Would have thought it was g7 of the finals the way people were reacting in the game thread lol.
Incredibly sloppy throughout, in particular in the first quarter, but nothing that can't get fixed and reps will definitely help. Nuggets were very aggressive with their defensive coverage for a preseason game which didn't help things either. Still interesting to see the stylistic change in the teams approach on both ends despite how iffy the execution was.

u/Deidarac5 22h ago
People keep pretending like this team has been together for years or something. Lakers came out cold then held it down fine after. Same people hating are the ones saying 76ers losing to g League Celtics didn't matter.

I mean, besides this, Denver was literally playing with a lot of effort. Which is weird for a preseason game. They triple teamed Luka in the 1Q. Cam Johnson committed a flagrant 2 and got ejected. Doris Burke was crashing out in the broadcast.
In the postgame JJ said the team didn't start the game with enough energy and then said "it felt like a preseason game" and laughed. I think he's implying Denver didn't play like it was a preseason game.

u/Important_Carpet_615 22h ago
Especially with kessler! He's a very good player who struggled after a year off.I have watched a lot of utah games to let you know we shpuldn't worry about him.he will be fine
7
u/carlonia 21h ago
No need to be alarmed, but his offensive game is limited. That’s a legit criticism, but you’re right that he’ll be fine
13
u/lawschoolthrowaway36 21h ago
I was alarmed by how Denver wasn’t bothered at all by him at the rim on either end. And his poor screens.
This is the worst he’ll look all season but I did think his rim protection at least wouldn’t disappear even if he’s rusty in other areas. He got abused tonight. It was hard to watch at times
10
u/PrivateAids 21h ago edited 20h ago
Worst he’s looked all season and he’s played 1 combined game of basketball. What are you smoking man.
Edit: i misread, my apologies on jumping the gun.
7
u/YouDontMessWithZohan 20h ago
Think you misread what he said. Worst "he'll" look, meaning he's only going to get better.

u/thevisitor 16h ago
May take away is that I think we needed more dress rehearsals with starting lineups because they all looked like they need way more reps to learn each other and build cohesion. These guys are all young, its what the preseason is for. Playing them only one game together is just something I disagree with.

Mamu is such an incredible player I am very impressed. Guy just makes winning plays. He can shoot the 3 ball better than league average. Passing. Block shots. Rebounds. He does a bit of everything.
Hoping he’s in the MIP convo
7
u/whythishaptome 21h ago
I don't know where that guy came from but he's be very impressive so far. Hope he can keep it up
9
u/Deidarac5 21h ago
Idk mip but maybe 6th man. He was already kind of decent last year just on a quiet team. Usually mip should be like a bad guy turning into a star.
20
u/motorboat_mcgee 22h ago
Kessler did not look good tonight, but Mamu at the 5 minutes did. Will be interesting to see how those two matchup against various teams...

u/gleophas Los Angeles Lakers 22h ago
Reaves and Luka gotta cut down on the turnovers
→ More replies (1)47
u/throwmeinthetrassssh 21h ago
You kind of expect that from playmakers early on, especially with a whole new team. Their passes are obviously rusty and the other guys don't know exactly when or where to expect them yet. That fortunately will improve naturally as the season progresses
11
u/Deidarac5 21h ago
Super expected. Every other player have not played with a Luka Reaves passes are going to look sloppy for months.

Everyone knows DK is done, but so is Bronny. People need to stop with the delusion that he can become something. He is not an NBA player. It's time we stop with this charade. Give that roster spot to someone who deserves to be in the NBA.
57
u/XxEpicMonkee King 21h ago
i actually agree at this point, jaden hardy at LEAST showed value getting 13, bronny played nearly the same amount and got no points at all with 1 board and an assist. i think it might be up for him
21
u/takahashism 21h ago
Also It make more sense to cut Bronny since hardy has a bigger contract that can be used in a trade . I just can’t see them cutting him lol right after his dad leaves too
15
u/maxxie10 20h ago
Unfortunately I have to agree. I had hope for Bronny coming into this season but there's been no improvement in pre-season at all. He's the most timid player I've ever seen. Any theoretical potential he has will never be realised with how scared he is to do anything.
Best case scenario for him is to get cut and end up on another G-league team where hopefully a different coaching staff can shake him out of his fear. Our coaches have had two years and haven't managed it.
6
13
u/Disclaimz0r 14h ago
Bronny has been done since he was drafted, lets not joke ourselves. He was never and will never be an NBA caliber player. He's too short, he's too unskilled.
9
2
u/crimedawgla 10h ago
I’d be pretty surprised if they cut two guys and carried $6.5m of dead money all season just for the opportunity to sign Dalano Banton or Christian Koloko.
5
u/JollyGraduate95 Black Mamba 8/24 20h ago
I have to agree here. Better off getting someone else who can atleast handle the ball, if not anything else
6
u/Tiny_Spread5712 12h ago
He was essential drafted out of highschool and never had the chance to be number one on that team. When he got heavy Gleague minutes he was 20 5 and 5 with 2 steals and a leader. He just can't step into the role that team is pushing him towards, but we saw that same thing with Christie.
We put him in the garbage time, 3rd tier playmaker role, and he sucked on both ends. Then we took all playmaking duties off of him and said focus on D and he excelled.
Bronny is right there. He's got a bunch of skills that are at the top of the gleague and the coaches just need to pick a narrow one to focus on and he can be a great NBA role player. He just will never get the reps to be an NBA playmaker because that comes from being the man on your team from jr high through college.
9
u/jsun_ 12h ago
This argument of "look who he's playing with" is ridiculous. Look who he's playing against. If he was a legitimate NBA talent, he'd be showing us something in garbage time minutes not looking lost out there.
→ More replies (2)-10
u/Abject_Software_9007 16h ago
I am not that active here but it's the same 4-5 accounts crying about Bronny every single season, lmao. He's a third-stringer who won't see meaningful minutes unless injuries force the issue, yet you people want these players publically executed after each game. Apparently, a fringe roster spot is a bigger crisis than the bigger problems/players who are supposed to contribute to winning. The obsession is genuinely bizarre.
JJ and the coaching staff work with these players every day. Maybe let the people who actually evaluate players make the fucking decision. If Bronny isn't good enough, he'll get cut when the team decides he's no longer worth keeping. Your daily campaign isn't going to change that. I've seen the same handful of accounts recycling this shit.
3
u/jsun_ 12h ago
I don't care if he's just a 3rd stringer. The simple fact is if injuries happen and he were to be relied upon, we are screwed. He isn't good enough to even be a 3rd stringer at this point. He should be a 2-way that spends his time in the G-League but he's on a guaranteed contract and taking up a roster spot.
I'm sure the coaching staff likes him. He's a good kid that tries hard. However, that isn't enough to be in the NBA, and if you don't think a major reason he isn't being cut is because of the politics involved, then you're just being ignorant. If his name wasn't Bronny James, he would've been cut already.
1
u/InTheBinFC 2h ago
Isn't that exactly the point, though? The 14th or 15th guy on the roster is rarely going to make or break a team. If injuries hit the guards, there are enough options to shuffle things around and try different lineups. If both Luka and AR go down, you're screwed regardless. Unless you're expecting prime Steph Curry to replace them, no 3rd-string guard is saving that season.
But if Kessler, a 7ft dude who's just coming back after missing a year, goes down, what exactly is the plan? Looney and Mamu? That's an actual roster construction issue, among others, because there's no reliable backup 5 to fall back on.
This sub has its priorities fucked up. People are obsessing over the 14th man while ignoring glaring weaknesses in the rotation. I've never seen a fanbase make this much noise over the back end of the roster. Honestly, I hope they cut him just so this sub can stop crying lmao.

He's got the physical tools, the work ethic and the iq to make it. He's still younger than some rookies.
Dalton is 25, hasn't shown significant improvement in his time in the league and has questionable iq.
Bronny is a 52th pick. If in 2 years he'll be a rotation player, which he can be, it will still be a win for the org.

Why aren’t we talking more about how good Mamu has looked all preseason? Can’t wait to see him in the reg season

u/neiljust07 21h ago
Sixth Man of the Year type of shit. Looking forward to seeing him with Sexton as sparkplugs from the bench alongside Jake, Carr, and Adou

I said this in the other thread, but $12 mill for an NBA career for Dalton is pretty amazing. Good luck in Europe or China or wherever he goes.

u/WakiLover Darvin Ham hates Japan 21h ago
And it was an easy 12 mil. Basically guaranteed, didn't have to do much hustling and grinding in the G-League, just mostly chilling on the bench and going to practices.
6
u/neiljust07 20h ago
Even went on an all-expense paid trip to Slovenia. Just a shame he couldn't live up to his actual potential because we've seen it. Absolute flamethrower with the athleticism to go with it. If he played with Hardy's bullishness, the kid would be an asset just because of his offensive talent alone
37
u/Tall_Succotash 22h ago
Denver came out with playoff defense and everyone was caught off guard.
I felt we got a lot of paint touches and tons of three point opportunities, we took over 40 threes so that’s definitely JJ’s goal here.
Chemistry with Luka/walker needs some work, it’s just gonna take some time. Nuggets look like the vet team they are imo.
9
u/Thegoodking666 Sandro Mamukelashvili 54 21h ago
Yup, despite the very sloppy execution of it, there's very clearly a vision for how the team is going go play and its very encouraging.
17
u/whythishaptome 21h ago
The double/thriple team on luka worked more than I'd want it to. They were swarming him when he had the ball.
8
u/TheWestRemembers 77 21h ago
That's on JJ to call a time out and be like 'hey next time they do this, one of you run to Luka, get the ball, and have an advantage on offense.' We can't have Luka doing fade away passes, they're just jumping at them like safety's on a Hail Mary.
5
u/Itchy-Pudding-4240 21h ago
im going to predict lakers are going to be caught off guard by defense throughout the season
10
u/Cambocant 22h ago
I'm sure Walker and Luka will develop chemistry quickly but they don't have much of it now.
19
u/bowlcutsrbad101 21h ago
At this point I'd take a retired CP3 over Bronny
12
u/Batman4815 20h ago
I would have deadass preferred Ben Simmons over Bronny and DK lmao
-3
u/zdravkov321 18h ago
Ah yes, a mentally fragile player who took himself out of the nba would have no problem handling the lakers spotlight and associated pressure.
3
5
u/EdreesesPieces 18h ago
he would have a problem handling it, but less of a problem than bronny and dalton

19
u/tntweknowdrama1086 20h ago
I was in the front row for this one. The nuggets sold out to take Luka out of the game for Q1. They couldn’t sustain it bc by half he had 15 and LAL almost closed the gap
Sandro and grimes really vibed together for a good stretch. Sandro is really impressive when he gets in a groove on offense. Seems like a fairly poor rebounder for his size and speed though.
Walker gets no calls. He was fouled in the paint in the first quarter and a few more times throughout the game w no whistle. Curious if that’s been a constant for him in his career? Anyone know? This is my first few games watching him
I think Jake looks better this year. Shot is falling and when it is, he’s a different player.
Zaire was electric tonight. His defense on Murray was good and set a great tone. His libs were fun. His 3 ball was on.
Matisse wasn’t on tonight imo, but still like him on this squad. There are moments this team plays some realllly good defense and then just huge lapses
Manon, knecht, bronny, and Castro/ cut bait. I know people tend to like manon on here but I do not know what yall see.
10
u/ActualyHandsomeJack King James 6/23 20h ago
Jake was really good early last year too. He just kinda fell apart in the latter half
1
u/tntweknowdrama1086 12h ago
I remember. Jumpshot can be like a golf swing but it’s hard to rework it mid season I think. Haven’t had to do that personally during a season. Felt bad for him bc I knew the shot was there last year.
If the shot stays, where else do we want to see Jake improve
72
u/TopPolicy8454 22h ago
Bronny and DK are some of the worst players I've seen, can't believe how much both of them are making guaranteed.

Kessler didn't look good at all today. Disappointing. Some good things, some bad things. Lakers definitely need to work on figuring out what to do when teams hard double Luka when they try to screen with Kessler. Kessler isn't making a lot of contact on that screen and both guys trap Luka hard. Need better options for Luka after the hard trap. Glad it happened during a pre-season game so the team has time to work on it.
10
u/Staph_Untreated 21h ago
Wouldn’t be surprised if they struggle early in the season while trying to build chemistry.
9
u/whythishaptome 21h ago
It was definitely disturbing how well that double team worked on Luka a lot of the time but at least they have a chance to figure it out now
22
13
u/Mean-Nothing8598 22h ago
Mamu and Grimes had awesome chemistry in the 3rd. Finally something to look forwards to off the bench
11
u/rjaysenior 21h ago
Some takes: Zaire’s energy is great for the starting unit. Grimes is better shooting and creating off the catch. Laravia’s new jumper from 3 is wet. Mamu is well rounded and isn’t afraid to let it fly after a couple misses. Love the confidence he has out there. Sexton organizing the 2nd unit will be like manna after this preseason. Adou and Carr getting rotation minutes should be a lock. Think I’d rather have open roster spots than keep Bronny or Knecht.
14
u/Ainzburg Luka Magic 77 22h ago
Hardy my garbage time god 🔥
11
u/neiljust07 21h ago
We keep Hardy for the Hardy Party time. Man actually attacks and played well with the regular guys
22
u/neiljust07 21h ago
The hope is that Kessler gets that rust out quick because we don't have a defensive anchor with him when he's off the floor and he showed this game how he's a non-factor when passive.
Here's hoping Rob finds a fuckin way to shore up our back-up 5 with the contracts he would send out. At this point, I'm cool with sending out Bronny and DK. Hardy can at least be a sparkplug that attacks despite all his flaws
Also, the Mamu show has been amazing to watch this preseason. Ziaire and Jake are fun to watch. Luka and AR gotta cut down on their turnovers with the team moving more to help Luka on blitzes
10
u/Deidarac5 21h ago
I mean you can't defend well against jokic unless you pressure him down. No one's going to work that hard in a preseason game. Nuggets overall had a good game and Lakers had a bad game and wasnt too bad at the half.
16
19
u/LakerDoc 21h ago
Lakers need to trim the fat. Get a 2nd round pick for Bronny from Philly or Cavs.
Cut DK.
These two don’t belong in the NBA. Wasted roster spots.
Sign back up center. Get starting PF if possible
16
u/zdravkov321 18h ago
Right! Two guys that don’t belong in the nba get flipped for a starting pf and backup center. It’s so easy, how come pelinka didn’t think of this before?!
I swear, some of you guys have the dumbest suggestions.

No one giving a pick for Bronny 🤣🤣
He would be traded by now if anyone was offering assets.
1
u/LakerDoc 12h ago
There were talks about Bronny having some value around the league. Might get a low SRP. If there’s no value then just cut him. Next year is a team option
3

Getting Bronny guaranteed contracts while lebron dipped out to philly to grab some milk is some devious stuff lol.
1
-1
u/LudwigNasche 21h ago
Trade Bronny for a pick then send it alongside Dalton for that athletic Milwaukee C that can't protect the paint to save his life, but that is going to have a couple of highlight dunks every game.
11
u/InTheBinFC 21h ago
It's gonna take 12-16 games for this team to figure things out.
I've said this before, but people constantly going after DK, Bronny and Hardy have their priorities mixed up. These are 3rd-stringers who aren't getting minutes unless injuries force JJ to play them.
JJ has already shown which lineups he's going to rely on once Sexton is back. It's a 10-man rotation again.
The bigger concerns are the backup 5 and the main lineups still not looking particularly solid. This team lacks size and strength, and they're going to need Sexton's scoring and Adou's athleticism to address some of those issues.
19
u/ItsAboutDatTime 22h ago
Only 14 turnovers tonight but 11 of them were from Reaves and Luka and they only had 5 combined assists. They're veterans but keep trying to jump and then pass mid-jump and praying the pass actually makes it to someone.
LeBron ain't here no more to be the connecting piece. They both need to get better at actually being the engine of the offense without turning it over.
19
u/AvocadoSpiritual8849 21h ago edited 21h ago
Thoughts on the game:
Fuck Hardy, fuck Bronny, Fuck Knecht. Hopefully they're off the team by opening night.
Loving Zaire Williams
You would think this is game 7 of the finals the way the Nuggets were doubling Luka
Not worried. We haven't had a good preseason in half a decade, shouldn't really expect that out of them
Loved the effort to get back in the game, until the 3rd stringers came in
Anyways, that's a wrap on preseason
See y'all when it matters

Watching the replay. No big deal on Kessler. Dude hasn't played against a real team in who knows how long. He'll be alright.

The only obvious thing I saw tonight is Denver’s coach is goofy looking af!!
3
u/Deidarac5 21h ago
Honestly the big take away is role players did well and stats were a bit slow. Good issues to have.
Kessler is never going to be a huge scorer but he got the blocks and hopefully can get those rebounds not worried after missing a year.
Reaves and Luka just had bad shots tonight and low synergy with a team that's never played together. Got like 8 new guys on the floor turnovers are going to be rough for awhile.
Best signings so far are mamu and ziaire great role players for the future.
Hopefully thybulle and grimes can work the defense a bit better but it's against jokic. Neither look as bad as players like Vando and Gabe Vincent so not worried.
3
u/Southern_Clerk8697 17h ago
Kessler never gonna be a huge scorer but he's gonna get up strong when he gets the ball. He was going up really soft on a lot of those attempts
3
u/swords_devil 22h ago
Seem out of chemistry, it will get better. Kessler look slow, but then again it's his second game back and first game with Luka.
Z. Williams are good, Mamu are great.
Defense really bad against p&r, but then again when Jokic screen it's really hard to guard that, unless you have Wolves personalle with multiple big body to throw and just able to be physical.
5
u/amnesiac909 22h ago
Starters looked out of sync but the bench was solid. Honestly not a bad game given we stayed close during the non-garbage minutes. Chemistry will come
4
u/onsome0 Los Angeles Lakers 21h ago
Team will be fine. Slow start because of the turnovers and poor reaction to Denver's defensive PNR coverage. Then we won the next 2 quarters and made it a game going into the 4th despite Luka/Ziaire not even in the lineup in the 2nd half.
Team just needs chemistry and that's what the regular season is for. Preseason is just about getting conditioned and staying healthy.
5
4
u/lawschoolthrowaway36 22h ago
Well, I’d say that demonstrated the importance of preseason reps before the games count.
Kessler looked out of sorts on both ends. Luka and him unsurprisingly have zero pick and roll chemistry right now, and ended up playing 12ish total minutes together out of 5 preseason games.
Gonna just have to hope they hit the ground running to open the season, as the approach to the preseason gave them virtually no foundation to go off.
2
u/Nyooo1731 LAL 21h ago
Mamu and Williams with a great game. Kessler need to get that rust off. Reaves and Luka need to reconnect or Luka will be hit with double and triple team that will result in turnover party
2
u/EdreesesPieces 18h ago
lakers put a brand new team together. first time reeves luka + kessler really started playing together meanwhile nuggets core been playing for like 5 years. calm down. there will be a process over 20 games probably. we'll still beat bad teams but against the good teams it could take some time to gel. similar to 2020

u/LebronzoBBB Fuck that Homeless Bitch 21h ago edited 21h ago
Takeaways from what I seen this preseason.
Reaves handle is insane but his turnovers are costly hopefully he can clean it up.
Williams is a nice addition his defense is elite on guards and plays well with Luka possible starter early on in the season.
Thybulle got good energy and defense but that shots needs to drop hopefully he can replace smart
Mamu is a nice Rui replacement with better rebounding and playmaking ability.
Kessler great defender and I like his aggressive on offense just needs to finish more consistently but love the effort.
Grimes will be a good catch and shoot threat and driver but I expected more of a on ball creator. His defense is only limited to guard 1s and 2s Murray looked bigger than him tonight.
BRONNY and Kencht please get off my team I like BRONNY because everyone cheers for him tho he can be the Jared Dudley role.
Hardy can be a solid Third string guard.
Overall excited for Laker basketball!

Ngl but the bench depth improved. Not worried if Luka or Austin is off the bench coz we have either Mamu Grimes, and soon Sexton to score off the bench. Might have those OKC and Celtics level of bench where if either Luka or Austin scores bad, anyone of them would shorten the deficit

Rough games, sloppy turnovers, and awkward execution should always be expected with a completely new team. The Nuggets have played together for years. Thankfully, the Lakers' early schedule isn’t too brutal.
Some of these rage-baiting comments during a preseason game about "trading everyone" and "overpaid contracts" were hysterical.
Well done, bots. 🤖✔️🤣
4
u/3nnui 2 22h ago
If the first game of the preseason was time to get delusional, this game was time to get realistic.
We have some nice pieces, but we also have some holes, and we can't pretend otherwise anymore.
This team needs to get more athletic.
1
u/Deidarac5 21h ago
I mean no one watched all these games and thought Lakers were clear favorites. But all teams looked rough outside of like rockets and spurs. We changed our entire line up it's going to be a slow start
2
u/Lakerman0824 21h ago
lol this team is soft and will get picked apart in the playoffs. Solid 5-8th seed team
2
u/jsun_ 21h ago
Mamu at the 5 works. It was our best lineup tonight and has had success throughout the preseason. I would still like another center on the roster, but what I don't want is to use our limited assets just to get someone better than Looney. We need to get someone who is going to be our backup 5 for years to come. I'd much rather be patient with our assets and acquire a player who will be a part of the rotation for many seasons whether that be a backup 5 or a wing.

I can't lie, Kessler looked like a scrub out there. Bad rotations, filled the gaps poorly, bad pick and roll defense, no paint presence/everyone was attacking him, bad pick and roll offense, bad screens, weak finishes at the rim. Almost like everything went wrong with him.
I hope that was just a one-off, but I did not like what I saw at all.

Good for Bronny to finish his career on a high note. He failed to score in his 12 minutes, but finished the game with 1 assist and 0 turnover, this is a noticeable improvement even more when we think he finished with only 2 PF.
