I still mourn the death of Freddie Mercury, and all the great music that was lost with his death.

20

u/4fuchssake May 16 '26

he knew he had the virus for several years, but selfishly kept screwing people. fuck him, but maybe not literally.

2

u/East-Temporary5646 May 20 '26

When he got the virus it was still being described as "a mysterious cancer" ffs

-1

u/RealityPowerRanking May 16 '26

Was he on medicine afterwards? If that’s the case, he at least wasn’t spreading it

22

u/ZacksBestPuppy May 16 '26

That didn't exist back then

1

u/bdtechted May 17 '26

Also that boy who got it from a contaminated syringe needle.

And A lot of the world's HIV patients were being treated by our aid money which is now gone

17

u/rhymenslime May 16 '26

Yep, and that means it will spread more and become a worse problem for years to come.

13

u/D-Express May 16 '26

No one said it isn’t still killing. People not having meds in some countries doesn't change the fact it's no longer a death sentence.

The issue is access to medication. THAT'S the death sentence.

People die from curable diseases all the time due to Iack of access to medications. What’s your point?

2

u/psam6 May 17 '26

Diabetes kills people in America every day.

Such a weird thing to play semantics around

He didn’t die from the gunshot wound he died from bleeding type comment

u/Unusual-Fault-4091 May 16 '26

For decades now, and for the last few years it has even been completely curable. If you can afford it obviously. After all, there’s nothing worse than slowly dying of an illness for which there’s a good treatment, but you just happened to be born in the wrong place.

69

u/Erratic_-Prophet May 16 '26

It's not been curable, it's been treatable.

11

u/jourmungandr May 16 '26

We're up to ~15 people cured at this point. It requires a bone marrow transplant and is way more dangerous than just taking ART the rest of your life. It's doable though.

-30

u/Unusual-Fault-4091 May 16 '26

It is curable for a while now; there are a number of patients in whom the virus is no longer detectable. The first such case was in Berlin in 2007.

37

u/Jethred_Radulfr May 16 '26

No longer detectable does not mean cured. It remains dormant in the body and replicates if treatment stops. I think there is a cure possible with some kind of transplant? But it's rare and dangerous so they do not consider HIV cured.

17

u/RainStormLou May 16 '26

you are wildly misunderstanding or misrepresenting the facts. it's not even something you can just throw money at, and with the "virus is no longer detectable" line in there I think that you're mixing up things that you didn't properly understand across multiple treatment options.

Obscenely rich people with HIV/AIDS still have HIV/AIDS. there are technically ways that it can be cured, but it's not even accessible to supervillains right now lol. it's like less than 20 people in the entire world ever, and most of them didn't even get "cured" the same way and half of those were accidental hogwarts shit.

6

u/Erratic_-Prophet May 16 '26 edited May 16 '26

The point of the medication they have to take forever is that it makes it be at undetectable levels. If they stop taking medicine it becomes detectable again. That's not cured, that's treated. It is treated by taking medicine for the rest of their lives, they still have HIV.

2

u/AnalgesicDoc May 16 '26

That’s called remission. Not the same as being cured.

-1

u/bsensikimori May 16 '26

"if you can afford it"

You're from the USA I presume?

3

u/Kayman718 May 16 '26

I recall people complaining that not enough was being done to find a cure or treatment because it was perceived (wrongly in my opinion) as a disease impacting only gay men. I think it’s quite remarkable that a treatment was found as fast as it was. Diseases like Parkinson’s and MS have been around much longer and we haven’t had as much success with them.

It has been official for quite some time - many years now.

In current medical practice, antiretroviral medications are being used to keep the viral load at a very minimum, to the point that a PLHIV having sexual contact with an HIV-negative person will NOT result in an HIV infection. Same goes with preventing vertical transmission between a pregnant mother with HIV, and her unborn child.

Treatments exist, making HIV non-terminal. This is a miracle that allows PLHIV to live long, fulfilling lives without the fear of the HIV infection progressing to full-blown AIDS - provided the medications are taken properly

1

u/asteriskelipses May 16 '26

ART is close to being the holy grail of medicine. We all know that the cure for cancer actually is though

1

u/Jolly_Ad1631 May 16 '26

Unless your poor*

1

u/Bostonterrierpug May 16 '26

Chris Rock was right… “yeah sorry can’t come into work today. My aids is acting up. “

1

u/naprid May 16 '26

Is the condom industry safe?

1

u/Omfgnta May 17 '26

If you have the money

1

u/a_aniq May 17 '26

HIV is still a terminal disease if you are poor

1

u/xennial_key May 17 '26

Because I'm a cynic I assume everyone will get infected so they have to pay a life subscription fee for the meds that will keep them alive and it's all part of big pharma's ultimate plan

1

u/Lucky_Loves_Laugh May 20 '26

Goodbye HIV. Welcome Ebola!

1

u/nickk1988 May 31 '26

4

u/Haggis-in-wonderland May 16 '26

To be fair, you will learn a lot more from wikipedia than some paragraph or one liner on reddit.

-2

u/Nipslippie May 16 '26
