Work/Life balance Burn out or short term disability?

Posting for an older colleague who doesn’t use Reddit.

“New job. 5 months in as a commercial account manager. Been working in sales for over a decade. Never felt this way ever.

Job is asking way too much. Never have I felt this burnt out. I’m thinking of going on short term disability which covers up to 20 weeks and 60% of my pay. This will burn through my little savings within 5 months. I honestly don’t want to stay but I don’t want to go broke after 5 months and cannot support my family (3 kids and a partner).

Every day opening up my laptop and looking at my work phone… I feel like I’m in a burning building. It’s either I burn in it. Or jump out and quit with no job lined up. Going through spreadsheets answering emails etc. my eyes. I just go dyslexic.

What am I asking? Is there anyone who went through this only to feel like it was worth while at the end? (Aside from health side. I’m working on that now. )”

Thanks in advance

Check the handbook. You might not be eligible after just 6 mos. Some places require a year before eligibility for leave of any kind other than standard vacation/sick leave.

Short-term disability, if they are even eligible for it, which I'd be surprised, is only wage replacement. Since they've been there less than a year, they aren't eligible for job protection by using FMLA and can be terminated.

Short term disability doesn't protect the job. Why not just find a new job?

The key to obtaining Short Term Disability can be found in the STD Policy. Most Companies never provide a full copy of the policy upon enrollment.

You will be responsible for paying your medical insurance premium to your employer while you are on STD.

Be prepared for the STD carrier to review your past medical records for pre existing conditions before your claim is allowed.

If you are terminated you are eligible for COBRA, its very expensive.

Honestly, it would probably be easier to find a new job than rely on STD to escape your employer.

See your doctor and discuss mental health, get some help.
