8th grade kickball game. Got ahold of one that had some good distance but hooked it foul...right into one of the basketball hoops for a swish. Everyone goes crazy and agrees it's a home run. Been chasing that high ever since.

Oh wow I know where this classroom is. It’s McPhersons Lab room 100 at Ohio State. I had multiple classes here when I was in college.

This happened at Ohio State University in 2016. Organic chemistry professor challenged the class: if someone could throw a paper ball from the upper balcony into the trash can, everyone would get 100% on their first quiz.

💯 this guy lived the high of this all year round. Might have even got a number or two from the ladies. I'd have given him my number and I'm a male.

u/Miserable_Agent2278 21h ago
Guaranteed highest score of that semester class wide. For some it was probably the only passing test score
8
u/WHRocks 21h ago
That's legit. Definitely a "weed-out" class. I'm old, so I'm not sure if they still call hard prerequisites that lol.
14
u/FoolOnDaHill365 19h ago
I remember asking my professor why organic chemistry was so hard and seemingly intentionally hard and he said the weed-out thing. There was this brilliant classmate who would finish an impossible test that everyone else did not come close to finishing. People would be on question 60 after 1.5 hours and she would do the full 100 in 1 hour and get a perfect score. I asked her and she showed me her score. Looking back I do think those weed out classes are important. It’s amazing how smart some people are when given the opportunity to show it. It’s important for them to be given their chance to be a scientist or doctor or some other high professional. I wish I could be around people that smart on a regular basis (that sure isn’t happening on Reddit).

I was thinking if teachers really wanted to teach about working together, they'd pull shit like this all the time cause this is instant "we're in this together" material
12
u/General_Guest7846 21h ago
I like this clip because education shouldn't all be about books and studying. If people didn't dread going to class the world might be a slightly better place. Classes should have fun teachers and moments like this.

How does this work administrately or judicialy? Genuine question. Can/will it be contested by the faculty or school? Is it compensated on another end of the course? Is it only valid at the start when the stakes are lower?

Yeah, but you take the test to know what you're missing so you don't make real-world mistakes.
Every single person who cheered just wanted society to think they're qualified.

one basketball player, yes. and all basketball players together make 6 billion in a year. But teachers together rake in over 400 billion each year. how about that ?

A lot more teachers than basketball players
1

yes. a lot harder to become good enough to become a paid basketball player, so they are paid a lot higher. supply and demand. you know.

u/Int6Iknowwhatimdoing 6h ago
I teach. HS, not college so take it with a grain of salt. I do this intentionally all the time. Strong culture in your class is almost as important as strong content knowledge. The class feeling like they can win against you is one of the strongest culture builders there is. I would NEVER do it with a real assessment I know the group needs. But I have done almost exactly this with a short timed write at the end of class saying I'll swap it for a game. Usually I let a kid try a few tines because I want them to make it so I don't have to grade anything.

Not to be Debbie Downer, but I’ve never understood the whole “do this weird trick shot and you can skip the test!” thing. I thought the point of tests was to determine student proficiency in a subject (ALL of the students). Is this a class whose practical applications are so useless that skipping a test is a kind of funny joke?
Because all I see happening is this: there are people who should’ve failed the test, but who will pass with good grades anyway, and then you wonder why some new hires at a job don’t seem to understand fundamental concepts. One missed test isn’t so crazy if it’s high school, where you’ll be taking at least 5-10 tests for one class and one dip in understanding has little overall effect. But these appear to be adult students….
I just don’t get it. Yes, the shot was super hard, and it was very impressive and all. But games are not the point of education.
3
u/Foreskin_Paladin 3h ago
I had a class in college where something similar to this happened. We had like 17 tests that semester, and we got to skip one. That doesn't mean we got free As, we just simply didn't do a test. Our grades were still determined by an average of the other 16 tests.
It changed nothing from a grade perspective, a failing student was still failing and a passing student was still passing. But it did put everyone in a great mood for a whole week, built rapport with the professor, and gave everyone extra time to study for the next one.
3
u/phase_ten 3h ago
Oh but you very much are a Debbie Downer.
It’s one test, it’ll probably be postponed or the subject will be handled in the next one in one way or another. But even if they skip the whole subject, it’s worth it. This is an experience they won’t forget, especially the thrower. Trust me, that’s worth more than a test.
Everyone is in on it, everyone is in agreement, it’s just all around good fun.2

u/SweetHomeNorthKorea 21h ago
It’s impossible to know without the conditions of the bet. Could be that everyone gets 100%. Could be that if your midterm score was good then you can carry that grade over to your final. Maybe the throw only makes the test optional so if you did bad on the midterms then you can bring your average up. Lots of possibilities.
-11
u/kingkingkang 21h ago
In China they would probably send their best student to take the test and if he gets a perfect score, everyone is spared from the test.
Not this dumb game.
