SOCIETY A member of a gang nicknamed "Hellboy" was arrested in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte, along with his revolver, which fires 12-gauge cartridges.

The pressure developed pushing the follower/slug down a smooth pipe is very low compared to a rifle.
However! What happens if the cylinder is slightly misaligned and the projectile gets stuck?
Best case, the brass ruptures and hot gas and brass flies everywhere, including past the hammer and into your face. Worst case is worse.

u/sithelephant 19d ago
Well, first off, the cylinder must remain unharmed, so jot that down.

Thickness dosnt always mean strength... material properties of metals vary a LOT. This is even worst if you heat the metal (during welding) or if the metal is corroded. Shooting this this could me safe maybe... or it could explode in your face, either way I doubt anyone has done the math to check
5
u/Slow_Variation_6969 19d ago edited 19d ago
Shot guns use thinner barrels than standard center-fire firearms due to much lower pressures (5K-8k PSI) compared to say a 9mm cartridge (35k PSI)

u/Gryphontech 19d ago
Right, what I'm saying is if you use shit steel and do a bad job with the welds even something that looks thick can be a lot weaker then you expect it to be.
6
u/prong_daddy 19d ago
I'm thinking that metallurgy isn't the safety problem. This piece of crap looks like it was braized together. Brass is orders of magnitude weaker than a steel weld.

Years ago I was shooting with one of my buddies and he had an ar style 22 that periodically would just chamber incorrectly and explode but it was such a small caliper that you honestly could hardly hear a difference from it firing normally. Trusting this contraption is absolutely wild.
21
u/MemoryMedical3967 19d ago
A semi auto is definitely different then a revolver.
Cylinder alignment isn't as important when you shoot buckshot.
Plus there's no feeding mechanism that can fail like the ar
27
u/Less-Damage-1202 19d ago
I wanna know if the cylinder actually spins like it should 🤔
Imagine this thing chain firing!😬
19
u/Significant-Kick-479 19d ago
It looks like the cylinder manually spins and is set on the rod that you see in the front. The cylinder is held in position by the screw on the bottom that goes into little divots on each chamber
3
u/AnAncientBog 19d ago
If you look close you can see a little dimple in the ends of the cylinders and a little screw in front of the trigger guard. Its pretty clear that you have to looses the screw, hand rotate the cylinder and then lock it in place with the screw.

12 gauge has less recoil than many expect, especially with birdshots, this guy probably was able and used it.
also we see a underbarrel handle in one of the pics, which would make this more like a sewn off rifle, as he probably didn't wield it like a pistol.

It’s honestly kind of interesting. I used to work in a fab shop and those guys would eat through grinders. There were just random ass handles for them everywhere. I have no doubt whoever had the capability to weld that on and had the die to thread it, also had a plethora of unused grinder handles at their disposal.
73
14
u/gypsybullldog 19d ago
Oh definitely lol I’m an industrial painter at a paint/sand blast shop and those handles are everywhere
12
u/OilheadRider 19d ago
Lol, and brand new unused handles, too. They get in the way and, I have way better control if I hold the head of the grinder.
2
u/Aggressive_Day2839 19d ago
I actually made a mickey mouse sculpture out of old grinder guards and the tools for removing the arbor. Noone wants to throw something useful away so a certain box on a shelf stored every guard and tool never used.

u/trainedstork 19d ago
I wonder how the action works.
It looks like to cycle the chambers he must have wound it using the crank on the front by the muzzle that connects through to the drum. I hope it has indexing, otherwise having to line it up manually would be terrible. Other than that it looks strong enough to hold together, those are some thick steel pipes
18
u/Meme-Botto9001 19d ago
I think it’s just to get out and reload the drum.
21
u/trainedstork 19d ago edited 19d ago
The reason I thought it might be used to cycle the gun is a. the cylinder/drum really doesn't look like it swings out and b. I see the little handle in two positions (both 9 and 3 oclock) in the image series so it rotates.
On a regular revolver, that's where the ejector rod could be, but it can't be used to get the cylinder out here as it's entirely internal to the underlug which is fixed to the barrel.
That said, cycling the action might be done with a press of that handle beneath the cylinder/barrel? It might connect to a pawl that cycles the gun. Either way i don't see this thing having an internal action, whether that be single or double action.
→ More replies (3)17
8
u/Any-Square-7771 19d ago
It looks to me like it has indexing, if you look at the cylinder closely you can see "little" dents to the rear on each chamber, and to my eye they seem to be intentional bc they're pretty uniform
6
u/steventempered 19d ago
I think they correspond with the lock pin screw underneath the drum.
Know nothing about firearms, but I am a fabricator and that looks sketchy as fuck to me.
→ More replies (1)3
u/trainedstork 19d ago
Yeah, another commenter mentioned those, and the little bolt/nut on the trigger guard. I'm inclined to side with his explanation that the cylinder can be spun by hand to cycle the gun, but that bolt is tightened into the dimple to index the cylinder. Still have no idea about that little handle in front, unless it's somehow used for disassembly.
3
u/Ur_fav_Cryptek 19d ago
The handle in the front is so you don’t break your wrist while firing the thing, it’s a forward grip
→ More replies (2)4
u/2bit_solutionz 19d ago
It looks like the cylinders has dimples towards the hammer, and in front of the trigger guard it looks like a wingnut that could be a screw/spring tensioner. So maybe the cylinder it rotated by hand but doesn't spin freely?

Once i went to my mother's hometown in the country of a northern state.
They had 12 police officers for a city of 10.000 people, and they all sported heavy irons whenever they where seen around XD.
It could have been the most mundane ocurence, whenever they were called, they brought at least a shotgun with them.
And if i recal, i have never seen them firing even once, so it was just for aura farming.

He has a variety of firearms in the comic, most notably a single-shot, top-break pistol with some history but it's not named or anything. But he's also carried a standard issue duty revolver and sometimes he's pictured with a semi-auto handgun resembling an M1911.
Which I think is curious given how much comics love to give characters bespoke, signature weapons and how unique Hellboy is as a character. Like he's a guy who should have a distinctive hand cannon and it's a thing the movies did really well.

34
u/Agent_of_evil_13 19d ago
Looking at that thing, it wouldn't surprise me if it's actually heavier than my full size 12 gauge. That is some thick steel, so the recoil is probably manageable.
Firing that would probably get a lot of hot gas in your face though. I doubt there is a good seal between the cylinder and the barrel, so a lot of gas would shoot out the sides.

I've shot some pretty gnarly revolvers and handguns before. 45 mag, 454 casul, desert eagle. If you're shooting slugs or 00buck out of that thing, I imagine the recoil to be pretty gnarly....
Put it this way, if 2 of his henchmen are standing on either side of the gun when it's fired, they'd probably be deaf and concussed at best.
10
u/mrtobesmcgobes 19d ago
The cylinders aren’t sealed like a shotgun chamber too, so I’d imagine this is igniting gasses way too close to your hand. This would be a gun to shoot from a vice with a string on the trigger from a safe distance

I used to own a Super Redhawk in 480. It shot a 400gr slug around 1200fps. 400gr is about an ounce, so equivalent ballistics to a standard loaded 12ga shell without a shock absorbing wad. It wasn't pleasant but it wasn't close to breaking my wrist. I figure a 460 or 500 S&W would be even more violent without the brake.
