energy.
So yeah all the above

Daily constitutional, mosey, wander, adventure, jaunt, step, circuit, march, perambulation, promenade, ramble, saunter, traipse, schlepp. :)
If you choose 3 of them and rotate between, maybe your dog won't be able to learn them because there won't be a single consistent word used for walk.

This is the shit I have to do for my mini Aussie too! "A jaunty stroll" "An adventure through the neighborhood"
For letting him out back it's things like, "the realm beyond". "the land beyond the glass door"..
I can't even say "Hey (person) can you--" because if I do he thinks he's getting a treat, food, out, or a walk!
We also do some weird Elizabethan English nonsense. "Canst thou escort mine beast on a tour of the neighborhood?"
....I think he's starting to catch on to that too though....

We have to do that with “food”, “treat”, “snack”, “dinner”, “hungry”, “starving”.
Our dog wants desperately to be a fat kid. It’s his life dream. He would eat enough to kill himself given the opportunity. He even chews while dreaming so I like to think he’s dreaming of lying in a pool filled with snausages, filet mignon, and salmon.

My 8 y/o son will complain our mal bit him. I’m like, no she’s just grabbing you for attention. If she bit you there’d be a bloody stump where your arm used to be. First time she met our cat when he was a kitten she engulfed his entire head with her mouth before I could react. So gentle though the cat didn’t even stop purring. She’s a good dog.

I teach first grade. The kids all wash their hands in one common sink area with mirrors above the sink. I stand in the middle and watch them in the mirrors to make sure they’re behaving and actually washing their hands. One of the boys asked me why I was always looking at myself in the mirror. I told him no honey, I’m looking at all of you. Then I made eye contact with each one of them in the mirrors. Watching the collective realization wash across their faces was hilarious! Shock and awe. Now we make eye contact and silly faces on the mirrors and giggle at each other.

This video was posted somewhere else a few days ago and a commenter there who claimed they were a vet said it was the equivalent of a teenager giving their parents the finger when they turn around. Like the dog was pissy about something, not actually aggressive and it was venting.
779
u/namis_tangerines Apr 22 '26
Totally. It’s also a malinois which are notorious for their attitudes and snapping at the air/clacking their jaws when they’re excited or pissed. I have a border collie and she does the same thing, and it runs in the breed. Not anything spooky like what the other commenters are saying lol.

u/CultCorvidae Apr 22 '26

It’s so funny people think it’s something aggressive, my collie girl catches the craziest attitude when she wants to play and snaps at the air and lets out little ‘HMMPH!’s, but she would never, EVER even THINK about biting me. You just get that in mouthy working breeds.
→ More replies (1)21
u/PipsqueakPilot Apr 22 '26
Makes sense. Both are breeds that use their teeth a lot for work which does mean 'bite reluctance' is not as strongly ingrained. Malinois for chomping, Border Collies for nipping and herding.
I had a Kangal, and they were sort of the opposite. Massive amounts of bite reluctance, so when they started doing air chops it was a sign of, "This dog is one step away from showing you what these teeth are for."
Only actually saw it once though- when he was a tiny 80 pound, 5 month old puppy and some collies were trying to herd him with nips.

When we were little kids my brother and I loved pretending we were going to take our Brittany Spaniel’s food dish from him, and this otherwise docile dog would snap and growl like he was going to rip out throats out. Which our dumb little asses found hilarious.
He never actually bit us, even when he would lunge as though he was going to. Either way, don’t ever “joke” with dogs this way. Making them food-insecure could actually make them snap and eventually bite a person or other pet that’s eyeing their meal.

Cujo was devastating to the Saint Bernard breed when the movie came out. As an owner and lover of the breed it took a very long time for people to move on and not believe these gorgeous gentle giants weren’t all dangerous blood thirsty dogs. Up until that time my boys always received lots of positive attention. Afterwards even at a distance people were terrified of them. 😥

“It would perhaps not be amiss to point out that he had always tried to be a good dog. He had tried to do all the things his MAN and his WOMAN, and most of all his BOY, had asked or expected of him. He would have died for them, if that had been required. He had never wanted to kill anybody. He had been struck by something, possibly destiny, or fate, or only a degenerative nerve disease called rabies. Free will was not a factor.”

May be teeth related. My Jack Russel did this and a few teeth had to be taken out

Especially when you run the camera all night and the dog does it for 6 straight hours.

Now it came back full circle Reddit is so wild. This was posted yesterday to paranormal and it got pooped on because theirs nothing creepy or paranormal about a stressed dog. Some posted this here and now it’s creepy lol. The circle of Reddit. Also it is most likely a dog that needs more attention and care.

I mean, it's not paranormal. But people on a sub about paranormalities are probably primed for scary stuff, more so than people browsing r/all

Actually in the Dog threads this also made its professional rounds and most people came to the conclusion that the dog does this because they're testing out what they can and can not do. In this scenario, knowing that the dog is thinking about it and now has been caught doing this action, training and training and retraining came to mind. GSD's are thinkers and need to be kept busy with a task.

I don't see how that is a circle at all. It is creepy, and it's not paranormal. Those are not the same thing.

This is a Malinois, it looks like an older dog, and this movement is a characteristic of the breed. I have 2. Most likely it thinks its a game, has something stuck, is neurological, or discomfort/pain.
If it was aggression - this is an attack type dog and there wouldn't be hesitation. This seems to be something behavioral but not inherently dangerous.

Agreed. I have two malinois, as well. This is just him/her being goofy imo. Mine do this stuff.

If this is them goofing around, I'd hate to see them mad.

Saw a vets comment about it being the equivalent of a teenager flipping off his mom behind her back. If he was gonna attack he would have done it not hide when she turns round 🤣 little shit 🤣

Dog: “damn it! I still have that piece of food stuck between my teeth!” -girl looks at him- “oh hey, what’s up friend?” -girl looks away “What was I… oh yeah! That damn piece of kibble! Omnomnom”
