I'm more confused because I've seen my local firefighters and theres no way they can do this.

And that's no shade to them because I couldn't either

u/baddingo3 20d ago

thats not part of training, thats just a fun video theyre doing because being athletic is probably part of her lifestyle, as in enjoying training and working out on your own time.

Which is cool. I shared a building for a year with firefighters as a paramedic and was envious of them. They get paid more, have to go out much more rarely and sleep most of the time.

When I had night shift there was something going on hourly, while they could just earn money while sleeping. And if they were needed, it was usually to break open a door with the police while we were left to deal with whatever disgusting corpse or situation lies behind.

Edit: Just to make clear, this rant isn't against firefighters in particular but the unequal pay for similar vital professions.

u/Mister_Chef711 19d ago

As a firefighter family friend once told me, "I've seen 100 medics try to become firefighters. I've never seen a firefighter try to become a paramedic."

70

u/Throwfeetsaway 19d ago

It’s not uncommon for firefighters to also be paramedics. The fire department gets sent on med calls all the time. I’m sure it varies by location to a certain extent, though.

Source: Dad was a firefighter and paramedic, and even taught paramedic class.

19

u/Pressure_Own 19d ago

Some of the firefighters in our town are also paramedics.

4

u/Count_Taxula 19d ago

Same dad was also a firefighter and this was the case for him. They mostly ran interstate accident calls and acted as paramedics until the ambulance could arrive. Everyone at his station was certified as a paramedic (they got a pay increase for this as well). This was due to firefighters being the first ones on the scene in most cases for the area he operated again. Kind of neat to see that it varies from location to location.

3

u/Ok-Acanthaceae-6576 18d ago

In my city every truck that rolls out on a call has to have a medic. I assume every FD was the same

Ye the ultimative goal for people I met that treat the blue light jobs as their life (go to sleep with their walky-talky and wear it on some multifunctional belt all the time during days off, have profile pictures in uniform etc the full cliché) is becoming a firefighter.

My midwestern city and most (but not all) of the ones around me staff with exclusively Firefighter/Paramedics. They are both and do rotations for truck and ambulance crews to stay sharp.

There are a lot who become paramedics in hopes of getting on a fire department too.

I know a fella who's a private firefighter at a large chemical works. Pays very well, and he has even less to do.

22

u/ReddiWhippp 19d ago

That sounds like a calculation of risk. Great job, great pay, but if the shit DOES hit the fan, he could easily end up dead or disabled for life. Also true of other firefighters.

15

u/bremsspuren 19d ago

Yeah. A chemical plant is something else.

"Spray down that tank in the middle of the blaze to stop it exploding, but whatever you do, don't extinguish the flare on top of it preventing the highly-toxic gas from escaping into the atmosphere."

8

u/Fair-Cucu2mbe3r48524 19d ago

Ye I met people during my training that were aspiring firefighters and they all were fighting over the chance to work at those big, rich chemical industrial complexes. They got a gym, swimming hall and barely anything to do there (hopefully honestly) with even better pay and benefits than regular firefighters.

u/Gold_Training_5044 19d ago

That completely depends on the Department. Where i live, there are no separate EMS and Fire Departments, so we are doing both jobs. Full nights sleep is an extreme rarity.

17

u/Fair-Cucu2mbe3r48524 19d ago

Ah interesting. Here they are separate specialized jobs with different training years, exams etc

Same here. The whole dang rig goes on medical calls.

Edited to make the comment more fun: Folks call the fire department for lots of random stuff. For example, Dad went on a call where an old lady trapped a rat and wanted help removing it, and they were like, “Ma’am, we’re the fire department. You need an exterminator.” 😂

→ More replies (1)

9

u/OkDust5962 19d ago

Agree, it is so unfair. Medics have to do 2 years training and then they get paid like crap. I couldn't even believe it when I found out about that.

6

u/JBeauch 19d ago

Sure, as long as you throw in teachers, surgical techs, and hospital custodians. There is a ton of unequal pay for absolutely "vital professions".

6

u/canman7373 19d ago

It used to be the medics were at the firehouse as well. Then cities fired them all and payed private business to do them for worse pay and benefits.

Tacking this onto the top comment so it won't get buried in all the comments:

This is then 27-year-old Josefine Mattson who is a firefighter in Strömstad, Sweden back in 2024. Apparently, the station got challenged by Norwegian colleagues (Strömstad is near the Norwegian border) so they let her complete the task.

An interview of her (in Swedish) plus a shot showing her impressive muscles here: https://www.svt.se/nyheter/lokalt/vast/har-klarar-josefine-hangande-brandmansprovet-blivit-viral-pa-sociala-medier

Back in 1994, I was 6 foot 4, 265 pounds and I smoked a pack and a half a day. I never ever worked out, and I had never run a mile in my life. Even with all of that, I was still scoring top 5 on the physical tests when hundreds were applying.

The trick for me is that I had the strength to make the equipment I was wearing and the heavy shit we had to move feel trivial. One test had us climbing through a roofs rafters. I watched another big guy get stuck and got worried, but again, it felt trivial to me.

My point is that I was not what anybody would consider to be in peak physical shape... quite the opposite, but I was still finishing near the top during the exams to become a firefighter... and many of the actual firefighters did not look like they could currently pass the exam.

I listened to the guy in front of me bragging about how he was a shoo in because he did well on the written exam and had all of the extra credit from being a veteran to education. Then, he missed the max time by 10 seconds and had to be taken away in the ambulance because he could not catch his breath. I think his issue was the exact opposite as me. He was in cardio shape, but he was a small guy. So, the heavy shit got to him. I'll bet that this woman did not have his problem.

u/[deleted] 19d ago

3

u/Lou_C_Fer 19d ago

I'm definitely that guy, but it has to be some weird alchemical mix of my parents genes. No one on either side is built like me. My parents are 5'8" and I'm the only one in my extended family over 6 feet others than second cousins with tall dads. I could beat my dad in arm wrestling easily when I was 14. So, I didn't get the strength from them, either.

I used to always joke about the milkman when people asked about where I got my height, but thanks to ancestry, I have genetic proof that I belong to both of my parents. So, I had to stop telling the joke.

I'll take a fat guy that can lift someone out of the building over a guy that can run a 5min mile but can't lift a 100lb person. I'm sure it doesn't come up super often, but it'd be important when it does. I topped out at around a 180lb person when I was in shape, but I definitely wasn't able to move fast with them.

9

u/Xianio 19d ago

FYI - You don't care about the 5min mile because firefighters need to run a mile. You care about the 5min mile because firefighters need to be able to effectively breath under immensely challenging low-oxygen scenarios. The sprint just recreates those conditions.

A fat guy who can lift but can't regulate his breathing under strain won't be lifting anyone very far.

An acquaintance of mine that was an EMT was trying to be a firefighter and he'd tell us about all the crazy shit they had him doing. Running up and down flights of stairs and climbing ladders in full gear.. do you just have to pass that stuff once when you're like 22 and you're good forever after that?

lol no shade meant either I've seen some jacked older firefighters but I've seen plenty that are not in such great shape too.

8

u/HurricaneK8 19d ago edited 19d ago

Nope! They test you on the training every few years for recertification, or add more training to it, so you have to do it LOTS, all the way into your 40s and 50s! My paramedic dad who was kinda forced into being a firefighter when the departments merged just loooooved it! 😃 /s

(Also, don't underestimate the first responders. My dad was a big dude with a beer gut, but he essentially spent his 20s to his 50s deadlifting ~200 pound people onto a ~100 pound stretcher nearly every day. They might not look like bodybuilders but they got it where it counts.)

(edit: left off a word by accident :P)

5

u/tia2181 19d ago

Our locals still train.. our tallest buildings 4 floors i think. What else they supposed to do when no call outs? Purely fire and rescue, no EMS too. Obviously came in useful during forest fires a few years ago.

I've known both types. Athleticism is valued in the ranks, at least in my local department, and I've known three (all men) who would have no problem at all doing this and then snapping off any number of pullups.

Just like in the general public, some individuals have a commitment to excellent physical conditioning and others don't.

In France firefighters have exercices like this every day. They have this thing called "la planche" which is a traditional daily physical test; they are required to pull themselves up onto a suspended wooden board at 2.40m (7.87 ft) above ground. They aren't allowed to take service if they can't do the exercise.

Edit: This is in Sweden, not France. But I wouldn't be surprised that this kind of exercise is standard there as well!

13

u/Ilesa_ 19d ago

No, this is in Sweden, look at the registration plaque.

But it's true that french firefighters are among the best in the world and the planche exercice is part of why, I guess.

Still amazing when big things appear, first year I moved here, within 6 weeks teens set a 35 yr old daycare on fire. Sadly burned to ground with crews from 2 other local cities too.

Having served in the Army as a combat engineer, I can attests to a lot of drills that had nothing to do with any practical exercise (remember the inverted crawl), but it shows that she has enough upper body strength and grip to do something a lot of it guys can't do. Hat's off to her. Half of the point of some of these drills is to prove that you can put up with a lot of BS and still hack through a course. She did just fine and deserves respect.

While true, i think that undersells how impressive this is. Very few adults  can hang one-handed from a bar for more than a few seconds.  Very few can hang with two hands for even 1 minute.

A lot of us think this is easy because we haven't tried it since we were little kids.

Back when I was qualified for rescue training we would do races to get into full gear from street clothes. The methods we used would never, ever be used for an actual rescue, like somersaulting off a table into the gear.

The guys who did these races were able to properly gear up about 15 seconds faster than the rest of the guys could, even though we all did regular practice as well. Knowing what parts of the gear snag on your body in a rush, how much leeway the fasteners you couldn't properly reach had, etc. There are so many little things that don't come up in regular practice that become obvious in stress tests.

Maybe she finds a one handed technique for her jacket that saves 2 seconds, or maybe it's just more fun than doing chin ups for a work out.

18

u/Charming-Border7429 20d ago edited 20d ago

Yep, former Army Ranger; we had a lot of downtime. When we got bored, we would come up with all sorts of stupid games and contests that were related to strength, fitness, and combat skills. It was invaluable for developing skills and confidence in new guys.

Tell a squad we have to do 15 iterations of cardiac hill for afternoon PT. They are going to bitch and moan.

Get them to play a game that involves buddy-carrying each other up and down three flights of stairs, with everyone wearing RBA (with both plates), and they are going to be exhausted with some awesome stories.

I always thought of it like a jam session for musicians or professional athletes playing a no-rules pickup game with friends.

7

u/erroneousbosh 19d ago

So a bit like when I say to my six-year-old "I bet you can't finish your breakfast before I get the bikes out of the shed", kind of thing? :-D

6

u/Charming-Border7429 19d ago

Yep, and back to this video. There is no reason in the world why someone would need to put on their turnout gear while hanging from a ladder....

But the pirmary skill for a new firefighter is hose and nozzle management. They are lugging around hoses that can weigh hundreds of pounds when charged. The nozzle reactation can also be hundreds of pounds. They control these hoses with their hands.

Grip and forearm strength and stamina (and skill) are the difference between getting those hoses and water where they need to be or standing around helplessly while people who are depending on you are wondering where their water is.

It's probably more a matter of having them build dynamic core strength and grip strength. Just hanging on is one thing, but hanging on while moving around and doing a coordinated task is another. It's probably also about having them do full-body strenuous activity while in their gear.

17

u/Septaceratops 20d ago

That's like asking why people in the military do pushups since people don't just do pushups in combat. Training and testing don't have to have a direct correlation to something performed in the line of duty to have value.

5

u/VP007clips 20d ago

They are good skills, but your average person, even your average firefighter, wouldn't be able to even try doing this. It's too high level to be anything more than showing off and messing around.

I doubt even the guys on underground firefighters team at my work site could do it, and their team is usually the highest rated rescue team in the world in competitions and rankings.

Can be, but it's not.

3

u/TKtommmy 19d ago

This is not training because there is no situation in which she is going to be gearing up while hanging from a ladder. Jesus fuck.

Yeah, I was gonna go with "This isn't training, this is either hazing or a bet."

u/Ruckus2026 20d ago

Can't you envision the need for grip strength, balance, coordination?

4

u/Squidkidz 20d ago

None most likely, but it’s a fun workout to improve overall strength and dexterity, and become better at manipulating your gear confidently in difficult situations

5

u/craignumPI 20d ago

That's not the point...it's showing the ability to go above and beyond. Like you going from your desk to the restroom.

4

u/biohazard951753 20d ago

It’s not. It’s not fire training at all and no house would ever have anyone do this. It’s for internet clout.

Still impressive as fuck tho.

Edit: My brain smoothed out for a bit and I misread the title several times. Anyway, the clip is from Sweden, if you're interested.

27

u/Alpha1Niner 20d ago

The Swedish license plate and the Swedish looking woman lend credibility to this theory

16

u/Loko8765 20d ago

Also, well, the fact that everyone is talking Swedish including the people in background noise.

They’re all speaking Swedish flawlessly so my assumption is that yes, they are all Swedish.

Question was about OP, video is obviously Swedish...

My mind is blown that every comment thinks this is actual training and not just goofing around

16

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 20d ago

My mind however is decidedly not blown knowing what comments people were going to make and how few of them are just admitting how impressive this is

3

u/Ferret-mom 20d ago

They do train to put their gear on. But the requirement is that you can get it all on in under 2 minutes… with both feet on the ground.

it says training in the caption

I feel like they're just calling out the inaccurate title that says it is training

One year I dressed as a firefighter for Halloween at a bar event and a woman came up to me and said she was a firefighter and wanted a photo to send to her crew. At a later date I thought maybe she was interested in me and I should have chatted her up a bit.

u/chikhan 20d ago

Good job fumbledore!

5

u/Kor_Phaeron_ 20d ago

Ah, don't worry. We men are idiots. I didn't get the signals my now wife send me. I first met her at university and it took 6 weeks of me being unable to read social cues. What saved me: One day she walked to my table in a cafe and said "We go out today, pick me up at 6pm". I was dumbfounded, because until this very moment it hadn't even occurred to me once that she was flirting with me for weeks.

There isn’t a stopwatch precise enough to clock how fast I would have fallen down trying this.

To be fair, I can't put one leg in any of my clothes without falling sideways.

Lame title. Her being a woman has nothing to do with how impressive this feat is.

Some of those hanging tasks werent done correctly. Some people locked elbows through the bars while others did a full vertical hang. Had they specifically did a full vertical hang for everyone more women would have held on longer. Still a very cool show though

3

u/steddy24 20d ago

The show has many issues where the challenges were not thought through logically. But check out the first challenge in the new Italy physical 100 for the planking. I probably am done with the show as it’s too repetitive now lol

It does lol, I do calisthenics and I will meet multiple men in the gym on any day that can do 20+ pull ups or 10+ muscle ups. But I meet very few girls that can get even close to that level. That is not a coincidence.

3

u/DarkBlue222 19d ago

I know a few male firefighters. None of them could do this.

3

u/VegetableCommand9427 19d ago

Fuck yeah, woman!

6

u/BackwoodButch 20d ago

Always gotta some fucking man shitting on a woman doing literally anything. Calling her grip strength “okay” when she’s not only holding her own body weight for an extended period of time single-handed for most of it before switching to the other hand but then also adding on the base layer of gear, manoeuvring it around and still holding to the bar, and then attempting two chin ups with added weight (which based on a cursory search suggests the jacket, pants, and boots are about 30-35lbs).

Yeah, sure, her grip strength is just “okay” 🙄

14

u/BigEasy1981 20d ago

Not sure what they’re training her for?!?

50

u/edjumication 20d ago

Its obviously not part of any official training. Its just an impressive skill video for views.
