SOCIETY When Steve Jobs refused to give "early garage employees" at Apple stock options, Steve Wozniak gave them a combined $10m worth of his own stock because it was "the right thing to do". In addition, Wozniak gave $4m worth of stock to his parents, sister, & brother and $2m worth of stock to his friends

Apple employee No. 12, Daniel Kottke, was one of those early garage employees that Jobs had refused to give stock options to despite becoming friends with Kottke in college and even travelling to India with him. Kottke...
...had been Jobs's soul mate in college, in India, at the All One Farm, and in the rental house they shared during the Chrisann Brennan crisis. He joined Apple when it was headquartered in Jobs's garage, and he still worked there as an hourly employee. But he was not at a high enough level to be cut in on the stock options that were awarded before the IPO. "I totally trusted him, so I didn't push," said Kottke. The official reason he wasn't given stock options was that he was an hourly technician, not a salaried engineer, which was the cutoff level for options. Even so, he could have justifiably been given "founder's stock," but Jobs decided not to. "Steve is the opposite of loyal," according to Andy Hertzfeld, an early Apple engineer who has neverless remained friends with him. "He's anti-loyal. He has to abandon the people he is close to."
Kottke decided to press his case with Jobs by hovering outside his office and catching him to make a plea. But at each encounter, Jobs brushed him off. "What was really difficult for me is that Steve never told me I wasn't eligible," recelled Kottke. "He owed me that as a friend. When I would ask him about stock, he would tell me I had to talk to my manager." Finally, almost six months after the IPO, Kottke worked up the courage to march into Jobs's office and try to has out the issue. But when he got in to see him, Jobs was so cold that Kottke froze. "I got choked up and began to cry and just couldn't talk to him," Kottke recalled. "Our friendship was all gone. It was so sad."
(Apple employee No. 5) Rod Holt, the engineer who had built the power supply, was getting a lot of options, and tried to turn Jobs around. "We have to do something for your buddy Daniel," he said, and he suggested they each give him some of their own options. "Whatever you give him, I will match it," said Holt. Replied Jobs, "Okay. I will give him zero."

I worked at Apple while Steve was alive and after his death. At parties people would always ask the question "Steve or Woz" and to me the answer was always Woz, assuming the question wasn't who's the biggest asshole?
People always thought that Steve was some legendary figure, some god amongst men. Did he see things that others didn't? Sure, but I never thought that he should be regaled as some amazing figure.

Dude was a huge dick doesn't mean he didn't know what he was doing when it came to tech. You can accidentally fall into success in an emerging markets sure, but not 3 times! (Apple, Pixar and NEXT) And before anyone says NEXT was a failure, that company and its products are what allowed Jobs to return to Apple in the first place and the core of that OS is the foundation for MacOS, iOS, WatchOS etc. Dozens of companies tried to put their own spin on UNIX to sell to the consumer market. NextStep/MacOSX is the only one that ever succeeded. He was a monumental asshole in both his work and personal life. He shouldn't be worshiped but he shouldn't be dismissed by the people who claim 'he didn't invent anything himself' either.

Have to disagree with you there, The Sorkin/Boyle Steve Jobs movie really presents him as a bit of a dictator to his employees, whilst mainly focusing on his relationship to his ex-partner and daughter, whom at the beginning of the movie he doesn’t even claim as his own.
He goes on a bit of a journey and by the end is a “better guy”, and this bit may not be accurate necessarily but does provide a pay off, especially in the main focus of the story, which is, again, his relationship to his daughter.

He did get various grants of options during his tenure as CEO, sometimes the options expired without him exercising them but he probably ended up with 100s of millions in Apple shares as compensation in his role as CEO, but he became the largest individual shareholder of Disney after they purchased Pixar and that was the majority of his wealth.

He got just over $100m, he used it to fund NeXT ($10-12m) and buy and fund Pixar ($50-60). Pixar became his Disney shares.
The shares he had at his death would be worth around $15bn for Disney and $52bn for Apple today.

u/kjg182 19d ago
Yeah he still made like 100-130 million and used about 10 million to buy the computer graphics division of lucasfilm and then rebranded it to Pixar. His net worth at death was around 10 billion. If he never sold and apple still did what it did his net worth would have been 450 billion at death. 100 million is no chump change and he did very well with it but 10 billion vs 450 billion is quite the difference. Now obviously if he never got kicked out things probably would have not gone the way it did plus jobs was brilliant but was pretty terrible at hardware design all the major projects he was head of were pretty much failures until he came back.

Jobs sold all of his Apple stock when they fired him in 1985. That's likely the biggest financial mistake in human history.
He left his wife and kids about $9B, and it was mostly Disney stock from the acquisition of Pixar.

Musk is planning on spending his money on mars

u/Unusual_Sherbert_809 19d ago
Musk is planning on spending his money on making even more money. Period. Usually by conning people, he's been promising stuff that he never delivers on for nearly two decades now. The fact that anyone still believes him, and what's even more surprising, keeps throwing money at him, is the very definition of insanity.
All that is to say, if anyone still thinks Elon is ever getting on a ship to Mars, they're delusional.

The sooner we let Musk have his libertarian mars colony (and the sooner it devolves into a hellhole), the sooner we get to visit Rapture: The Amusement Park.

He's probably the most powerful person (in the private sector) of the past half a century whose legacy was completely saved by his death.
You literally don't hear any criticism of him outside of places like Reddit.

u/s_k_i_o 19d ago
The internet is flooded with criticism of Jobs. What are you talking about? 🤷🏻♂️ As someone here put it, he was basically an S-tier bastard. Should we praise Stalin too, then? Why not? He was a tyrant who didn’t give a shit about people either with a huge legacy

Stalin
Unironically for both people there are still huge communities filled with people who idolize him. Tho I agree, that most people who know anything about Jobs past him being head of Apple a while ago know, that he was not a nice guy.

He died at a really fortunate time in our culture. 2011 was juuuust as many were starting to question the billionaire class' necessity in the world in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis and before the internet became highly corporatized. He's remembered as an innovator instead of a greedy asshole because of the quality that Apple provided back then, but if he were still here today we'd probably throw him on the hot coals with Bezos, Musk, and Zuckerberg.

We need more people like Woz. He was literally the rising tide that raised all ships, and he's still incredibly wealthy, and in the process improved the lives of those who helped generate that wealth.

The interesting thing is for Apple to be the Apple we know right now we needed both Woz and Jobs.
Without Jobs the initial Apple would have been just something Woz gave away and never developed into what it is, without Woz there would have been no early groundbreaking electronics design.
The amount of good guy in Woz balanced out the asshole in Jobs that they made something work.

Woz also funded the San Jose Children’s museum. He became a humble teacher in Los Gatos or Saratoga I think. More Woz’s. Fewer Jobs, Thiels, Ellisons.

u/ThePersianPrince 19d ago
He also donated a bunch of computers to all the schools in Los Gatos. He’s a super nice guy I used to go walk with him when I saw him at the park and he’d never brush me off. He was the first person who wasn’t family to congratulate me when I got a job in tech. Fun fact I offered him a bong rip one time and he politely declined.

He’s a mensch. Someone who is recognizable but doesn’t act like a diva.
If he wants an iPhone he’ll line up like everyone else.
If he wants to meet a celeb you know they will accommodate him. He’s humble but has game

Steve Wozniak also organized the US festival in 1982 because he loved music and wanted to put a festival full of great, top level bands. He also spared no expense when it came to safety and security and wanted prices to still be affordable. And he lost somewhere around $10 million dollars of his own money. So the next year he did it, but made it even bigger and lost even more if his own money.
Sadly I can imagine any of the ultra rich tech guys doing something like that today.

Good people don't become billionaires. A good person would do their damndest to give as much away as they could to do as much good as they could.
The amount of just dark art sith shit one has to be steeped in to even thrive in our system, can't imagine what kind of darkness is in a billionaire's heart :(

Woz is just so awesome. And he's still hacking! On "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" one of the hosts asked him how many iPhones he had on him at that moment, and he said "five". XD
He truly is the Emperor of the Nerds.

The iPod and iPhone where great. Apple hasn't innovated in a long time.
It's just a marketing machine now
