Just Wow We can go about 7 days in isolation & hold out breath for only 20ish minutes...the limits of our bodies are very robust!

Absolute Human Medical Record: ~600 BPM
Outside of athletic performance, the fastest human heart rate documented in medical literature occurred in a hospitalized male patient who experienced an extreme, brief episode of ventricular tachyarrhythmia/flutter peaking at 600 bpm for roughly 20 seconds before spontaneously dropping and stabilizing.I had to read up on this and yes that is nowhere near the limit

I worked in pathology for years so admittedly I was only really on wards to sort out POCT analysers, but some machines get LOUD when a patient has tachycardia. I was in EAU I think and I remember noting the monitor hooked up to a male patient nearby (which was going bonkers every other minute, super irritating) showed his heart rate was apparently jumping to ~235bpm. The machine was not defective.

Complete isolation 7 days?
What does that mean exactly?
Because I could straight up stay at home not leave the house for a week and have zero problem with that. Lol

Complete isolation . 0 stimulus
122
u/RedKnightXIV 11h ago
AHH that makes more sense. And its a little scary to contemplate.
66
u/Mediocre_Age_9988 10h ago
The no stimulation makes more sense. There is a silent room where all stimuli is removed completely. A lot of people get overwhelmed by the sensation of their heart beating and get out.
3
u/DaddyBigBeard 2h ago
I actually have panic attacks when trying to sleep some nights because my heart will beat extra hard when I lie down after awhile. Its very uncomfortable and makes my mind think something is wrong. Then, it will stop beating so hard, which my brain perceives as not beating at all. Que panic attack. Yes, I am on meds for panic disorder.

Wait, what's overwhelming about feeling or hearing your heartbeat? I can do that almost all the time
3
u/thepirate84 3h ago
As someone who has spent long periods in isolation. Your body will perceive sounds that are not actually there aka hallucinating. Our bodies cannot handle complete silence for long periods.
2
u/lemonjuicypumpkin 3h ago
Honestly I'd love to try it. I would really like to know what "nothing" actually sounds like. I imagine it to be really peaceful. I even like to focus on my heartbeat sometimes because that's peaceful as well. On the other hand I know what my head does whenever I'm in a really quite environment for more than a few minutes. It just goes in shuffle mode and I will get a random song stuck in my head. Being in isolation while my head goes "cotton eye joe" would probably not be as peaceful as I'd hope for.

Isolation and zero stimulus are vastly different concepts. Been millions of people who have lived solitary lives who regularly go months at a time without human contact and they survive just fine.
I don't think we're necessarily wired for it though. That level of isolated existence does something to us. We are social beings. Even those who are less so, physiologically it's still in there.
Zero stimulus on the other hand is a much different situation. That does shit to our brains.

Well, they don't travel in a black void. Just being outside is good for your being.
2
u/Aximil985 10h ago
They sure did. But complete isolation and no human interaction are two very, very different things.
Complete isolation means you sit in a room with nothing to interact or look at other than the blank floor, walls, and ceiling. You have no stimuli such as books or looking out a window at a squirrel. Your options are legit stare at a blank surface or sleep as you'll eventually be unable to keep yourself sufficiently entertained. And your brain will eventually try to invent things for you to be stimulated by while you're not sleeping, such as seeing and hearing things that aren't there. You will go crazy in complete isolation and it cannot be avoided.

I don't think this stuff is correct, isolation is not lethal. Actually I don't think any of this stuff Is correct, or at least fairly consistent. I mean no food is for average person, same is for water, underweight people will likely die much sooner,
wdym without oxygen?, the gas, the element?, if yes then you die in a blink, if not so then there are other gasses or liquids that can replace it
No sleep is kinda consistent but not against the other stuff.
What is extreme cold exposure? Isn't it about environment more than else, are you naked are you wet, also again are you fat are you thin
Heart rate at 220 bpm again what are we talking about? Lethality, heart ability? Even so is it for a length of time or just a peak or whatever...

Isolation can 100% fatal for humans, it's why solitary confinement is considered torture. It's not quick, it takes time, and they'll go bat shit insane first, but they will die.
19
u/Naive_Lion_3428 11h ago
No contact with other people, no entertainment - just you, and a room. People can go longer than 7 days, but most start to go a bit nutty after 48 hours, with hallucinations and mental distress manifesting dramatically after about 4 days.
I agree with you that if you had access to entertainment, say, video games or some great books or a TV, you might last a lot longer than 7 days.
4
u/Probably_Not_Taken 8h ago
In Virginia, 1 month in isolation is a typical internal prison offense sentence. I, and many others have most certainly gone without interacting with another person, and without entertainment for longer than a week.
9
u/Goesonyournerves 10h ago
Watertank. No light, nothing to hear, only you. Until your brain starts imagine things. And THEN most people get crazy.
5
u/ahx3000 2h ago
It's not that type of isolation. It's complete white out isolation with no external stimuli. You lose your circadian rhythm after a day and pretty much are a broken soul after 3-4 days
2
u/OhioVsEverything 2h ago
Nah, I got this. Entering room now. Will report back in 7 days.
3
2
u/OG-Enzan 1h ago
People go insane in mere hours in the complete sound proof room, no stimuli literally mean nothing, white out. Not the same as sitting in your own room reading a book or gaming for a week without human interactions
5
u/Error_Space 10h ago
White room, no stimulus, no sound, nothing interesting to look at. You just stay. Most people begin hallucinating at day 3, seeing figure who’s not there and talking to them. At day 5 or something it saids the person seeing a break on the room wall where it lead out to an imaginary world.

68
u/stangerlpass 10h ago
Holding breath 20 minutes but no oxygen 3-5 minutes seems weird aswell?
17
u/NotFEX 10h ago
The body doesn't actually use up 100% of the oxygen that you inhale right away. It continues circulating in the body until pretty much all of it is converted to CO2, which takes up to minutes. Not 20 though, that's only possible under very specific circumstances, like having hyperventilated with pure oxygen before holding your breath.
3
2
u/Live_Example_7996 2h ago
I can’t remember where I get this, but the feeling of suffocation is actually from having too much CO2 in your lungs and not from not enough oxygen.

Im confused about the no oxygen / no breathing / brain without oxygen.
So your brain can last longer without oxygen than you can without oxygen?
And what is no oxygen vs no breathing? Does no oxygen imply the oxygen was evacuated forcibly from your lungs? How could someone survive 3 minutes with no oxygen AT ALL in their lungs?

David Blaine held his breath for 17 minutes and 4.4 seconds in 2008 by inhaling pure oxygen for 23 minutes before submerging, which saturated his blood with oxygen and flushed out carbon dioxide. He paired this with months of altitude tent training to boost his red blood cells, specialized lung packingtechniques, and deep meditation to lower his heart rate and ignore painful diaphragm spasms.

u/YagerasNimdatidder 11h ago
How does holding yourr breath for 24 minutes not deprive the brain of oxygen for more than 6 minutes?

Adding to what others have said, as you dive deeper underwater your lungs (all organs and blood vessels) shrink because of the added pressure. This allows you to survive on less oxygen, which makes the oxygen in your body last longer than it would on the surface. Additionally, people can train their hearts to beat slower and put their bodies into a low metabolic state using less oxygen. Several strategies that can be employed to make oxygen last longer. Endurance training is also beneficial.

How are #3, 7, 10 so different?
2
u/redzonestriker 7h ago
I read somewhere that the act of breathing isn’t necessarily that your body needs more oxygen; it’s that your body needs to exhale CO2. So when divers train to go down without oxygen tanks, they take lots of heavy breaths to oxygenate their blood and train their body to resist the urge to expel CO2. Idk how true it is but I think it’s a pretty interesting insight

Without oxygen: Chocking.
Holding breath: voluntary, your body doesn't go into shock and can overclock the deeper breath you last took. Like diving and holding yourself down water. Average humans can't go over 3 minutes, but there are extraordinary people that can do stuff for long down water.
Brain without oxygen: this is when blood stops pumping and doesn't carry enough blood or oxygen to brain. Like heart attack/arrest.
3
u/Curri 8h ago
Choking is an internal blockage (think like a piece of food being stuck in the trachea). Strangling is an external force ("I was strangled by that person.")
Blood does not stop pumping during a heart attack. A heart attack is just a blockage of a coronary artery.

So I assume the 220 bpm listed on this post has a time frame involved.
