General Bug Screen Artifacting on Wayland when entering Restart Computer menu

Hadrware: RX 9070 XT
OS: Fedora 44 KDE Plasma [Plasma Version 6.7.3] /// Windows 11 [Dual Boot]

split-second, localized graphical artifacting/tearing during
desktop UI transitions (menu closing, restart/logout screen, etc).
Never happens under heavy 3D load, gaming, or benchmarks (3DMark, OCCT).
Never happens on Windows on the same hardware.

i tested the VRAM too no problem there either

What I've ruled out:

- Hardware/VRAM: memtest_vulkan on Linux (6600+ iterations, 7.3TB+ written, zero errors) and OCCT VRAM stress test on Windows both passed clean.

- Driver crashes: journalctl -k -b | grep amdgpu shows clean logs during normal artifacting episodes — no ring timeouts, page faults, or resets.

- Adaptive Sync (VRR): happens on Always, Automatic, and Never. Never was actually the worst for me.

- Color Accuracy setting (prefer accuracy vs prefer efficiency): no difference i tried this becasue there was a old bug about this

- KWin Blur effect: seemed to fix it after several clean reproductions with Blur disabled, but it came back with Blur off too, so that correlation didn't hold up either.

Odd detail: it never shows up in screen recordings, only when physically looking at the display

At this point nothing I've tested shows a reliable reason or fix
If anyone else with a 9070/9070 XT has run into something similar i would love to know.

Here is what it looks like it only happens on this menu and only 2 times happened while opening a menu in a game: (its attached to the post)

EDIT: This was actually a knows issue with mesa 26.1.5 on rdna4 gpus

EDIT 2: no that statement was wrong its actually a kernel 7.1.6's issue with amd hardware i think https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/graphical-issues-on-amd-after-kernel-update-to-7-1-6/198522/7

it feels like a mesa regression, because I have the same issue on KDE on 7800xt over dp and GNOME on 860M on the laptop oled these last couple of days. Both systems on fedora.

Random band of garbled noise pops up for a split second on the desktop or in games, happens a handful of times over 5-10 minutes and then stops. Weird.

don't panic, it's a kernel regression that affects seemingly only 9070xt users. https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/graphical-issues-on-amd-after-kernel-update-to-7-1-6/198522

u/Glittering_Memory_64 Aug 07 '26

i noticed that the screen turns green when logging in from sddm to kde aswell😭

1

u/rip_Bacon13 Aug 07 '26

so you have this issue too? i saw a green artifacting too once but this recording doesnt have it

3

u/TSG-AYAN Aug 07 '26

Seems like a wide spread issue, all my machines have the same. RDNA 2 and 4 are affected ime.

u/rip_Bacon13 Aug 08 '26

yeah its a kernel 7.1.6 issue so until all distros get to 7.1.7 only fix is going back to 7.1.5

(7.1.7 is released but not all repos got it for example fedora still on 7.1.6)

u/dontmakemeplaypool Aug 12 '26

From what I read I don't think the fix is in 7.1.7(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2512106), just 7.1.8. But staying on 7.1.5 for now is a fix

1

u/rip_Bacon13 Aug 12 '26

yes 7.1.7 didnt fixed it i am on 7.1.5 too

u/Ugric Aug 08 '26

oh thank god my gpu isn't failing lol

2

u/Reasonable-Abies9633 Aug 09 '26

I had the same artifacts but in minecraft I was really scared that I had a chip or memory failure but in my case it happened on a laptop with a radeon 860m RDNA 3.5

1

u/rip_Bacon13 Aug 09 '26

its a general kernel 7.1.6 issue for amd gpus 7.1.7 didnt fix this only fix is going back to 7.1.5 kernel right now

2

u/Hesam-Init Aug 09 '26

bro i get this type of artifacts on my rx9060xt even with 6.18.43-1-lts kernel :( i think this issue is related to wayland cuz on kde xorg i didnt see these artifacts

1

Hi, this is AutoKonqi reporting for duty: this post was flaired as General Bug.

While r/kde allows to discuss issues, raise their visibility, and get assistance from other users out of good will, it is not the proper channel to report issues and the developers able to fix them won't be able to act on them over Reddit.

So if this bug was not reported to the developers yet and it is in fact a bug in KDE software, please take a brief look at the issue reporting guide and report the issue over the KDE Bugzilla. If it is a crash, be sure to read about getting backtraces so your report can assist the developers. If this is a known issue, you may want to include the bug report on your post so your fellow users experiencing the same thing can CC themselves to the report. Be sure to describe your issue well and with context. Thank you.

1

u/henrrypoop2 Aug 08 '26

Oh wow, had this when using latest lts kernel as of this comment, and kwin 6.7.4, i have an rx 6800xt. Was on cachyos

1

u/J4mi7 Aug 08 '26

No problem on AMD 7900 XTX

1

u/rip_Bacon13 Aug 08 '26

it only happens on kernel 7.1.6 with wayland

1

u/GloriousExtra Aug 08 '26

I'm having the same issue when I either load menus or even when I pop open windows. I'll get a white static noise in the middle of the screen for a split second. Sometimes it's just little bits of green.

CPU: Ryzen 5 5600
GPU: Radeon RX 7600
OS: Fedora KDE 44
Kernel: 7.1.6

2

u/rip_Bacon13 Aug 08 '26

thats a kernel 7.1.6 issue 7.1.7 is out but you should wait until it is released for your distro or downgrade to 7.1.5

1

u/GloriousExtra Aug 08 '26

That's a relief! I was praying it wasn't the GPU because right now is a bad time for a GPU to die.

2

u/rip_Bacon13 Aug 08 '26

also 7.1.7 didn’t fix it

1

u/GloriousExtra Aug 08 '26

Well shit.

2

u/rip_Bacon13 Aug 09 '26

you could go to 7.1.5

1

u/StratosFlash Aug 08 '26

I ran into this issue with my RX 7600 this week; I tested the new Fedora Cosmic yesterday and encountered the same problem. I hope it’s just a bug—I had already been looking up GPU prices and lamenting the cost.

2

u/rip_Bacon13 Aug 08 '26

this is a kernel 7.1.6 issue but still good to check if your gpu is failing

7.1.7 sadly didnt fix this maybe 7.1.8 will fix

1

u/StratosFlash Aug 08 '26

Just to add some info: I'm using CachyOS with the 7.1.6 BORE kernel and everything is perfectly fine on my machine. I only experienced the issue on Fedora KDE and Fedora COSMIC with my RX 7600.

1

u/ahorsenamedjeff Sep 09 '26

I get this same issue after a game crashes. Any fixes?

1

u/rip_Bacon13 Sep 10 '26

1

u/ahorsenamedjeff Sep 09 '26

Still present in 7.1.13

1

u/rip_Bacon13 Sep 10 '26

it got fixed on kernel 7.1.8 i got no issues now
