Everyone was telling me that working for a Japanese company would be hell. But time keeps passing and the job keeps being awesome.

Right? The variance is huge, even within the same industry.

I know people who got like a sub 2000 yen raise after working for a year, and then another who got like a 100k after a year (monthly numbers, both people had almost the same starting salary). You can easily deduce whose working conditions are better just from that.

My Korean is coming along well. Still a way to go but I found a class and look forward to going every week. I can use some basic sentences with coworkers and the fundamental grammar is making sense. Also a Korea option came up for our company trip so I will likely choose that. Last time I was in Korea was for a layover and I had absolutely zero idea about the language. It was uncomfortable just being that clueless about it haha. This time though I will have some grasp of it at least

There's a kingfisher that flies up and down the waterway next to my house.  Today I finally got a photo of it.  It just sat there posing for me.

Love seeing those little birds!

Tried an adult ballet class as a beginner! And decided to pull the trigger and applied for a once a week class. It’s nice to finally get some hobbies now that I’m few months in here in Tokyo.

I went out to Chichibu on Monday to enjoy the nature and chase one of their mascots at the Dahlia garden in Ogano, absolutely beautiful day and I stopped by a winery and an onsen beforehand to relax. While I was taking pictures I actually ended up meeting the designer of the character, and we ended up grabbing dinner and having a nice conversation about this kind of stuff. Very much one of those days that just made me feel glad to live in Tokyo because there's no way any of this would have happened in suburban America. (Not that Ogano's bus schedule is particularly convenient, but the fact that I could even get out there without a car is amazing IMO.)

I got midnight showing tickets for Godzilla Minus Zero opening day!  Absolute shit seats but not going to be a problem!  Minus One was one of the best movies I have seen in years.

I got row 3 edge seats... My neck is going to hate me but still damn excited.

I saw Zero on a Screen X and seeing Shikishima's plane buzzing Godzilla all around was incredible! Also the captain giving the attack order, with the ships charging, music bumping and the theater shaking was one of the most memorable scenes I have ever witnessed in a movie. Pretty much only the Rohirrim cresting the hill in the Battle of Pelennor fields topped it.

For the public holiday on Monday, I went to see the night view at Kikuseidai (Kobe) with my girlfriend! It was super pretty and reminded me how happy I am to be living in Kansai. It's also surprisingly easy to get to from Sannomiya even without a car, definitely recommend to anyone looking for a date spot in Kansai.

Now I only have one of the Big Three night view spots (Hakodate) to go.

I've been invited to my BF's family trip to Okinawa over New Year's! FIL is fully covering airfare, hotel stay, and rental car. it's my first time ever, so they're letting me go ham on all the tourist activities. gonna eat all the sata andagi I can get my greedy lil raccoon hands on.

We got a dog a few weeks ago (which we actually rehomed from another reddit user here). I didn't realize how friendly the dog community here in Japan is. Whenever we take her out for a walk at the local park we have people striking up conversations with us non-stop. It's been fun having more conversations with strangers.

Our daughters' last sports day at kindergarten went great, she worked hard before it, and kicked some butt during the events. I do a lot of photography, and have been making an effort to document my daughter's life during her years in kindergarten, and that involved a lot of different events and activities with a lot of the other families and children. I'm not good with compliments but one I graciously accepted was a heartfelt message from one of the mother's that I was instrumental in also documenting her daughter's life at kindergarten.

Honestly I was quite nervous when my daughter first entered daycare and kindergarten but looking back on it we've developed quite a community with the other families as a result.

There were a few years where I put my camera away and basically used my phone for pictures of my kids' events and whatnot. Now it feels like a lot of things from those years are missing. I really recommend parents make the effort to take lots of pictures of events with a proper camera -- something about those pictures and videos feels more durable, for lack of a better word. And yeah -- other parents always seem so grateful to have some nice pics of their kids as well.

Family joined the neighborhood Sports Day, from setup, to participating in events, to cleanup and the afterparty. Was the only foreigner amongst hundreds of people, which I'm generally used to by now, but it till makes me a wee bit nervous now and then. Our group won first prize overall, thanks in part to my dubious talent for guzzling carbonated beverages cultivated during my university years at a party school. (Whoever invented a race where people have to sprint immediately after chugging a full bottle of ramune deserves a special place in hell, but I digress).

The afterparty was excellent -- lots of nomunication with people in the neighborhood, and now pretty much every day several people on the street are giving me a warm greeting. Being accepted* into the local community really is just about making the effort to participate.

*Yes, I know there are degrees of this, but the point stands.

Took the jalapeños I grew this year and made jalapeño jam. It’s really, really good even if the consistency isn’t ideal because I couldn’t find pectin at the store and used gelatin instead. I guess next time I’ll order pectin online.

Sounds interesting, is it sweet like a standard jam or more of a chutney?

Nice, I'm looking forward to turning my habaneros & chillis into something this year. They are finally going red!
