Riding at 196 mph (315 km/h) inches away from stone walls and houses on public roads during the Isle of Man TT. The course features over 200 turns with zero runoff areas, claiming over 260 lives since 1907

On average 2 participants die each year?

•

u/st0pmakings3ns3 2h ago

Worst was 6 I believe. Yes.

•

u/indifferentunicorn 2h ago

4 of them might’ve been surprised how high the toll was that year :(

•

u/Sbstnbd 29m ago

I don't think any of them had enough time to be surprised

•

u/Temporary-Truth-8041 1h ago

You're right, 6 died in the race in 1970.

•

u/RockstarAgent 2h ago

Sounds just like how those 100 miles 24 hr marathons are held even though the main guy died during one.

•

u/Gnarly_Sarley 1h ago

11 people died in 2005. Not just riders, marshals and spectators too.

•

u/Temporary-Truth-8041 1h ago

Actually 7 of those deaths were in the Manx Grand Prix in August/September of that year

•

u/xrelaht 15m ago

Rally spectators are only slightly behind co-drivers as the most insane people involved. At least the drivers have some control over what’s going on.

•

u/IHateTheLetterF 1h ago

Humanity is dumb as shit sometimes

•

u/Good_Air_7192 1h ago

Nah, Isle of Mann TT is awesome.

•

u/Individual-Night2190 50m ago

Would you say that if one of those deaths had been your partner, parent, sibling, child, or best friend?

•

u/nsfwthrowaway5969 14m ago

Every single person there knows fully what they have signed up for.

•

u/Individual-Night2190 5m ago edited 2m ago

That wasn't my question.

Amazingly, I have spent more time than I would like dealing with H&S law, vicarious liability, duty of care etc. The IoM is not governed by the UK...so I won't weigh in on the legalities because they are also unimportant to my question. I am highly aware that, for better or worse, justified or not, people can sign bits of paper saying all manner of things. Some of it is even enforceable.

What I actually asked - because a lot of people seem to struggle with this idea of empathy for things that don't directly hurt them - was whether they would still say it was awesome if it had killed somebody important to them...and not just 'other people'.

•

u/Temporary-Truth-8041 1h ago

Unfortunately, not just sometimes

•

u/steveinluton 1h ago

I went to a lot of funerals that year

•

u/JeffSergeant 1h ago

Yes, but bear in mind the TT event spans multiple races across multiple categories; the riders accumulate 50,000 - 100,000 miles during the whole TT event.

•

u/Disastrous-Tank-6197 1h ago

5 died in 2022. I can't believe this is still a thing.

•

u/macthebearded 1h ago

Willing participants

•

u/Abeds_BananaStand 1h ago

This is not a time for averages lol

•

u/NoisyCats 1h ago

It seems like people have a misunderstanding. This is a sanctioned annual race on closed public roads. Riders don't just walk into the race tent and say they want to try it. These riders have been racing for years and are highly skilled. But yes they still die because one mistake in the wrong place and that's it. Try and find the video of people sitting at the cafe with the racers passing by. It is mind blowing.

•

u/wulfgangz 19m ago

So maybe don’t have the race anymore? Why support people killing themselves?

•

u/McNugget750 13m ago

Same answer as usual: money.

If it weren't for the TT, many people would never have heard of the Isle of Man, much less visit and spend money there.

•

u/ApexGT44 1h ago

There has only been three years since this event started where there has been 0 deaths, two of which were in the last 5 years

•

u/GodModeBasketball 29m ago

And just one of the three has the Snaefell Course had ZERO fatalities

•

u/Biscuits4u2 2h ago

So this is during a sanctioned race? If so awesome.

•

u/SevroAuShitTalker 2h ago

Yeah, its an annual race

•

u/Maximum_Data_6928 1h ago edited 1h ago

It is. I went a couple of years ago, this part of the circuit riders hit 190, inches away from a 3 foot wide stone wall

•

u/HeadyBunkShwag 1h ago

Damn good shot there

•

u/Maximum_Data_6928 1h ago

I got quite a few there, but honestly when you’re so close if you hangover the wall you’ll have your head taken off it’s kinda simpler but kinda terrifying

•

u/ddBuddha 1h ago

190 inches is a weird way to put it, no? That’s almost 16 feet

•

u/Maximum_Data_6928 1h ago

I lacked an important comma

•

u/Maximum_Data_6928 1h ago

I’ve fixed it 😂

•

u/TonyCaliStyle 1h ago

That pic is awesome- his gear pops too.

•

u/Maximum_Data_6928 1h ago

Thanks a lot mate

•

u/Paradoxbox00 51m ago

At that velocity, your shutter must have been at 1/80000

•

u/Maximum_Data_6928 2m ago

Nearly haha! It was at 1/8000, iso 1000 and f2.8, there was plenty where they weren’t in focus. Hi speed+ on shoot made, manual focus and hope for the best

•

u/Budget_Low_3289 1h ago

What’s that section called? Thanks

•

u/Maximum_Data_6928 1h ago

The sections called Gorse Lea, and we were at Harold’s corner, as the wall you can watch from is the garden wall of a fella called Harold Leece who opens up his garden for spectators to watch

•

u/Budget_Low_3289 1h ago

Ah thanks. Because I saw it this year Hillberry and I’m going back next year with friends so wanted a faster section but still close to the road. I guess I just turn up with some food etc as a thanks?

•

u/Maximum_Data_6928 1h ago

Yeah man, get there in the morning, as you know they close the roads and space is limited, we got there for just before 9 and were one of the first. Another good section that’s more central to Douglas if you wanted to stay around things is Bray Hill, riders hit similar speeds but you can’t get as close as you can at Harold’s.

You are locked in at Harold’s when you’re there, so if you’re gonna go try and scout out a sunny day, there’s a co-op nearby you can walk to but it’s a good 40 minute each way, so yeah I’d recommend taking food and drinks with you for the day. Great place to watch it though. When they come past the air smacks you

•

u/Budget_Low_3289 1h ago

Thank you very much indeed. Well… at Hillberry…. My hat was blown off by a bike… and they’re doing about 140 by the wall I believe. Just before the corner

•

u/taco-yahtzee 1h ago

Just out of curiosity, what's the ballpark on that framerate capture? That's gotta be dialed to an insane value to catch that

•

u/PM-ME_YOUR-ANYTHING 45m ago

Amazing photo

•

u/frostymugson 2h ago

More deaths than years it’s been a thing, 270 people in 115 years

•

u/DookieShoez 1h ago

Okay but nobody made them sign up for this world-famous race

•

u/OnThisDayI_ 1h ago

It used to be part of the Motor-cycle Grand Prix World Championship (the precursor to modern MotoGP). Riders didn’t have a choice then. It took riders like Barry Sheene boycotting it to get to took off for safer purposes built tracks. I live on the Isle of Man and love the TT but some years have been hard here.

•

u/DookieShoez 1h ago

Uhhh yes they did have a choice, like they didn’t know it was a part of the mc grand prix wc

•

u/JustLovelyStuff 1h ago

A lot of spectators have been killed too, including kids, in that time

•

u/BcDownes 1h ago

Tbf important context of 5 classes with 1 practice session and 6 qualifying sessions and then 6 days of racing

•

u/eradimark 1h ago

It's not a race, it's a time trial

•

u/Biscuits4u2 18m ago

Sanctioned event

•

u/DookieShoez 1h ago edited 1h ago

Dude, it says it right in the title, isle of man TT, a world-famous race 😂

Yeah, it’s sanctioned lol

•

u/ThetaReactor 2h ago

Yup, this is basically the Monaco GP for motorcycles.

•

u/Lord-Lobster 1h ago

More like Green Hell.

•

u/ThetaReactor 1h ago

The Nürburgring is kinda the opposite, no? It's a purpose-built race track that moonlights as a public road.

•

u/Fragilezim 2h ago

I don't think you have a clue what you are talking about.

•

u/ThetaReactor 2h ago

It's not a highly prestigious race held on narrow public roads?

•

u/ThrowingSn0w 1h ago

It’s more that the Monaco GP is for posh gits. Isle of Man TT is for mental cases. Totally different vibe.

•

u/nsfwthrowaway5969 7m ago

Not the same type of prestigious. There isn't any yachts at the TT, that's for sure. But the people who race it are held in the highest of esteem along with the best in the world championships.

•

u/BenRod88 1h ago

You can overtake in the TT, not so much in Monaco

•

u/N0stradama5 1h ago

With how many morons that cross the road during a marathon or bike race?

→ More replies (1)

•

u/Mackem101 2h ago

And they also have sidecar races, which while slower that most of the 2 wheel machines, are absolutely insane.

•

u/Lifeissometimesgood 1h ago

Oh damn, I didn’t know about the sidecar races! The trust one must have to think about getting in that seat.

•

u/whenveganscheat 1h ago

There's no seat. Go watch one of these runs. They're terrifying

•

u/dr_stre 59m ago

Yeah it’s insane looking. It’s just a short platform with a faring on the front that they can hide behind on straightaways, and they spend the whole race leaning in various directions, including all the way across the back of the bike with their upper body out in open air, just to shift the center of gravity to allow for faster corners. Mental.

•

u/Flying_FLIcker 30m ago

James May did a side car bike race lap. It ONLY took a "few" hours of racing and a few days IRL.

•

u/Vanille97 1h ago

One mistake, and you are history

•

u/IHateTheLetterF 1h ago

Or in this case, statistic

•

u/Mindless-Platypus-75 1h ago

No matter how fast you speed, when someone passes you, you go “is this guy crazy?”

•

u/ZerpMeizter 2h ago

A tour de force in human bravery, hyperfocus, and absolute mastery over a machine. If my bike starts to wobble at that high speed, I'd completely panic and crash.

•

u/mastah-yoda 1h ago

I'd completely panic and crash

Bruh, you'd be a 100m splatter of blood and meat before you ever realised there's a wobble

•

u/SmasherOfDaButtons 1h ago

History my ass. You're a skidmark

u/geterbucked 1h ago

If you haven’t seen it find the video where Guy Martin crashed his bike at at the IOMTT doing 175mph and the bike turned into a huge fireball. He slid down the road and came to a stop outside someone’s house, the medics found him sitting on a chair in an old lady’s front garden having a cup of tea. Mental!

•

u/Temporary-Truth-8041 1h ago

Guy Martin is totally insane, innit

•

u/geterbucked 1h ago

I go to the NW200 every year, he stopped coming as it was getting too slow 😂

•

u/Temporary-Truth-8041 1h ago

Thanks for proving my point

•

u/ricoimf 2h ago

There is a difference between being brave and being batshit crazy.

•

u/KingKohishi 2h ago

Formula 1 wasn't much different in the 50s and early 60s.

•

u/MatsyLR 2h ago

This is just disturbing.

How much of an adrenaline junkie must you be to do this?

•

u/ReserveFormal3910 1h ago

This is base jumping squirrel suit level junkie.

•

u/Budget_Low_3289 2h ago

I think you should listen to Guy Martin - Ex TT racer..

“If you think it's too dangerous, go home and cut your lawn, and leave us to it." - Guy Martin

•

u/Alien36 1h ago

Oooh. What a hard man.

•

u/PulsingQuasar 1h ago

It's an ultra extreme sport with only a handful of people worldwide who could do it at those speeds and laptimes.

Sometimes things go wrong though and I do think the entry criteria isn't all that strict vs say F1 super licence requirements.

•

u/Budget_Low_3289 1h ago

What? 😅. No one does this to be hard… they do it because they love it.

If you’re referring to me, I’m just a fan of the sport and having the choice to compete and not be bound by red tape so commonly found in today’s world.

•

u/MisterSp00n 48m ago

"Alexa, show me someone who doesn't know who Guy Martin is"

•

u/Romeo9594 1h ago

As a person who ate a curb and went through an internet box at 90mph just a month ago...

A lot of us. I was stupid, I was doing things I knew better to not do. Bit me in the ass and I paid the price

Good news is I wear everything, so I picked myself up and drove myself to urgent care before everything set in

•

u/MrSquid20 1h ago

You are a durable fellow

•

u/olivercroke 1h ago

You drove yourself?! Maybe even a more stupid decision than the first

•

u/Basic_Novel_9203 1h ago

I had post op cancer pain and I drove myself to an urgent care. Not even sure how I did it. Car sideways in the parking lot. They immediately called an ambulance and I spent 18 days in the icu.

So yeah, when you are in insane pain. You’re just looking for help.

Not dead yet. Come get me.

•

u/Practical-Suit-6798 1h ago

I just started riding again after a pretty bad wreck like 10 years ago. It wasn't that bad but I broke my collarbone and was like yeah I'm not riding anymore.. but anyways just going around corners at like around double the posted speed limit which is not that fast. You know 40 mph and a 20 mph curve. My bike is small and it only goes like top speed 80 mph. Still my heart rate is like 120 on an intense ride. I have no idea how these guys do it.

•

u/MatsyLR 1h ago edited 1h ago

I had a motorbike for a short time, going at 70-80mph was terrifying.

I was happy when I eventually crashed (not my fault other driver took full blame) as it put me off riding one. I do find them cool a heck still though.

•

u/macthebearded 1h ago

It's a mindset difference. No offense intended, but someone who gives up riding for a decade after a common and minor injury is not someone who is going to be able to understand the mindset of these riders.

•

u/Practical-Suit-6798 1h ago

Oh none taken. That's my point. The funny this is I do dangerous stuff for living. But that speed and risk, I can't do.

•

u/TonyCaliStyle 1h ago

The deadlier it is, the more they focus.

•

u/Double-decker_trams 1h ago

How much of an adrenaline junkie must you be to do this?

yes

•

u/RockstarAgent 2h ago

They should invent a version of those airbag suits that instead blow up into a whole body sized ball- like those you can walk in but just to give them a chance to live

•

u/UniqueUsername812 1h ago

Motorcycle body airbags exist

•

u/nsfwthrowaway5969 10m ago

They do have them, and they are a great innovation in motorcycle safety. But at the TT they honestly are just a drop in the ocean. If you hit a wall at 160mph no airbag will save you.

•

u/snuepe 1h ago

My answer is no

•

u/ZELLKRATOR 1h ago

Perfect answer

•

u/LesJugesDesEnfers 44m ago

The island holds the Guinness World Record for greenest energy generation, with 300% of its energy coming from harnessing the butt puckering of the participants and spectators alike.

•

u/WrongHomework7916 1h ago

Probably the closes thing to Roman gladiator games.

•

u/Yestomorrow 1h ago

Apart from, you know, actual fighting. Or the combat tournaments with weapons and armour. Or Storico Fiorentino in Italy

•

u/EbbVisible 28m ago

Riders die pretty much every year. Not to diminish the courage of fighters of any discipline, they risk their lives, but these guys do as well.

•

u/WrongHomework7916 1h ago

You could argue that a rider in the Isle of Man TT is fighting his motorcycle, the G-forces, and the road at 200 mph just to keep his brain from turning into mush on someone’s front porch.

•

u/pcurve 2h ago

I think one year, the course had 10+ fatalities. Still didn't shut it down.

•

u/liongalahad 1h ago

The fact is held on an independent island that can do whatever it wants without having to respond to anyone helps

•

u/Helenium_autumnale 1h ago

An average of just over 2 deaths per year. Holy moley.

•

u/LessBig715 1h ago

Is this the pinnacle of motorcycle racing

•

u/autofill-name 1h ago

Is that a question? It might just be an apex.

•

u/Extreme-Shopping74 2h ago

As a German, just visit us atp

•

u/NoisyCats 2h ago

On my bucket list to go watch in person.

•

u/zdhonda93 1h ago

you and me both, I've been a fan for years and would love to see it in person one day.

•

u/Fortified_Armadillo 1h ago

The best illustration I seen of this is when you drive the actual course and the white line in the road goes, “whoop…………whoop…….…..whoop…………whoop, and then you see the onboards and the same white line is going, “whoopwhoopwhoopwhoopwhoopwhoop”

•

u/IdahoJones61 1h ago

Great island.

•

u/Tinselfiend 1h ago

Friend of mine ranked 8 and was never interviewd, papers only cover the mishaps, he says.

•

u/Zealousideal_Pie_439 1h ago

Love it. Go every year

•

u/Bloo_Dred 57m ago

I've sat at the hedges at Ballacraine and felt the air pressure hit me in the chest as they pass 2 feet from me. There's nothing like it.

•

u/Jaded_Helicopter_376 2h ago

I wanted to do this so bad before I had my first wreck lol. After the second I don’t think I can ride like that anymore lol.

•

u/mrbadger2000 1h ago

I just can't watch it any more. Two people I knew died there, one also killing spectators. I wouldn't want it banned but not for me.

•

u/ZELLKRATOR 1h ago

Hmm no. ☺️☺️

•

u/Wykin1 1h ago

me at 12 years old on my way home from school, to eat frosties and watch super mario brothers super show

•

u/Busy-Suggestion459 1h ago

Been there done that! #Cruis'nWorld

•

u/somedave 1h ago

Yeah it is pretty insane, but still safer than wingsuit diving in many cases. People are just prepared to take that risk.

•

u/Ok-Variation1045 1h ago

Isle of Dead Man TT 👀

•

u/Soft_Hearing_713 58m ago

Lived here for 2 years in early 2000s, these riders have balls of fucking steel covered in carbon. It's dangerous as fuck, respect those who take part.

•

u/nohiddenmeaning 46m ago

So they memorize 200 corners?

•

u/Hieroglo 7m ago

There is an incentive

•

u/fasttalkerslowwalker 41m ago

I’m too chickenshit to ever ride a motorcycle, let alone ever in a million years think of doing anything like this. But I’m glad there’s a place where people who want to push their limits this far and put everything on the line are able to.

•

u/estgirl 23m ago

Its my dream to participate in that event but realistically i know it wont happen, so i would be happy with just being there in person for once

•

u/xrelaht 16m ago

Insane as this is, there is a sidecar event at the same time. The co-driver in the sidecar is basically ballast: they’re unsecured, and the way they shift their weight radically alters the handling of the bike (trike?) around corners.

•

u/bigbillsbigtrucks 4m ago

This shit is bonkers

•

u/DirtyWizardsBrew 1h ago

That is terrifying. Any minor mistake at that speed, especially in that environment and it's pretty much guaranteed death or becoming a vegetable.

I guess you just have to be wired a different way to do stuff like this, because I get nervous going at similar speeds in Forza games and it always leads to me messing up/crashing.

•

u/GodModeBasketball 28m ago

It is so dangerous, that 1982 is the ONLY post-World War II year where the course has had ZERO fatalities

•

u/TitShark 1h ago

So if it claims 2 people a year, wtf is it still happening

•

u/AnatidaephobiaAnon 1h ago

Because people keep signing up. Motorcycle racers are a entirely different breed of racer. They are like the free solo climbers of the rock climbing world and the BASE wingsuit jumpers of the parachuting world.

•

u/ThrowingSn0w 1h ago

It’s massively important to the Isle of Man economy, and nobody can tell them not to host it.

•

u/ToriEvergreen 1h ago

Wait till this guy hears about driving death statistics

•

u/easycoverletter-com 1h ago

Wait till this guy learns about percentages after numbers..

•

u/Fatkittenballs 1h ago

Lots of activities claim lives, like swimming in the sea, hill walking or visiting tigers

•

u/prexton 1h ago

You know people are allowed to do what they want right?

•

u/dr_stre 1h ago

Tthr Isle of Man is self governing. If they want to keep holding it, no one can force them not to. They clearly believe that if the riders know the danger and still want to partake that it’s ok for them to race. Frankly, I’m ok with it too for the same reason. No one is unaware of the danger here.

•

u/DiamondDramatic9551 1h ago

Bizarre that an event is allowed where basically every edition multiple participants die.

Yes, racing is fun, but you can also race on an actual track where people don't die every year.

•

u/JeffSergeant 1h ago

People die racing on tracks every year.

•

u/DiamondDramatic9551 1h ago

Give me one racing track that has this amount of fatalities in a single event.

•

u/M1sfit_Jammer 31m ago

Nurburgring… it’s a track open to the public

•

u/DiamondDramatic9551 21m ago

Closest, but even that has fewer fatalities while being publicly accessible.

•

u/ThenIndependence5622 2h ago

They better have a tiny Bible somewhere in that racing suite

•

u/Imaginary_Ferret_368 2h ago

Nah wouldn’t be aero

•

u/KingKohishi 2h ago

It is aero when you die

•

u/lock_me_up_now 2h ago

I choked on my spit

•

u/Imaginary_Ferret_368 2h ago

You okay there 😂

•

u/st0pmakings3ns3 2h ago

Don't be silly that does nothing to dampen the fall.

•

u/random5654 1h ago

200 turns. Shows 0.

•

u/nsfwthrowaway5969 2m ago

There was at least 2 turns in that video, they are just going so fast that you barely see them.

•

u/m3ltph4ce 1h ago

I dunno seems kind of slow.. I'd go faster since I play a lot of video games.

•

u/Top_Hedgehog_1880 11m ago

just stupid

•

u/PMmeIamlonley 2h ago

Its incredible they allow it to continue with that kind of a body count. I am suprised they aren't sued into oblivion.

•

u/NoisyCats 2h ago

They still allow people to climb Everest. Some people want to try crazy and hard things. Yes it comes with risk and consequences. That's living.

•

u/Budget_Low_3289 1h ago

You’re missing a key fact, the Isle of Man is not part of the U.K and therefore has its own laws.

The sport brings much tourism and is now part of the islands long standing heritage.

This race started a long long time ago, when bikes were much slower, it’s now what it is today.

•

u/pazhalsta1 1h ago

Isle of Man is basically an independent state so they make their own rules and it’s a huge input for their economy

•

u/MatsyLR 2h ago

I suppose all it takes is for the riders to sign a waiver saying "I'm okay becoming a skid on the road"

•

u/Tweegyjambo 1h ago

Sue who?

•

u/andrew_calcs 1h ago

Everybody dies. Some like to live first. Different strokes for different folks, power to ‘em.

I wouldn’t do it because I think it’s stupid but as long as the only people getting hurt know what they’re signing up for, I’d never consider banning it.

•

u/throwawaycima 2h ago

This is the dumbest shit ever if there's that many deaths in that little time period

•

u/KingKohishi 2h ago

There will always be adrenaline junkies. Why not make profit out of them in a controlled and safe (for the rest) space?

•

u/throwawaycima 2h ago

I'm talking more so about the riders themselves

But also, by allowing this to happen in the first place, you take some responsibility in their deaths

•

u/KingKohishi 1h ago

Die there in a controlled environment or kill someone else in real life?

•

u/WrongHomework7916 1h ago

Nah this is crazy stuff. They have race tracks for this.

•

u/KingKohishi 1h ago

Those tracks are as deadly as the Isle of Man.

2-3 people die in the Isle of Man TT every year.

3-13 people die in the Nürburgring every year.

•

u/WrongHomework7916 1h ago

I’m talking about modern MotoGP-style circuits. With safety barriers etc

•

u/KingKohishi 1h ago

It does not matter. Amateur in professional circuits die too.
