I like the first one, but what if you sized things down, moved them lower, and let a full third of the canvas be occupied by the sky? I think it would feel more open and less cramped

I personally like the first one, though I would like to see things a bit more fleshed out

You're not going to be able to read either of them clearly as compositions until you get the value structure figured out.
