Books Lord of the Rings on BBC Mastermind Quiz

6.5k Upvotes

Not seen this shared yet and thought the community might enjoy it.

The Lord of the Rings books featured as a specialist subject on the long running BBC quiz show Mastermind this week. Surprised it's not a banned topic tbh (they don't allow the most frequently chosen specialist topics for obvious reasons).

Lore House of Edain

All though the Edain didn't have long lifespan like their descendants in Numenor, were they already stronger both physically and in will power compared to ordinary men in the Third Age?

Movies If LOTR was a cozy fire, the Hobbit was a heavy duty flashlight.

• Upvotes

Ok so this might be a bit confusing but it comes down to the way the movies were made. Lord of the Rings was made using a ton of special effects and camera tricks, and didn't use much CGI. The Hobbit was heavy on the CGI, not to mention the camera quality and frame rate was much better. Except that was the problem. The low quality, frame rate, and special effects gave Lord of the Rings a charm that made it feel real. The Hobbit, while it looked much more realistic, it was so realistic that it felt fake. While a heavy duty flashlight might do a better job of lighting up the room, it doesn't give the same vibe as a cozy fire.

Movies BD commentary for first timers?

So i usually do a yearly LOTR marathon in December and my kids watch them with me. Now, this year, i want to do it but with commentary. I know theres like 3 or 4 commentaries on them (its been a while since i’ve seen them with) but which one would be the most entertaining for commentary first timers like my kids? They range from 13- 20 years old. What do you guys recommend?

EVENTS

- With Frodo severely wounded, Strider and the four hobbits travel slowly towards Rivendell.

- Glorfindel finds their trail and follows them over the Last Bridge.

- Gandalf hurries towards Rivendell after the Black Riders attacked him on Weathertop.

- Boromir travels towards Rivendell to ask for counsel.

PASSAGES

BEGINS, pg 203, Flight to the Ford

> The next day the hills rose still higher and

steeper before them, and they were forced to turn away northwards out of their course.

ENDS, pg 204, Flight to the Ford

> He lay down again and passed into an uneasy

dream, in which he walked on the grass in his garden in the Shire, but it seemed faint and dim, less clear than the tall

black shadows that stood looking over the hedge.

HIGHLIGHTS

Frodo had a visionary dream, where he saw Ringwraiths spying on shire. He has been slowly fading to shadow realm, and is getting anxious. Although his wound is closed and he will laugh tomorrow on mirth. Also he could not sleep and was getting paranoid, minor water dripping sounds were creeping him.

Still gotta give it to him that he survived so long.

Art( its similar to the vision frodo sees in his dream so added this) by Michele Rosi

Fan Creations I made Gollom Fan art for Inktober

Originally, I would have made a thin, disgusting creature probably attacking someone innocent, as I had done in previous Inktober prompts. So, to shake things up, I asked myself: are there any noteworthy characters who are gangly-looking? That’s when I came up with the idea of drawing Gollum in his cave with the One Ring.

Question I just watched the movies and I have a few questions. I hope this sub welcomes questions or stupid questions. Thanks if anyone answers them. (Please don't mind my spelling of characters)

  1. So in the Battle of Helm Deep, Gandalf goes to get the troops which the King exiled because he was controlled by Sauruman. But before that we get to see their strength, which was pretty less. So how were they able to defeat that absolute large army of Orcs.

  2. When Ents attacked Saruman area and flooded it. Why didn't Saruman do anything when he is the most powerful wizard? (Gandalf says he is stronger than him) He just watches them attack from his castle.

  3. If Sauron doesn't actually exist and he only exists as the presence in ring, then who is building the ORC army? Who is ordering them to build more troops, ordering them to go to different places to attack and bring the ring.

  4. We rarely see Gandalf use his magic and most of the time he is just using his Shadowfax and his sword to travel and fight. (His major show of magic was when he fought that Red Demon and when he used some light to send away the Dragons attacking men) Why not use his powers, send away the dragon each time etc etc.

  5. Similar to the 1st question, When Rohan brings his army of around 3k soldiers + those dead green riders to Minas Thrias fight the massive war, they win. But the Orc's army was way massive. It had 10k + Orcs, many Catapults, Elephentos and dragons still they lose? Yes, we see them defeating them by throwing stones and taking out the Elephents but it is still not appealing.

Other Wormtongue

So the "worm" in Wormtongue isn't referring to anything like an earthworm. Worm here is another name for a dragon (Germanic origin, wyrm or worm) - and we've already read about a dragon that can speak very well. Plus, earthworms don't have tongues.

Costumes Help on choosing my costume as the ring?

Please ignore my botched Photoshop since I'm in a rush lol

I'm open to feedback as well! If you think something else better would work, I'm all ears. The original outfit I had in mind and preferred unfortunately got back ordered on Etsy, so it won't be here in time for Halloween. Now I'm trying to figure out another outfit.

My boyfriend is going as Frodo, but my idea to identify myself as the ring is to get a 3-4in brass waist belt and paint on the lettering as shown in the photos. I think the first one is cute, but the second one feels more "Lord of the Rings" to me.

Other Fanfiction idea- The Mumakil Scene in ROTK but I replaced the Mumakil with giant theropod dinosaurs

Picture this-

The Rohirrim led by King Theoden and Eomer, along with Eowyn in disguise and Merry, have just finished the charge into the Orc Host.

An overall spectacular cinematic experience. They have just smashed into the orc’s flanks, defying the archers and pikes and are now in the process of routing the army.

There’s a heroic choir moment as the Rohirrim practically smite every orc they see with sword and spear and the orcs are probably wishing they brought more wargs or horses of their own.

Eomer shouts “Drive them to the river.”

Theoden orders- “Make safe the city!”

The panicking Mordor orcs flee with the Rohirrim in pursuit, but the Rohirrim suddenly stop.

Theoden lowers his sword as he spies something off in the distance.

A loud, trumpeting roar echoes off in the distance, accompanied by war chants from a chillingly familiar chorus of voices- the war chants of man.

Thundering footsteps echo in the distance, as through the dust emerge -

The Haradrim, both on foot, and accompanying their towering mounts.

The Rohirrim were anticipating that men in service of Sauron would be present at the fight, but not with such terrifying, imposing behemoths serving as war mounts.

But it’s not the Mumakil they are riding.

Instead, emerging from the dust cloud, with war towers swaying on their hips-

Giant reptilian predators.

Saurian monsters of varying shape and size. Drakes in all aspects save the ability to fly or breathe fire. Bipedal, hulking monstrosities that harken to the days when Glaurung and his ilk bathed the fields of Angband in fire and blood.

Their forelimbs range from small and diminutive to taloned limbs of coiled muscle. Their elephantine limbs are carried by three clawed feet that carve furrows in the earth as they pass.

Their tails sway as counter balances to their primary and most terrifying weapon- building sized heads with jaws lined with curved and powerful fangs. Some have cone shaped teeth like a crocodiles, others thin and bladed like sharks, and others are built like serrated stakes.

Some have spines that jut out like fins from their powerful backs, while others are lined with osteoderms and quills.

Their hawk-like eyes fix upon the diminutive host of mammals on their now panicking mounts. Man-things in tin suits on squealing hoofed vermin. Their leader, astride a gargantuan titan with jaws that could crush a troll’s head and upper body in one bite blows a war horn to signal a charge. Not a call to battle, but a prelude to slaughter.

Theoden blanches, seeing these hulking, bird like reptiles begin to gather speed in their charge. The urge to turn and spur his horse to the safety of Minas Tirtith’s walls is strong.

But then, he thinks on the dreams he has had of late, of being seated in the halls of his forefathers, where he would drink wine and finally stand before them without fear of shame.

The walls will make no difference. The monsters will simply smash the walls down, faster than any device Sauron or the Witch King could hurl against the citadel’s defences.

They had to hold them here. The Rohirrim had to give everything they could to stop these monsters from massacring the entire city and opening the rest of the free world to the onslaught of Sauron and his armies.

“My King!” Eomer calls over to him, his eyes laden with both fear and anticipation. Do they flee or do they fight? Meet their ends now, or later cowering behind their walls.

Theoden nods.

He lifts his sword.

“Reform the line! Reform the line!” If morale breaks now, the day is lost. He had to keep the Rohirrim strong and undaunted.

“Sound the charge!” One of his bannermen answers with a rallying horn.

“Take them head on!”

“Charge!” Theoden roars, and his men answer with bellows of might and pride in their ancestral battle spirit to expel the giddying spell of fear the monsters threaten to place on them.

The Rohirrim charge as one, thundering across the fields of Pelennor.

And a hellish chorus of Sky-splitting roars and primal unearthly screams answer as the army of Saurian predators with the Haradrim mounted on their war towers reach their top speed and open their jaws wide to slam down into the Rohirrim.

And what follows next- only pure chaos and blood drenched carnage.

Question Can any one help me with the elven language? I would love to have a“Welcome to Little Leaf” sign for a dollhouse I’m making.

I’m not sure where to post this. I am making a 1:12 scale treehouse/dollhouse with a Mirkwood feel to it. If anyone can help point me in the right direction I would be so great full. Thanks!
