Traded my 4Runner

Post image

Loved my 4Runner but wanted something better on gas without compromising that much on cargo room. Got a ‘26 Sorento Hybrid in Volcanic Sand. Kinda crazy to see my MPG be over 30 lol. Was looking at a sportage but liked the Sorento more.

Good looking car just keep up on the oil changes since that has the 1.6T , get a catch can if you are at all mechanically inclined and plan on keeping it for a long time.

this!! i feel like people don’t realize turbocharged cars need oil changes more often. the less often you do them the more likely your turbo is to fail early, among other things. turbo cars struggle with oil dilution which destroys the engine and the bearings on the turbo!! plus the blow by, hence the catch can.

I put mine on my brand new baby and yes I've had it filled a few times it does help it isn't a solution but it stops at least 50% or more of the issues

its a great way to help slow the issue, though. also, Love the forte GT and think its one of the most beautiful cars kia released, and big plus it’s a 6 speed.

Oh absolutely love my baby full bolt ons she runs and sounds like a dream for a 4 cyl and I'm a v8 person I got two mustangs but I love how my forte sounds and the gas mileage

the gas mileage on little cars is amazing. my dad had a ‘13 mustang and had a catch can installed because the early 5.0s especially struggled with oil dilution. i love v8s aswell but can appreciate small engines with turbos. i love them!

Other thing is kia likes to try and put 0W-20 in the turbo motor which can blow it up I run 5w-40 in mine same gas mileage I usually get 40~+ mpg

i also run thicker viscosity, though it’s in the 2.0 NA engine in the elantra. i don’t like 0w-20 because i live somewhere hot and it’s basically water that’s bad in heat. thicker oil with turbo cars is the way to go. on Hondas 2.0T they recommend 5w-30 in it except the us. it’s for fuel economy, but lessens the lifespan of the motor. i think it’s silly.

It isn't worth it for .2 mpg lmao if my little 1.6T gets 32 city and 45~+ highway with 5w40 once it warms up it's like 30 weight

absolutely!! i’ll take the small hit on fuel economy for a safer motor setup, especially considering i’m hard on my car sometimes lolol

Yep, I’m big on doing oil changes every 4k miles with full synthetic (no more than 5k between oil changes at the absolute most, but lately average every 3-4k) and tire rotations every other oil change. I’ve had a few cars with turbos (2.7L F150 and my 4Runner was a 6th gen) and while I only had a catch can in the f150, oil changes were something I was always diligent on

I would put a catch can on this one especially with your vehicle being way heavier than mine. If you go to the dealer for oil changes always check the sheet they try to put 0W-20 in these... it will destroy the engine it gets way too hot to have such thin oil in it.

What oil would you recommend?

1

u/TheLittleAshy 2023 Forte GT 6SPD 5d ago

For the 1.6T i would recommend 5W-40. From any of these choices

  1. LIQUI MOLY Leichtlauf High Tech SAE Full Synthetic Motor Oil 5W-40
  2. Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40 Full Synthetic

If you don't like any of these choices or wanna use 5W-30 that is also OK .. but one important thing to know is that you MUST use oil that is API SP .. do not use anything else. API SP is formulated to prevent low speed pre ignition which can happen on these cars because they are direct injection.

If my first year of maintenance is included with my purchase and I ask for a different oil, will the techs actually do that? I’m capable of changing my own oil but I’m busier these days and at that age where I don’t mind paying other people to do stuff lol

Just make sure they don't put in 0w-20 and if it says they did tell them to change it the specifications literally say 5w-30.

Okay thank you! I haven’t had a chance to flip through the owners manual just yet and wasn’t sure if the dealerships service dept would push back if I asked for something other than 0W-20

1

u/TheLittleAshy 2023 Forte GT 6SPD 5d ago

The manual says 5w-30 if they push back keep all records if it causes engine failure I personally wouldn't allow it though at the end of the day their neglegence cost you a vehicle and headache, I just do my own oil changes but I have the time to, I had a massive fight with my dealer over it and they even tried to make me pay thousands for warranty repairs I had to go to the attorney general but that isn't every dealer. I hope yours is better.

Thank you! I love the color on this. Almost went with white but saw this and thought it looked way classier

Own a 2020 Sorento, the Hybrids have done very well in ratings by consumer reports. 4runners are great for what they are, but this has to be way smoother to drive, nice choice

1

u/Moose328 5d ago

It’s definitely a lot quieter that’s for sure 😂 the interior feels more premium and while I had to give up vented seats and a heated steering wheel from a TRD off road premium make the deal work (still have heated seats though), I’m good with it. I’m in the middle of a career change and I anticipate having a longer commute so I needed to be prepared for that

1

u/Murfdigidy 5d ago

Oh wow you had the real nice 4runner. Most 4runners, like the SR5 are very bare bones as far as amenities. Huge price difference between the two of these, especially considering you had a TRD off road premium

I’ve been recommending the new KIA hybrids. They are really nice and equipped for the price compared to Toyota and Honda. My gf got a 2026 Highlander hybrid and we love it, but I understand $53k +TTL being steep for the base hybrid for most.

I've got a 2027 Kia Seltos SX prestige arriving in about 6 weeks. I plan on installing an APP A1 v3.3 catch can. I also plan on providing my mechanic the oil and filter at oil changes. I had planned on 0W-20 Penzoil Platinum synthetic oil for the 1.6 turbo engine ( recommended by manual). Should I consider using 5W-30 instead ? Thanks.

Bought ours 3 months ago with the same color. Love it! Yours have captain chairs?

3

u/Moose328 4d ago

Yep, captains chairs in the second row. I took my friends for a ride, since I was driving for the plans we all made and they were huge fans 😂

I drive a 5th gen 4r and am about to make the switch to a telly. I am so nervous it doesn't make sense.

The telluride looked nice! I would totally get one but I felt that the Sorento fit my needs just fine as far as space and fuel economy was the largest factor
