Grass Finally feel like I’m seeing results! (Southern Ontario)

Regraded and laid sod 3 years ago. I had fungus shortly after from overwatering that really hurt the density of my lawn.

Still a few patches I’m working on with some clover & crabgrass. However, I finally feel like I’m in a decent spot going into winter!

Here is a picture of my lawn in greater Toronto area. I'm going to mow today. Is it too late to fertilize this week? I also have to remove some weeds

Help with the first mow in zone 8

I live in Vancouver BC, zone 8.

On September 25th, I aerated, detached, added soil, a starter fertiliser and overseeded my 2000-square foot lawn with 25 pounds of a 90/10 TTTF/KBG mix. It's been 3 weeks and the grass is coming in patchy, tall in some areas and barely anything in other areas.

I'm looking to mow the lawn for the first time this Monday, October 20th and had 3 questions:

  1. What height should I cut the lawn for the first mow?

  2. How frequently should I mow the lawn?

  3. On what date do I stop mowing the lawn?

Overseeded with KBG and I was starting to lose hope with certain spots. But surprised to see it's still growing in. Currently at week 4.

Patience goes a long way! Don't lose hope!

Grass Fall watering schedule

So I was doing 6 times a day for 5 minutes between 10-6 every day for a month..now that in getting outside the germination window for kyb and frost is probably hitting tonight in Toronto. How often should I water? I'll probably have to revisit this in the spring since I still have barespots.

Should I do 2 times a day for 10min? I'm thinking I just shut it all down on the 30th

I'm on the north end of Toronto

Not trying to take away from anyone’s efforts but… how much of the visual upgrade from the fall overseed project is actually simply a result of watering your grass 4x per day for 2 weeks?

This was my first time overseeding and trying to improve my lawn. I thought I might be too late, given I started the renovation Sept 23rd in YXH. Although not perfect, I would say I did not do too bad! I'm already excited for spring!

Is there anything that can/should be done to bare dirt to prep for overseeing in the spring?

Lawn top dressing.

Am thinking of getting one of the big 1 yard bags they deliver to your home to be used solely as top dressing for my lawn. Is there any specific kind to look for that's best or a combination of soils? Also, can it be applied late fall (now Oct.) Or does it make any difference?

Crab grass relationship issues

I have a couple areas on a recently seeded part of our front lawn that has some large sprouts of crab grass.
My wife today asked what they were, and how come we can’t just let our whole lawn be crab grass. Should I start packing my stuff up and looking for a new place?

Did I miss the fall fertilizer window in Southern Ontario? Want a thick, green lawn next spring.

Hey everyone!
I’m in Brampton, Ontario (Zone 6a), and I’ve spent most of this year renovating my front lawn. I’m hoping to get some advice on whether I should fertilize one last time before winter.
A little background:
Renovated different sections of my lawn in May, June, and August.
Used the same cool-season grass seed mix for all sections.
My older renovations received nitrogen fertilizer (27-0-2) around August.
The newest section was seeded on August 14 and established really well.
I’ve also been tackling dandelions and plantain, with pretty good results.
Current situation:
It’s now mid-October, and my grass has noticeably slowed down. I last mowed about 10–12 days ago at 3 inches, and it doesn’t seem to have grown much since.
The older renovated sections have also lost their deep-green summer colour and are looking more yellow-green/olive, while the newer sections are still relatively green.
Overall, the lawn is fairly dense, and I don’t see much actual dead grass.
My goal: I really want a thick, lush, uniformly green lawn next spring, without the uneven colour I’ve been dealing with this year.
My questions:
Have I already missed the ideal fall fertilizer window for Southern Ontario?
Would applying 27-0-2 now still benefit the lawn, even though top growth has slowed?
Should I use a fall/winterizer fertilizer instead, or save fertilizing until spring?
Could the yellow-green colour be a nitrogen deficiency, or is this normal seasonal behaviour?
What would you recommend doing now to give the lawn the best possible start next spring?
I’ve attached current photos for reference.
Would especially appreciate advice from anyone maintaining cool-season lawns in Ontario or similar climates.
Thanks in advance!

Which is the best fertiliser for a overseeded lawn?

On September 25th, I aerated, detached and overseeded my Vancouver lawn using a 90/10 TTTF/KBG mix. In essence, I started with just dirt as the lawn was mostly weeds.

The new seedling are starting to grow at different rates with the tallest shoots reaching 2.5-inches. The lawn is patchy but I plan to mow in about a week.

I had 2 questions:

  1. Should I be applying a fertiliser in November and if so, which is the best one to apply?
  2. If I drove down to the US, is there a better fertiliser available to use?

How to get back before winter ???

New sod laid less than a month ago and recently had first mow. It may have been mowed too low. Is that the cause or other underlying issue. How can I get it back before winter?

Appreciate any help. Total newbie who got it right in the beginning and now messed it up. Location is Ontario and sub 15 temp.

Tempted to purchase from them. Carries a good selection of herbicides post and pre emergent.

Don't want to get scammed but options are limited/nil.

Edit: hoping to get the same as worried_trick_3531 - I'll report back.

Please help identify the problem!

Hi everyone,

I installed the sod at the end of July this year, and everything had been going really well until about 2-3 weeks ago. I started noticing that some of the leaf blades start developing dark brown spot and then eventually yellowing. The overall lawn looks a bit patchy but still green for the most part. The problem is not going away however, or at least not noticeable enough. I have not been watering more than 1-2 times a week for the last 2 weeks trying to see if I accidentally overwatered it, but still unsure. CHAd is sending me in circles and gives me a different diagnosis and solution every time I resend the same picture.

Would appreciate any of the pointers / advice on what to do now and how to deal with this from people here, as someone probably seen similar issue before. I’m located in Hamilton, ON

Thank you in advance!!!!

Grass Lawn looked decent till I mowed it short for the winter... how to improve for next year?

Zone 3a, the lawn was looking good most of the summer until the last month or so where a few dead/dormant patches popped up, which may have been due to the limited range of the sprinkler I set up + window reflection onto the grass.

When I mowed the lawn yesterday, a lot more discoloration showed up. This may be an obvious answer since the nights are cold and winter is coming, but is there anything else going on here? A couple houses on my street still has pristine lawns which makes me wonder if there is anything extra I can do for my lawn next year.

So we moved into our house 3 years ago and I could never get the front part of the front lawn to grow anything other than weeds. I finally had enough and just dug it all up over the Labour Day long weekend, put down some new soil and seed. The results aren’t perfect, but nothing i cant fix in the spring. A solid 8/10 in my books!! Here’s the before, during, and today. A lot of lessons learned from 2 years of trying.
