SOCIETY In 2018, a customer secretly photographed Geoffrey Owens best known for playing Elvin on the Cosby Show working at a Trader Joe's in Clifton, New Jersey, and the images were published online in an attempt to "job-shame" him. Instead, he was able to get more work as an actor because of it.

Post image

He went on to explain that most actors and indeed most entertainers are gig workers. For every a-lister many other actors work gig to gig and having steady work and a steady income that pays well is really hard because the field is so unpredictable. And many actors including many well know actors and artists have to have a secondary source of regular income between gigs and for most working entertainers it means getting a regular job and taking whatever roles you can get.

Also, how you gonna shame a man for having a job? If you're earning your own money legally and not causing trouble for the world, then it's no damn business of mine where you work.

That is on Cosby. He could have signed away his financial rights to the show for a lump sum like Roseanne did so the could have continued to air/stream and everyone else could have continued to earn royalties.

Also fuck the people that tried to shame Geoffrey. Man stepped up and found a job.

75

u/suspicious_bag_1000 8h ago

I don’t think it was a financial rights issue. It was broadcasters stopped airing reruns of the show so he lost royalties associated with that

20

u/FromFluffToBuff 6h ago

I think people truly underestimate just how aggressively fast The Cosby Show was pretty much yanked from the airwaves on all the channels that aired it. For anyone who had their royalties from that show, their residual payments all but evaporated.

30

u/Ohnoanywayz 7h ago

I remember (I’m an old) when the show aired-I didn’t watch it too often myself but I think a lot of people don’t realize how immensely popular it was. So the whole thing was extra shocking and weird.
I felt bad for the other actors that had to deal when all that went down. :(
Apparently Lisa Bonet (iirc) refused to comment so one wonders if he tried shit on her, too.

35

u/braaaaaains 6h ago

What’s interesting is how he publicly criticized her for some R rated movie she made, doing a racy photoshoot for Rolling stone He even got mad when she got married and then pregnant. They wouldn’t write the pregnancy into the Cosby Show spin off she was in and that basically forced her off the show.

It was just always in the news that that he had some beef with her during that period and that she was ruining the wholesome image of the show. Anyway, I guess we can all see that he projecting now.

12

u/sacredblasphemies 5h ago

I know. That was Cosby's reputation.

He shamed Eddie Murphy for using swear words in his act and Eddie turned it into a classic bit. Well before the general public was aware of Cosby's OTHER reputation. Of course, his bit is even funnier now that we know Bill was drugging and raping women the entire time.

Because it's SO shitty and hypocritical for someone doing that to act as some sort of moral authority.

I don’t think people would want to watch the show any more no matter who owned the rights. Hard to look at Bill Cosby in that role and laugh.

59

u/MongolianDonutKhan 8h ago

That's the worst of it. With Roseanne and Home Improvement, Barr and Allen may be dickweeds, but their characters are meant to be abrasive to a degree, so they are still watchable shows. Cosby sold himself and Dr. Huxtable as 1:1 good upstanding moral characters.

32

u/Initial-Way-4968 8h ago

Exactly, that’s what made the whole thing so disturbing. People expected Dr. Huxtable to be someone they could look up to, which makes the betrayal of that image hit so much harder.

20

u/Altforwrestling 7h ago

When I was a kid, Bill Cosby inspired me to want to be an educator. The fact that he did comedy records and The Electric Company, made me take certain art and English courses in high school. But by the time I was in college, his image was tarnished.

17

u/cothomps 6h ago

Bill Cosby was probably the biggest “media” star for the childhoods of people in their 50s now.

All the kids shows, “Picture Pages” at the public library, a bunch of movies, the Cosby Show, etc. etc.

It’s still hard to mentally connect _that_ Bill Cosby with the man who was drugging his rape victims.

6

u/DreadfulDuder 4h ago

Even for those of us in our early 40s, he was often a massive part of our childhoods. The Fat Albert cartoon originally aired in the 70s, but its reruns were still playing in the 90s.

And I remember Cosby show reruns were sometimes the only watchable sitcom in their time slot - especially if you were stuck with rabbit ear antennas or very basic cable TV in the 90s.

Bill Cosby: Himself was stand-up you could watch at anytime and laugh. Especially getting into fatherhood.

8

u/braaaaaains 6h ago

I never really liked him. My first exposure to him was through the cartoon Fat Albert. I was literally four and five years old and didn’t know shit about the world or race or anything and I would watch feeling absolutely horrified at how black people were portrayed. I started to get self conscious and wonder if that’s how the world saw me.

6

u/bolanrox 6h ago

That is probably why TV One "only" airs it in syndication 36 hours per week ha /s

But seriously, they legit have it on weekends from 3pm-11pm, and Weekdays from 7am-9am and then again at 6pm-8pm... in 2026 https://tvone.tv/schedule/

this is why i don't agree with trying to cancel entire movies/tv shows just because of one bad actor. television shows and films are made on the backs of hundreds of hardworking people.

imagine you stop making money for the work you've done because your boss turned out to be a terrible, terrible person. we should be able to deal with bad actors without punishing anyone who was unknowingly in their vicinity.

10

u/ScriptioAfricanus 5h ago

Thank you for saying this. I work in film/tv and 99 percent of the people in my industry are kind, normal, average people who work hard for surprisingly little money.

Run the bad apples out of town, absolutely! There’s no shortage of Hollywood psychos who need to be gone.

But let the rest of us work and do what we love - attempting to make things that give people enjoyment and escape.

I remember years ago there was an interview with someone from Friends (I think Matt LeBlanc), and he was asked about why his salaries for certain actors were so large, and he said something like (I'm paraphrasing) "look, there's no way we'll ever be in anything as successful as this again. There's no guarantee we'll still be able to find consistent work. And the studio is going to make money off our work regardless, so we're going to take advantage of our popularity while we still have it."

I do still think they made an obscene amount of money, but he did have a point.

7

u/Icy-Entertainer-1422 5h ago

he must have been talking about the successful Friends spin off Joey

10

u/Do_Not_Go_In_There 5h ago

Nah, he was talking about how the cast of Friends banded together to negotiate higher salaries. They went from $25,000 an episode at the start to $750,000 in the later seasons, then $1 million in the last two seasons.

People these days think anyone who has been on TV is a multimillionaire

46

u/parkaman 7h ago

Same with musicians. The reason you can still see that band who had that really influential album n the 80s or 90s is because they're skint. I've done live sound for nearly 4 decades and I know a lot of bands that would stop tomorrow if they could. I remember bringing my son to meet his favourite band after one of their gigs. he was really excited heading to the dressing room only to quickly realise it was just old men moaning about work, money and their bad backs, the very same as when Dad had his mates around at home.

11

u/TadGhostal1 4h ago

I recently looked up Trent Reznor and happened to see his estimated net worth, 80 million. I find that insane. It's obviously an unfathomable amount for me. But for the 60 year old Nine Inch Nails guy and blockbuster film composer? As a big sports fan, comparing that to player contracts... it sounds unbelievably low for who he is

Yeah TV stars don’t make nearly as much as people think. From what I’ve heard, being the star of a successful TV show is relative to having a well paying “normal” job in terms of money.

Likely making six figures, and the job security for 4-10 years I imagine is nice, but when the show ends they’re not set for life and will need to find other work.

And that’s the star. I would assume recurring roles pay less.

8

u/Deflagratio1 6h ago

And syndication doesn't pay as well as it used to. Used to be that a TV star could build up a decent portfolio of royalties from reruns and boxed set sales.

I don't get the mentality of job shaming. I've almost never been without a job simply because I went out and got a job at gas stations or fast food restaurants or as a cleaner if I was ever out of work. Yeah, none of them were glamorous or going to help "advance my career" or anything, but a job is a job and honest money shouldn't be looked down on.

30

u/Jason_Likes_Cameras 8h ago

The dude who played Spanky in the 90s Little Rascals was photographed working at Wal-Mart and the photos landed on TMZ. People apparently think anybody who has ever been in a movie is a multimillionaire and started making wild guesses that he'd lost all his money on drugs or gambling. I'm guessing however much he got paid was enough to pay for a few semesters of college at best.

29

u/Due-Technology5758 8h ago

And for a more recent example, RJ Mitte, who played Walt Jr. In Breaking Bad and recently took his own life, made like 200k total from the show. Across 6 years of shooting. Residuals apparently were insignificant due to streaming service models. And he ended up having to pay more than that to the IRS because his manager was stealing the money he was supposed to be paying his taxes with.

5

u/Ree_For_Thee 7h ago

Across 6 years of shooting

That's not even a normal fucking job where I live lol

4

u/Deflagratio1 6h ago

His character is in a lot of the episodes, but his screen time is very low. His actual time involvement probably adds up to 1-2 months a year. So that's $200k for half to a full year of work.

4

u/VaporProof 6h ago

It’s an entertainment industry thing. A person working retail making $50k a year will call an actor making $50k a year a loser because they only work in bit parts on tv or commercials and not marvel movies.

Why don't people get that most actors are broke as dirt? Ke Huy Quan has spoken several times about how he lost his SAG-AFTRA health insurance right after finishing filming Everything Everywhere All at Once. The actors of Orange is the New Black routinely spoke about working as waiters while filming. It doesn't really pay until you're an A-lister, which is why nepo babies do it: they can afford to work for nothing in an over saturated industry.

95

u/flopisit32 5h ago

Years ago they were job shaming Gary Coleman (Arnold from Different Strokes) when he got a job as a security guard on a movie set.

The poor guy was not getting any acting jobs. His fame had dwindled in the 1980s. He was born with extremely challenging health problems to begin with. He was effectively disabled, to an extent, because of his size.

And yet the gossip rags were hammering him because he was trying to do an ordinary job.

28

u/TheSmokingJacket 3h ago

What's worse was that his parents stole his Diff'rent Strokes trust fund money.

all of this.

There's a bunch of Top British Actors who are literally aristocrats. That Top Young Actor Everyone's Talking About in Hollywood is almost invariably "their mother was a French model and their father owns a hedge fund (which owns half of Indonesia)"

I have a few actor friends, who book a lot of work. They all have full time jobs - the most fortunate have full time jobs that lets them take a lot of unpaid vacation. Which lets them take 3 weeks off to shoot a feature or whatever, then get right back to work.

I had this (very) brief moment in my life where it looked like I might have been able to make it as a screenwriter. There was just this very, very small issue: I couldn't afford to spend several years working full time for free.* (Though of course I "pivoted" to academia which, would you look at that, kind of requires you to work full time for several years for free, so I pivoted to archives and libraries and then people were say "ah, we see what's holding you back, all you need to do is work several years full time for free.")

I do really miss it, but man, the rent's gotta be paid.

*And by "free" we mean, sure you signed a contract that would pay you ten grand for three month's work writing or cowriting a screenplay or a TV show setting bible, it's just, lol, we can't pay you right now, exactly, but it will open so many doors. Sureeee

Look at RJ Mitte that just passed away, because of some bs contract his manager had him sign, he hardly made anything from breaking bad and that’s a huge show!

4

u/alwayzbored114 2h ago

To be more accurate, if what I read is correct, it was Taxes. His financial manager asked him for tax payments, he wrote the check to her, and she cashed it personally without paying the taxes. After years of this, with interest and fees compounding, the total owed to the IRS was more than he had actually made from Breaking Bad in total

In effect, same as you said, just clarifying. It's not that his pay was necessarily bad (that I'd read?) but he just got fuuuuuuUUUUUUUuuuuuUUUUUUUUUUcked over

Look at Ke Huy Quan as an example. He wasn’t doing anything really big for decades, and now, he’s as hot as can be. I just don’t get people sometimes

u/SpeaksSouthern 7h ago

Have you met people? Have you worked a customer service job? People literally think you are lesser. Owners literally treat you like a rat

Why would anyone shame dude for making a living?

34

u/2ChicksAtTheSameTime 7h ago

it wasn't shaming as much as shock. The person who took the photo never expected they'd see Elvin from the Cosby show picking up shifts at Trader Joes.

That person was still a piece of shit for wrecking the guy's privacy, but I don't think they did it to shame him. just more of a "can you believe this?!" type thing

23

u/Far_Pineapple_1512 7h ago

The OOP might not have intended it to be shaming but the bandwagon that followed sure did.

Geoffrey Owens was in The Pitt, Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed and Abbott Elementary this year - all hot shows. Luckily it seems like it turned out okay for him.

Working at Trader Joe's is definitely OK as well

He also stopped getting residuals because The Cosby Show stopped having reruns or streaming. It's not just that he isn't popular anymore, it's Bill Cosby's fault. That show used to always have reruns on. Between multiple channels you probably could have watched it 24/7.

Shaming anyone for any job  that doesn’t involve hurting someone is despicable. Also, Trader Joe’s seems like a great place to work.

One of our sales guy works in theatre and organizes plays cause that's what he likes but that passion is gig based. You can't put food on your table if you don't have a permanent job. That's why he is also a salesman and his years of work in theatre helps him in sales.

There is no shame in having a hardworking mentality.

14

u/AdSpecialist6598 7h ago

When a few friends of mine started working in showbiz as support crew they were shocked at the number of well-known acts that took jobs that many would consider beneath them and the answer was always we needed the money for x and a job is a job; and no most of the time is wasn't because said famous person blew their money

10

u/PositivelyPerfidious 6h ago

Too many people are just losers. I tell everyone that I am a construction worker. Nobody cares. Occasionally someone wants to act like it’s some terrible job (in the circles I run in). But then it’s funny to see the difference in their demeanor once they eventually hear from someone that we own one of the biggest construction firms in the Western world.

I have tremendous respect for anyone working hard and contributing to their family and society at large. It’s mostly by virtue of luck and circumstances outside of our control that we end up where we are. Anyone who forgets that needs to do some serious introspection.

Doing an honest job is honorable.

Photographing people without their consent for online clout or drama is dishonorable whore behavior.

Get it right, society. Please.

14

u/Laxedlaks 8h ago

To be fair, isn’t this kind of an example of society actually getting it right - at least in the end?

Wtf, why should someone be in shame because of having a job. People who think about other in such a way should consider their own behaviour at first.

Pin this and shout from the rooftops for every Redditor who asks "What were they thinking?" about any actor in a flop or bomb.

They're thinking about how to pay the bills.

There's a reason so many actors and entertainers are on Cameo - they need the money.

There's nothing wrong with working at Trader Joe's. I'd even go as far as saying it's honourable - the guy is willing to do whatever he needs to do to make money for himself and his family.

Shame on whatever evil person tried to make a fool of him.

When you see guys like this working at Trader Joe’s it’s a choice. No reason for shame or support, imho. What I mean is he’s a Yale graduate son of a U.S. Congressman who chose to make a living as a working actor while taking working class jobs and keeping his time and options open for auditioning and doing small acting gigs in his 50s-60s. I admire people who work in the arts and follow their passions instead of a paycheck, but I also think part of respecting those choices and the dignity of a human is respecting when they chose to work at Trader Joe’s while taking bit parts instead of “selling out” by getting a regular job or using the privilege of their upbringing and Ivy League education for career purposes.

14

u/EducationalReview237 6h ago

He responded to the "shame" by posting a very unashamed response that he took the Trader Joe's job for the steady paycheck and benefits, end of story. He never complained.

6

u/permafrost1979 6h ago

What kind of loser do you have to be to first, take the guy's pic without his permission WHILE HE'S WORKING, post it online.

then to act like working a regular job is something to be ashamed of ?? Seriously what is WRONG with some people.

6

u/leafsforever811 8h ago

How many actors out here posting they have no health insurance or cant pay their bills? This man went and stepped up and got a job. A, J O B !!! a job, something some people won't get off their asses and get. Man is providing for his family. Stop belitting people.

Funny how people support racist and make gofund me's for them. A woman can call a child derogatory names and make bank. But a down and out man, legitimately trying and working... you'll going to clown on him. Society is a joke. Stop this bs. Fight those who need to be fought and start helping the ones who need to be helped.
