Given the chance to redo this sequel, what would you have done.
Not just 'not make it a musical' - like what concept or storyline do you think would have worked better.
I remember talking about to someone about how they could literally take it all the way back to the start of the therapy session scene of the first film but then this film follows another story line - still ending up with him in an asylum.
It would allow them to shake-off that "the joker doesn't have an origin" narrative and give us a multiple choice.

u/darkKight27 3d ago
One of the main things is actually having him to be the Joker. It really is odd that they had a whole song and dance, where he sang that he was the joker. Just for five minutes later to tell everyone that he’s not really the Joker.
8
u/JohanVonBronx14 3d ago
A bit more Joker (not in musical) would really of helped.
And I know the prison scene before the next trial explains why he changed up but it did feel very abrupt
14
u/Direct-Commission640 3d ago
The court scene should not have lasted as long as it did. Arthur being broken out of the court room should’ve happened within the first 10 minutes. Maybe we get a time gap where Arthur becomes a more traditional Joker. He has the purple suit, he’s the one manipulating Harley instead of vice versa, he’s no longer played for any sympathy and is now just a sadistic bully. He’s also good at fighting.
Harvey Dent can still be in the movie where he survives the explosion but half of his face gets ripped off and it becomes this gang war against Joker and Two Face. Maybe Two Face does kill Joker and now he’s the villain everyone fears. Maybe, just maybe, he gets a spin off film.
Also the songs should’ve been original to the film.
This is not what Todd Phillips would’ve wanted or done, but I don’t care.
7
u/JohanVonBronx14 3d ago
You got the last bit right!
I would fucking love a joker style film about Two-face (directed by lars von trier) !! He's a character that deserves so much time and care in his origin

u/deRoyLight 3d ago
Don't do the musical stuff. I thought it was at its best when it played it straight.
3
u/JohanVonBronx14 2d ago
Some of the songs were fine but agree the majority could of been cut for a tight film
7
u/Professional_Hat2615 2d ago
He is in the condition he was in the end if the original movie.
He is the Joker even without villain, now living in his deliurium. Have a part of the movie that copies "Someone flew over the cuckoo's nest" Where he brings out the worst of the Arkham prisoners. Like have some nods to other Batman villains. Like maybe The ventriloquist,The Riddler,The Great white Shark
1
u/JohanVonBronx14 2d ago
Agree about having small nods to other rouges characters. They dont have to go full blown but there is 0 nod to any of that.
Maybe an IP issue but that would have been sick
4
u/La-da99 1d ago
Being a musical is fine. I would have made the movie the trailers advertised. The Joker is in fact the Joker. He would have taken more initiative with Harley. The plot would have actually moved so the movie didn’t feel at the halfway point at the end. He would have not backed down, he would take revenge and cause chaos. The fire in the first movie had would be present. There is no breakup between him and Harley. The movie would have much quicker moved towards Joker court scene and bene like with that him as the Joker for most of it.
2
u/JohanVonBronx14 1d ago
I agree.
Someone here mentioned how they should have played the last movie the reverse of the first. Like its fine him coming to a pass at the end but the pacing of this film completely out does any progress of the first film.First film - becomes the joker
Second film - the consequences (instead of become the joker again and then consequences)

u/HobbitsHole01 2d ago
I’m not sure this could be fixed outside of a complete rewrite.

I liked it, but I would change the story to have Harley there genuinely trying to help Arthur, but him having his delusions that she loves him, like with zazie beets in the first one
1
u/JohanVonBronx14 2d ago
Agree! She doesn't even have to be a psychiatrist but even just another inmate who is reformed at this point.
I like the flip they did but given there are already so many aspects on their head this would have been a nice anchor for the lore.
3
u/Notgoodatfakenames2 2d ago
Arkham asylum, a serious house on a serious earth with Batinson as a costar. Just have joker follow him around and dance during the croc fight sceen.

Show Harley’s descent to madness

By hanging around with him! I think it would of been a nice angle to show her actually being infatuated by Arthur, instead we get a lot of tell not show.

3
u/ScubaGator88 2d ago
Maybe in any way shape or form show him actually be the joker at least in some iteration that isn't just in a fantasy world or a court rehashing. Show him becoming a maniac who finds Glee in sadism and chaos instead of just a misunderstood misfit or a guy who's down on his luck (literally the joker's actual backstories). This movie just sucked in general
3
u/Undead_and_Lovin_It 1d ago
Redo the entire plot and make it a jailbreak/fugitive on the run movie in which Jim.Gordon is chasing him on Dents behalf. There is no point in making it a trial based film, Arthur committed his crime on live tv, there was no way he was ever going to win and courtrooms are boring as all hell.
Do that and you will actually have a story which justifys musical numbers and the songs can actually move the plot forward like they should.
The only problem with it being a musical was that Phillips didn't know how to write one
2
u/JohanVonBronx14 1d ago
I like that, would give us a greater look at gotham too (which I was a huge fan of in this universe)!
4
u/Revolutionary_Rip876 2d ago
They purposely made this movie unwatchable in order to appease the ultra elite. They did not like the fact that people sided with Joker and responses of it about current times.

Don’t. Keep it stand alone
1
u/JohanVonBronx14 2d ago
I think that was the plan
2
u/Express_Calendar8278 2d ago
It was. Honestly their greed sickens me. The original looses all its punch when you consider that it happened. It being a musical was actually an original step in the right direction. A Joker Musical!? That’s fucking awesome and fits the character extremely well. The execution was extremely poor however.
2
u/The_Big_Dirty_Dan 3d ago
There were parts set up really well. When the explosion happens in the courthouse and he’s getting busted out, such a Joker moment.
2
u/bigstillz 3d ago
Here's the thing, I actually think it needed a 3rd, and I hate both movies. But the first was his awakening to madness, the second was a glimpse into his shattered mind (which is why it didnt make sense and was a jumbled mess) the 3rd shouldve been the reckoning of the real world. Cop chases big plans maybe even the bat. But thats my opinion. And its have to be a single piece, splitting it up makes the worse shit more noticeable. It couldve been a 3 hr long psych thriller that leads into a detective action flick ending. I think thats the only way that would make it make sense. Just to much excess going on in 2.
2
u/MrEhcks 2d ago
I made a long and detailed post once, but basically make it where the beginning was mostly the same just without the songs, but make it where he gets busted out of the courthouse way sooner like in the first act. when he gets out of jail make it a crime/love story where joker and Harley are taking over Gotham and a young cop is trying to stop them; with the young cop being James Gordon
2
u/Change_My_Mind- 2d ago
Not make it a musical for starters. But also follow up on the narrative from the first film on how he inspired people to cause chaos. We see some of that at the end of the court trail, but frankly it took too long to get to it. I was checked out by that point. It should have been the focus of the movie.
2
u/Clark_Kent_TheSJW 2d ago
Tell another, different origin story for the joker. Maybe recast him, maybe not: the point being to keep his potential origin “multiple choice”
2
u/JohanVonBronx14 2d ago
Thats what Im saying!! Still keep Joaquin but do a complete new origin - still ending up with him in the asylum saying 'you wouldn't get it'!!
2
u/Emergency-Sea5201 2d ago
Remove the part where he has the evil gang raped out of him.
Just sick.

I actually really like the story of Joker 2, its the execution I have an issue with.
I like the Idea of Joker 2 being an undoing of Joker, turning him back into Arthur Fleck. I like the idea that as he slowly turns back into Arthur, the court makes its decision that he is insane. Condemning to the Asylum that he doesn't need anymore.
My biggest issue is that the movie starts out with Arthur as Arthur and not Joker. Your opening number should be a big musical dance scene. People should be swinging from chandeliers and tap dancing on tables. As Joker is slowly erroded and Arther becomes his main persona again, the music and songs should slowly fade away as they were just part of the fantasy delusion of being Joker.
His relationship with Harley could be great as it transforms from a Bonnie/Clyde Romance to a woman using Arthur for status and him slowly coming to realize that all these Joker fans don't really care about him but what he represents. I do think I would prefer he as a Psychiatrist that he falls in love with tho. Just to simplify things. But maybe she is less interested in helping him and more interested in the fame of being The Jokers Psychiatrist.
1
u/JohanVonBronx14 2d ago
I think the undoing of him is a great angle but instead it felt like we had the redoing and undoing.
to have put it in a complete reverse definitely would have been a better pacing, great shout
2
u/Loud_Success_6950 2d ago
One flew over the cuckoos nest but with Joker. I personally don’t feel the need to have a Harley Quinn tbh considering they make it abundantly clear he’s not Batmans Joker, so I’d make it more focused on Arthur and scrap Harley Quinn’s character.
I remember seeing theories when the name was revealed that we could be getting a joker copycat and I’d love that, cause that means I’d be having Willem Defo as Joker.
I’d also like to see more exploration of Gotham after the events of Joker, with this massive increase in crime, fake Joker spearheading it, and introduce Jim Gordon to help clean up the streets giving us another character to focus on replacing Harley Quinn.
Have Arthur slowly take over Arkham leading to a massive revolt leading to him escaping and have the second half of the film being all about Arthur in the Gotham he created, showing tension between him and fake Joker while Gordon is closing in on Arthur.
Have it end with fake Joker getting killed by Arthur who feels like he’s now replaceable, people didn’t love him they loved the idea of him that they could place within themselves making him nothing but a vessel. He then either gets arrested by Gordon or he turns himself in, maybe he’s about to kill himself before Gordon finds him and stops him.
(This is a bit fan servicey but Idc) post credit scene of like 15 or so years in the future with Arthur in Arkham rotting away, when he suddenly gets a mysterious visit from someone for the first time in his sentence. We don’t get a good look at him with the visitor blurred or a silhouette most of the time, but he’s obviously Batman who’s visiting Arthur because there’s a new criminal going by Joker and he wants insight to the original inspiration. They exchange words and Arthur says he’s not the Joker and the Joker is nothing but an idea, something for people to latch onto who want anarchy and chaos. It ends with Arthur hinting that he knows Batman is Bruce Wayne cause of his “so called” connection with the Wayne’s.
Also get rid of Harvey Dent cause that shit was embarrassing.
2
u/JohanVonBronx14 2d ago
'I’d also like to see more exploration of Gotham after the events of Joker, with this massive increase in crime, fake Joker spearheading it, and introduce Jim Gordon to help clean up the streets giving us another character to focus on replacing Harley Quinn.'
^ YES! I know it would technically remove Arthur from scenes but even through Harleys perspective we didn't really get an in depth look at that.
I also like the flip you did there where fake Joker is killed by Arthur but I do think it was done the way we get it in order to explain any age gap between the Joker and Bruce.
I didnt mind the Harvey Dent angle but damn just not that weedy, charisma vacum version we got that we got.

2
u/Ruffiangruff 2d ago
I think the morality of championing The Joker, a homicidal maniac, was the biggest issue with making a sequel.
To make the sequel people really wanted would have required making him the most detestable person
2
u/wildagain 2d ago
they should have made it a story of how he became the joker- kind of like how it was but with machine guns & prison escapes and heists.
They could have made him a cult hero for a social movement against corruption - but not truly an answer
2
u/NotLikeThePie_4151 2d ago
What do you mean redo, this movie doesn't exist 🤷♀️
1
u/JohanVonBronx14 1d ago
ok so hypothetically - stay with me. They did make a sequel to the 2019 movie 'Joker'. What would you have it be?
2
2
u/garretthall6575 2d ago
If I redid this sequel, Harley Quinn would genuinely have feelings for Joker and they would both die together at the end. Harvey Dent would also be the main antagonist, become Two-Face after the explosion, and then be killed by Joker when he attempts to attack him or Harley. Sophie would even still hold a bit of care for Joker.
2
u/Fair-Abroad-4155 2d ago
He meets harley she's his therapist he manipulated her like animated series she helps him escape arkham and they burn Gotham down to the ground while creating the need for batman
1
u/JohanVonBronx14 1d ago
Its pretty down the line but a bit more chaos and gotham would have been nice.
2
2
u/percyssriptiide 1d ago
Maybe just remove the raping & a better utilisation of "the real Joker" ie give him an actual role than a 5 minute twist - maybe paralle his arc against Arthur , other than that i'm actually in the minority of people who actually liked Joker 2.
1
u/JohanVonBronx14 1d ago
Winning comment here!
This and cut it down to 3 songs and a reprise and this is what I would have done with the current premise of the movie.1
u/JohanVonBronx14 1d ago
Its a shame to because the guy who plays John Doe is actually a great actor.
Maybe they did it that way to amplify the idea of the Joker being chaos, it doesn't need over reasoning - but it just came across as something tacked on at the end so that they under no circumstances were going to make a 3rd.
2
u/Dense-Baker 1d ago edited 1d ago
I’d actually keep everything the same but remove the implication that Arthur was raped by the guards. You can still have them beat him up and kill his friend but the rape Shit just felt unnecessary and Gary’s heartbreaking testimony was good enough to be the main thing that changes something in Arthur.

I would have rebooted jokers entire origin story. The movie starts with him telling his psychiatrist in Arkham the story of the first movie but she tells him that there's no Arthur Fleck in their files and that he's just making all of this up. so he starts telling an entire different story about how he became the joker.
the first movie did a good job by questioning what is actually true and not, and the sequel kinda ruined that.
but in the absolute best case there wouldn't be a sequel at all. I just wish Phoenix and Phillips refused to make a sequel.

Curiosity not get the best of you??
The idea of it being a musical works really well if you just remove 80% of the songs.Arthur danced 3 times in the first one, if he only sung 3 times in this one then it would be a really good film - but the songs either drag on too long or dont add anything to the story

Historically, The Joker wants to sow chaos. If the director wanted people to dislike him, they could have had Joker harm innocent and loving characters.
For example, if he's going to be stuck in jail, have him work in the kitchen and poison the food, causing an innocent and liked person to die. Or have him kill multiple guards, including the guard who is nice to the inmates. Have him destroy the central plumbing, thus causing everybody to suffer.
There are lots of ways to induce chaos. Just pick and choose the ones that serve your vision of the character.

The only good thing about this movie was the ending with the real joker revealing himself and cutting his face in the background while Arthur dies. So maybe an obsessive fan storyline where the guy at the end being himself mentally ill like Arthur (or even in a worse way) goes through a similar situation (obviously with many changes otherwise it would be just Joker 2019 copypaste) and where at the end the guy end up in jail and kills Arthur (maybe telling him "you get what you deserve") with Arthur taking the place of Murray. A good criticism fo obsession and to what happens when people turn mentally ill killers into heroes because they hit people they don't like (politicians, actors and so on). Obviously not a musical. EDIT And obviously not a boring love story. Best part of the first movie was the fact that Arthur was a reflection (obviously not too faithful for plot reason. So I'm not saying that they are criminal) of the people who unfortunately live in harsh economical conditions and who suffer from mental illness. Arthur gets betrayed by almost everyone he trust and/or loves. He gets betrayed by his mother who abused him for years and lied to him, he gets betrayed by the government that doesn't care at all about his metal health, he gets betrayed by all the people he considers friends, he gets betrayed by the men that in his mind were fatherly figures (Thomas Wayne and Murrey) or friends (Rendell and the other guys a part from the little guy, I don't remember his name rn) and he gets "betrayed" by the woman he loves (even if we know that it was all in his mind). That's why the ending worked perfectly even if Arthur is morally an awful person, because we see the story from his point of view and we empathize with him.

u/JohanVonBronx14 2d ago
I agree, we needed to see way more of John Doe in order for it to actually mean anything at the end.

u/Artur0905 2d ago
Actually I think as a musical it coud have worked out. But I would make the story about Lee. Make the audience really believe they were in love. And in the end make Joker/Arthur kill Lee for whatever reason, showing he never cared about her
I think it would be too soon for that, but… I would enjoy if he killed her to impress someone else who was there. Someone that gives Joker’s life purpose in most (if not all) versions. In other words, it would be interesting to dive deeper into his twisted psychology by making him use Lee to gain the attention of the Batman

One where we pick up from the last film. Arthur Fleck is "dead", there's only Joker. He and Harley escape and it basically becomes a darker, psychological version of Natural Born Killers.
Arthur would still die in the end, this time by the barrel of a young James Gordon's pistol. His body flops down the stairs and the chaos is still going on even after his death.
At least that's my idea. I'd also throw in Firefly and Ventriloquist as minor roles. Firefly being responsible for the Arkham fire that sets most of the patients loose.

First of all, make it so Arthur really developed grit in the first movie...so now in the sequel he has to develop his intelligence.
Along the movie, he truly becomes The Joker and grows a small cult in the facility (alongside Harley Quinn) and escapes, starting his new life of crime

Musical is fine just do 3 songs
Break out song, court room song, arthur shot song.
Give John Doe more screen time before he stabs arthur.
Have his breakout from the courtroom last longer.
Dont rape him, just beat him up.
The inmates should be nods to rouges gallery.

I would’ve loosely adapted Arkham Asylum: Serious House on Serious Earth. Joker replaces Batman and Harley Quinn replaces Joker.
Keep Harvey Dent as Fleck’s attorney, but the bombing of the courthouse leaves him disfigured and rotting in Arkham.

Keep it a musical but show them destroying the world as the joker slowly realizes that the movement has gone too far through their actual insane actions and musical setpieces in the story.
In the actual movie the joker's change of heart felt arbitrary, not enough there for me to buy it, and spending the whole movie on the court case was anticlimatic, they could have the first half be the court case but then he breaks free and the second half shows him changing his mind as him and Harley take things too far.

Set it in Arkham with a bunch of other "grounded" versions of Batman characters with Harley being a bored and slightly abusive psychiatrist. I'd shamelessly rip off One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest and watch the money pour in

Honestly, I really did not mind the movie up until the point where Arthur gets Joker raped out of him. I think everything starting from that point needs a complete rewrite.

Not make it a sing along, no singing at all, no dancing this is not supposed to be a live stage singing and dancing show like CATS

Personally I kind of lowkey love the fact that Todd Phillips shit on his own creations more or less just to send a major fuck you to all the little toxic man children who misinterpreted Joker.
Major cajones Mr Phillips, major cajones 👍

Keep the casting. Remove all the singing. Keep the ending. Remove all the singing. Keep the general plot of the film. Remove all the singing. Keep the Harley/Joker romance. Remove the singing and... Remove the singing.

More violence, more character building, and only the court room or jailbreak song.

They should have had Arthur go on a crime spree with Harley Quinn instead of having it take place mainly in the courtroom. Harley abandoning him and him dying in prison seemed so forced and like it had no buildup at all. They managed to make a Joker musical with Lady Gaga incredibly boring and bland!
