Question Slow Dutch podcasts for the train?

For listening I've mostly been doing the official mock exams and the luisteren practice on Inburgering.org, which only really works when I'm at home with headphones and nothing else going on. I have about an hour on the train every day that I'd like to use for this, and searching inburgering podcast mostly gives me shows that are way too fast or half in English.

Does anyone know something slow and clear around A2 level that actually helped them before the luisteren exam?

Highly recommend Dutch Today with Martijn! (A2 and B1)

Try Universiteit van Nederland. They also have synced transcripts you can follow.

They go above A2, but are easier to follow than others and the topics are varied so you’re sure to find something interesting. I find the podcasts focused on learning a little too boring.

I like Zeg Het in Het Nederlands. The pace is nice and slow, and the topics are pretty interesting. She only posts occasionally, but there is a good archive.

I listen to Leer Nederlands met podcasts on Spotify. They are very clear and has what feels like a more natural back and forth than alot of podcasts. They also cover a variety of topics, which keeps it more interesting, with podcasts between 10-20 minutes

Literally "Slow Dutch" podcast by Jedutchy! It helped me so much. I'd listen to it while I walked on the treadmill

A slightly different take. There are a lot of great children audiobooks very well narrated. The online bib or storytel for instance will have a lot, where it's built-in to be able to slow down (or up) the speed.

Lampje, krekel, Pluk...

Then of course, there are a lot of adult books well narrated, for which you can slow down the speed as well.

I personally much prefer this option, and I can confirm it has helped me tremendously.

If you don’t mind Flemish Dutch, VRT Max, the Belgian public broadcaster, has loads of good podcasts. I listened to Weetikveel, when I was doing the language course

  1. I would also recommend the Dutch Today podcast (already mentioned), which comes out weekly. Martijn always picks an interesting topic, covering history, art, current events, and personal stories.

The free version alternates between levels A2 and B1. If you join the paid version (on Patreon) you can get it at your chosen level (A2 or B1) every week, along with vocabulary lists and exercises.

  1. Lang Verhaal Kort comes out every weekday with a short (usually around 5 minutes) episode on current events.

  2. Universiteit van Nederland has a great series of podcasts. I'd call it popular science. They're talking to professors about their specialty (fish, money, gender, psychology etc.) and it's aimed at a young adult audience. It's quite accessible.

  3. Not a podcast, but NOS Journaal in Makkelijke Taal is available on YouTube. As the name implies, it's a newscast in very accessible language, with an 8-12 minute episode every weekday.

If you want something not specifically tailored to Dutch learners there is:

Sterrin's Dierenencyclopedie

Feit of Fabel

They are around A2-B2 depending on the episode. Not really very slow, but I'm about A2/B1 and can understand around 80% of it.

I am learning Flemish, which means we have way less educational content available from independent creators, compared to Netherlands. Of course, I always end up finding something interesting for my level in a Dutch accent, which is not my focus right now.

So I just started listening to whatever Flemish podcasts I can find (of course, according to my sphere of interest) and just set the speed to 0.75 or 0.8, depending on the speaker. In Apple Podcasts, you can only do 0.8, while in Spotify, you can choose 0.75 or 0.85 or even slower, which is lovely. And voilà, you get a slow podcast.
