Amazing A mother cat shows her kittens that their dog friend isn't dangerous and helps the little ones make friends with him.

For Golden Retreivers there are two type of other beings: Friends, and future friends.

u/Whole_Mongoose1854 3d ago
In my experience golden retrievers get very perplexed when something doesn’t want to be their friend.

u/puterTDI 3d ago
we have a 16 week old golden puppy. The cat hates her and she cannot understand this.
Which is sad because the cat loved our previous golden...likely because she was elderly and calm.

I have the opposite scenario. My cat and last golden got along great. The cat would even bath him and sit with him. They were good pals.
My current golden isn’t a fan. He likes to be left alone when sleeping and stuff and the cat always tries to bath him. He growls at the cat a lot warning him to back off.
I think my senior cat still misses his old friend.

That’s absolutely reactive behavior that you should gently but firmly correct any time it happens in your presence. I get respecting boundaries, but if you make it clear that your elderly lady feline is to be treated with respect (basically, make a big show about being on the cat’s side when she’s trying to groom, etc.
In my experience, stay consistent with it a couple 2-3 weeks and the energy should be sliding from ‘vaguely hostile’ to “annoyed acceptance”, and before you know it, badda bing badda boom they’re thick as thieves, and from time to time colluding like them as well 😏👉🏻👉🏻

u/mrronesy666 1d ago
Never punish growling. That is the dogs communication. If you take their voice away it can lead to a dog going right to biting.
7
u/Top-Main4830 2d ago
The older cat is probably thinking: 'I approved a distinguished golden gentleman, not a 16-week-old furry wrecking ball.'
2
u/puterTDI 2d ago edited 2d ago
It's funny because the cat sits there beating her on the face and she just desperately wants to be friends with it whimpering and sliding towards it. The breeder apparently had a mancoon that loves dogs and would jump in the play area with the puppies and play with them
28
u/hitztasyj 3d ago
I had a golden retriever and he loved everybody and everything…except the cat that desperately wanted to be friends with him. He would love on the other cats we had, but this specific cat would try so badly to snuggle with him/rub up on him, and my dog would just turn his head or get up and leave.
And then after that dog passed away, I got a pit/lab mix who was totally down to be friends with that cat, and then the cat was uninterested.

They're as friendly as can be; I've only seen a Golden Retriever get angry once, when it was protecting its owner from a stray dog. Other than that, they're always sweet.
84
u/saltywastelandcoffee 3d ago
Actually from my experience there's a third distinct category. Which is squirrels.
27
u/onbiver9871 3d ago
Squirrels are decidedly a subcategory of “future friends” for our golden haha :)

5
u/Consistent-Bear-5158 3d ago
From my experience, it’s squirrels, birds, rabbits, and mice lol
4
u/DarkwingDuckHunt 3d ago
my golden is currently convinced there's a mouse living under the deck stairs, and he's probably right, but it's still funny watching him to try to smell out the mouse everytime he goes out.

u/Kooky_Aioli565 3d ago
My golden/lab is the same way! A gentle, social butterfly through and through. She is absolutely perfect ❤️
10
u/fightmydemonswithme 3d ago
I have a lab. I wish he were gentle, but he is very loving.
5
u/Rickjm 3d ago
We have a lab who loves basically everyone
Had to train him to grab a toy when new people come in the house because he literally can’t contain himself. Grabbing the toy somehow stopped him jumping?
I wish he were gentle, but he is very loving 🤪
4
u/totallyfinerasputin 2d ago
hey, how'd you train him like that? My golden litr yanks something from the guest's hands (bag or accessories etc) until he gets them and then goes and jumps on the sofa and keeps spinning for a while. It's cute but really aggressive 😭

Golden Retrievers don't believe in rejection. To them, a cat's angry hiss is just 'cat language for nice to meet you'.

“Why befriend he who hogs the bed?!”
“Little ones: he does not hog the bed…he is the bed.”
280
u/WelpImTrapped 3d ago
Golden Retrievers just want to actively befriend everything and anything.

u/Apprehensive_One2384 3d ago
If you live somewhat rural they'll bring you baby animals and cats and try to parent them. Always fun and stressful.
43
u/PorkRollEggAndWheeze 3d ago
My childhood labradoodle brought us a hutch of baby bunnies once. Mom didn’t reappear so we brought them to a wildlife sanctuary, but my dog was SO ready to be an interspecies mother of 3

Istg my dog only caught the damn prairie dogs so I’d run after him yelling about leaving the damn prairie dogs alone. WE DON‘T NEED TO DO THIS WHY CAN‘T WE JUST PLAY CATCH 🙄😆

My goose loves the chicks every year. She always climbs inside the broader box to be with them and she doesn’t understand why they run away.
She couldn’t care less about people. She’s got one person and that’s good enough for her.

Mama cat - laying down facing away from the dog with her eyes closed... that's cat language for "I trust you with my life".

u/KeepAnEyeOnYourB12 3d ago
If kittens knew how cute they are when they get all fierce like that, it would really piss them off.

u/PowerSkunk92 3d ago
Put a child, a puppy and a kitten in a scary situation. The child will cry for help. The puppy will lie down and surrender. The kitten will prepare for battle.

I once took over a dog from friends. It was trained to go after cats and ducks. It went completely nuts when she saw a duck or cat.
Then at one day a stray little kitten ended up 10 floors high at me door step. At first I didn't take her in, but the second day I had no choice in my mind, it was a stray.
But the dog! Yes I litterally had to hold her tight to me, and constantly show her a other way of behaving to it. I had to sleep with them for a about 2 days in a row to make them learn! As we r the caretaker/master. We must learn them, or they learn them self, and that's where you get these weird videos from where people laugh at the behavior of an animal in how to coop. After 2 days it swapped over. She knew it was off limits to attack the cat.
The dog started to change from a jumping ADHD dog to a very relaxed loving kuddly dog. Total 180 in how the dog behaved.
After that they were unseperatable. where 1 was , there was the other. sleeping together and playing together. Cause I learned my cat 2 ways of playing. bare hands no claws, and when I put on wintergloves or the ovenglove she knew she could go all in, all wild.

u/Suspicious-Shock-934 3d ago
Love the big doggie smile in the cuddle pile.

u/jenni451 3d ago
That dog is 100% awake and laying in heaven, trying not to move and interrupt paradise.

Everyone knows, if the cat sits in your lap, you are stuck there until He decides your time together has ended. ☺️

I'll admit I don't have a dog, but that dog's heart seems to be going like the clappers...that doesn't seem right, given that it's just lying down...
Edit: Ok, my mistake...we had a bunch of dogs when I was a kid, I know dogs. It's heart rate is approx. 120 bpm, based on extrapolating from a 10 seconds count from 0:26 - 0:36. For a dog that's lying down, that's going some.
34
u/lebrilla 3d ago
It may have just been running around and laid down. It's normal for them to pant for a little while after.
24
19
u/EclecticSyrup 3d ago
When I saw the panting I thought: oh no, now he's too warm with all the kitty body heat. They pant when they're warm to let out heat because they can't sweat like us humans to mediate.

Dogs breathe hard when they're excited. My interpretation was that the dog us just pretending to be relaxed
7
u/SeaBee9905 2d ago
His inner monologue is, "Just act chill, no big deal, you're cool, just relax", while his body betrays him and he is panting.

You mean animals that have been genetically engineered by said humans? Canines in the wild don’t act like this. Look up how African Wild Dogs hunt. These sort of comments are such an eye roll.

2
u/Harry_Saturn 2d ago
People also are supposed to be more sophisticated and have a higher potential for mental elasticity. Even if we aren’t “genetically engineered”, couldn’t we just use logic and reason that we should act like this?

I hate this type of stuff. The animals always look drugged up in the end and "staged". "Ah, look how cute they are now! Best of friends!" When in reality they are all doped up.

They may not be a year old but were ready to throw paws. I’m sure they could injure even adult humans with their teeth and claws. Can’t imagine what lions and tigers could do at such close quarters.

When I saw him panting, I was like oh no, he's getting too hot with all that kitty body heat 😭 They pant to release heat when they're warm since they can't sweat like us humans do to regulat their body temperature.

I love when dogs sniff random things as a way to seem they don't care about something. Their nose is so powerful so to them it's probably the same as when we look in a different direction of something we're trying convince we're ignoring
