During the Internship No work given in internship

I started my internship about three weeks ago, I work in the tech department at a well known bank.

Now, in the past three weeks I’ve been given next to no work to do. In my first week I was supposed to be issued a company laptop but every-time Id ask for an update, I’m told that there was some issue leading to a delay in giving me a laptop. When I asked if I could bring my own laptop, I was told no as it’s a very secure facility and they don’t even give WiFi to anyone.

Due to this, my first week was spent just watching my
Supervisor doing work and just chatting with the employees. I did learn abt the work but there’s only
So much I can learn by just watching.

I was finally given a laptop over a week later but even then there were issues as the LAN stopped working and I needed it to be able to download VScode on the laptop. Then, the only work I was given was just some basic excel work. They wouldn’t even let me run queries on sql myself despite me telling them I know how. All I was tasked to do was copy in for from one table and format it in excel and then just send the work over.

It’s week 3 now and this is all I’ve been doing. I’ve consistently asked for more work and expressed that I want to do more but it doenst seem that anyone’s interested in giving me more.

So at this point what do I even out on my CV since I don’t have anything valuable to add?

I live exactly the same situation
But since u work in a good bank , that’s what you will but in your CV

This is week 4 since i started my internship in a well known company and in a tech department but they don’t gave me a single task

I think this is how internships work

Yah but what do you say you did at your internship ? When recruiting in the future

Yeah but I’m not sure how valuable it’ll look when I don’t have much to list under it on my cv

It is not your responsibility

And just wait they will trust you more when u spend time with them

I think you either get exploited or they don't bother with you at all. Idk about USA but in Spain the government gives companies incentives to take interns as a policy to reduce unemployment for younger people. But since most graduated students and such don't know a thing about real work outside college we are totally useless and they sometimes don't bother with formation because they have loads of work already or whatever

I do think pity work is better than absolutely nothing! Atleast you have something to put on your CV. As for me, the most worrying part is my time being wasted and having done this for nothing. Haven’t gotten any work worth putting on my cv unfortunately

I'm the opposite, I guess intern is slang for "engineer we can pay less" here 😭

Either way, it's an internship, you can always jump ship later 👍

Same lol but it’s a blessing. Hard work but atleast we get to learn, improve, and contribute. In turn that’ll make us better and strengthen relationships with our teams which will hopefully lead to better odds of employment

Hey! Honestly, it was the same for me during the first few weeks of my internship. I kept myself busy by taking free online courses. But I totally get how exhausting it can be, especially if you’re doing an internship to actually learn.
Try talking to your coworkers and see if they can delegate some tasks to you. Also, talk to your supervisor again. I know you’ve already done that, but don’t hesitate to keep bringing it up.
Worst case, use the time to network. Ask people about their jobs, what kind of tasks they work on, their studies, their career paths just get to know everyone.
Anyway, I hope you’re getting paid at least lol.

It's kinda awkward to network with people twice ur age..at least for me it is😭

I get you 😂 It definitely wasn’t easy at first. I barely talked to anyone during my first few weeks. But over time, you naturally get more comfortable, and I think the work environment plays a huge role. I was lucky to work with people who were much older than me but were really welcoming. They included me in conversations, joked around with me, and once I felt comfortable, I started asking them questions about their work.
That said, don’t be too shy either. Most people will try to make you feel welcome, but if they don’t… sometimes you just have to force your way into conversations a little 😭

What courses have you taken that you’ve found helpful?

I started FreeCodeCamp’s Python course. Whenever I had nothing to do, I’d work through it and learn Python.

Find something to work, there is always some unexplored field...

I promise I’m trying😭😭 pretty much all my time is spent exploring and talking to the employees but when it comes to work I’ve done enough begging but no one seems interested in giving me anything.

Search company resources and documentation, there're planty of things to know about. Don't need to jump to work, ask as many questions possible, even the dumber one. This is your task for first 30days.
