Let’s help people build their perfect Aum template. Of course it’s going to vary for the type of project, personal workflow, etc. But I thought it would be useful to hear some Aum users templates and ideas for templates.

Honestly I'm waiting. For me iPad and hardware have gone a bit separate, but now that Fors devices are coming to iOS and Sting too I'll start building a Digitakt + iPad setup.
Use some performance FX end of chain for transitions etc. Only thing missing is Overbridge on iOS so that I can process each track individually.

Fors stuff is coming to iOS?! I just checked out Sting and that looks great too. Nothing about porting to iOS on their sites . Happening soon?

Yes to both! Hopefully soon soon.
Fors iirc is completed porting everything, and iftah has said he’s been working on it for a while I assume he’s done/close to done

My templates aren’t anything special but I do route out through network between my iPhone, iPad and Reaper to do some pretty neat shit with MMM

Wait wait wait, what do you mean you route out through network??? Can I use I iPhone to control/use the same loopy pro I’m using on my iPad??

Yes you can route midi between your devices in the network. It’s in the setting under network settings. Once you connect them you just need to route them up and set the channels accordingly

My basic template I’ve been working on routes each of the tracks on a Korg NanoKontrol to the first 8 tracks of AUM, for volume, panning and soloing/muting. The “select” button gets picked up by a Mozaic script that translates the messages from my Akai MPC mini from channel 0 to the whatever channel corresponds each of the tracks is set to listen on, so I can switch between different AUv3 synths on the fly.
I haven’t figured out any good way to use it yet, but it’s neat, and it seems to work okay.

I’ve never tried to open 8 tracks in Aum. What iPad r u running? Do u ever experiences crashes?

I have an old iPad Air 4 (A14 chip), and while I’ve never had all 8 tracks working simultaneously either, I’ve regularly had 3 synth AUv3s I could toggle between, each with an effect app or two, patterning running on a fourth track, sending to a fifth “master” track with a couple of effects, and I didn’t have any crashes or slowdowns. But I’m also not a “musician”, so I’ve never really done more than screw around with it.

I’m starting a template for an ambient techno live set. I want to use my moog matriarch as the main feature. Ruismaker handle the drum sounds thru patterning. Then use a couple of soft synths to provide some pads / atmosphere and a koala sampler for some spoken word stuff and / or other textural soundscapes. I might consider some live looping at some point as well. But I’ve got plenty of complexity as it is.
For control I have an oxi one Mk2, and an akai midimix.
And finally have an m4 iPad Air.
I’ll be running all the iPad stuff in aum. Which will house the effects, aside from the delicious analog delay on the moog.
My goals for the template are to have everything pre - routed so that all I really need to do is plug stuff in and start playing.

I still haven't found a use for Aum. When I first got an iPad for music I was told that I would absolutely need it and use it all the time.
Maybe things were harder back in the day?
I mostly use loopy pro and koala as my base apps. Sometimes gadget.

Now that you can use AuV3s in Koala it makes Aum a lot less necessary if you just make sample based music. It’s more for opening multiple instruments(internal or external), giving them an fx chain, and recording parts.

Yeah that was a very cool breakthrough for koala, though it did work fine before recording other apps without aum. Loopy pretty much does everything I think aum was supposed to do. Though even before I started down the loopy path I hadn't found a use for AUM. I'm sure some people like the workflow or something. Definitely not a "absolutely necessary app" as I was told.

I must be in the minority as I’ve always started fresh every time, whether it’s a sketch in AUM on my iPad or a score for a film in Logic for desktop. I’ve never used templates in my 15+ years of writing music. Having everything sound the same every time I load a project does not appeal to me whatsoever. I understand the desire for it because I know some people want to know that things are proper every time they start a new project, but it just has never been part of my workflow. I would rather things sound distinct and different from session to session rather than digging through dozens of files of things sounding the same, and that includes routing and mixing. Again, this is a personal decision, but I’m still excited to see what other people do and use here in this thread ☺️ just wanted to give snaps to people like myself who don’t use templates
(the one caveat being that I do have a personal sketchbook Logic session that I carry over from year to year, but I change and iterate as time goes on… so I guess I’m a liar)
