SCIENCE & TECH Japan is trialing a drua that rearows human teeth by blocking USAG-1-a protein that keeps dormant tooth buds switched off. Phase 1 is done. Phase lla in children with congenital tooth loss is next. If it works, dentures and implants could become obsolete.

I've heard about this for years, when do these trials end and go into commercialisation? Or is this just investor snake oil.

By 2030 it should be available for congenital tooth loss (people born missing teeth)

Whether it will make dentures obsolete is complicated.

Congenital tooth loss means your jawbones are still shaoed to accept teeth. But if you lose a tooth later in life, your bones heal over the socket, meaning there isnt really a spot for the tooth to go.

It might work, but would probably need surgical intervention as well. Probably wont see the drug available for non-congenital tooth loss until at least 2040.

Also, its not going to make dentures "obsolete" its causing a preexisting tooth bud (all humans [and most mammals] have a vesitigial third set of tooth buds) to grow, if you fuck up those teeth, youd still need dentures.

It only buys you one more shot at having teeth in the most idealized scenario.

Man having a third set of teeth would be awesome though, especially if you could just recruit the specific tooth you need.

I’d take a 3rd set along with my adult teeth and have rows like a shark

I don’t know how much I would like having my mouth full of teeth, imagine the food that would get stuck in there

I love it, little treat for later in the day

The drug does grow the buds one at a time. So you would be able to pick and choose the teeth needed.

I would like to state that i am very much in the camp of "this drug is awesome"

Its just not a dental panacea

Ah, here we go again, this is just not true. And the news about this trials are misleading as hell. No, you would not be able to regrow teeth by 2030 or by 2035 and even if you could in future it would be very limited

For congenital tooth loss it seems really promising. For noncongential tooth loss more research is definitely needed.

Many people regard the use of what they consider correct English usage as a sign of intelligence— an attitude with no basis in fact.

We've already read that Phase II was over and 78% of the patients grew new teeth. So please, OP, either do a more thorough research on the subject of gtfo

What a time to be alive! Trial or not it's insane we are even trying this. But my question is: how the doctors will lobby againts this since the implant industry is worth 6 billions.

2

u/Artemis_SpawnOfZeus 4h ago

It wont eliminate implants. Currently its only being tested for congenital tooth loss. Even under the best scenario, its only going to make one more set of teeth. If you lose set 3 youd still need implants or dentures.

And this makes the achievement less impressive?
