🙋🏽‍♀️Other Real People or Groups 👨🏼 Authors who put bare minimum in interacting with their audience

(I've put brightest examples everyone can recognize, there are many creators like them)

UTDR and ULTRAKILL communities are infamous for many reasons but that doesn't stop creators like Hakita or Toby Fox to develop their own projects while interacting with their fanbase on very rare occasions, while actually listening to the general critiques on gameplay and making patches as they go with development and occasionaly making posts about how the development goes. The problem with interacting with own audience is that you can put more of a bad image for the entire thing you've made, as it might not be associated with just "bad" fanbase, but also the creator being "bad". This is why, sadly, a lot of people mock on TADC and Hazbin Hotel & Helluva Boss and specficially their creators because both Gooseworx and Vivienne tried to prove something to their own audience, making the backlash only worse. And to be honest, from what I know, Hakita used to flame on random people of his community for saying stupid stuff or suggestions but from what I know now he doesn't do it anymore, which makes me have even more respect on him as an author

It’s one of the reasons I really like when Toby writes his newsletters, because he can upload everything in free formats and explain what he needs to, whilst making sure that people can’t just leave Twitter threads or reaction images under those kinds of important news. They’re very good at forcibly separating his thoughts from forums, meaning we have a lot more time to just read what he’s saying and think about it BEFORE discussing it amongst ourselves.

u/notastersburner Aug 19 '26

thank u for reminding me to subscribe to the newsletter :3

6

u/Kego_Nova Aug 20 '26

I used to think Hakita was mean for stuff like this but after what happened with the TADC fandom and Gooseworx I've changed my mind and think this is actually just the correct way to interact with your fandom

2

u/Eevsgames Aug 21 '26

The only correct way of dealing with your fandom is by treating them with the same amount of respect they treat you

269

u/Dereksmith3107 Aug 19 '26

Other memorable quotes include "If you guys were making this game it would be bad" (paraphrased cuz i dont got the screenshot) and "Nothing is ever confirmed/deconfirmed. It was considered public knowledge that Sisyphus Prime was deconfirmed before he got added."

128

u/ThatNoname-Guy Aug 19 '26

Actually the quote was "It's a good thing you guys aren't designing an ultrakill or otherwise it would suck", which is one of the wisest quotes i've heard about game development alongside Gabe Newell talking about fun and interactivity being the main point of a game, not graphics or story.

23

u/Maned_Cyborg Aug 19 '26

Gabe Newell also talked about realism and how it sucks ass

Which tbh true in most kinds of games, they'd be boring if they stuck as much as possible to reality, and it serves a bit as a reminder that grounded and realistic are not synonyms

10

u/acatohhhhhh Aug 20 '26

Whenever someone tries to bring up realism for game balance I always think back to how even Tarkov takes liberties in their realistic balance because otherwise the balance would be awful. Don’t ask me what makes it fun idk either

5

u/Waruteru Aug 20 '26

A huge part of what makes extraction games like Tarkov is the constant threat of getting absolutely fucked over and lose it all. There's certain thrill to it.

Not my thing but get it. The rest of the balancing is just to make it not suck ass.

2

u/Stunning-Seat3821 Aug 21 '26

mind you, it CAN be fun, it is just not so by default

1

u/Maned_Cyborg Aug 21 '26

Tbh it is highly dependent on a lot of factors, there is no universally fun kind of realism and it frequently has a few fictional elements that don't stick out of place too much.

16

u/HunterOfSpycrabs Aug 19 '26

Keep in mind the context that the people he was referring to wanted sentries to do 75-100% of your hp per shot, with reduced charge times, because otherwise they'd be "too easy"

10

u/ForsakenRoyal24 Aug 19 '26

Ppl often use his quote wrong so the context helps

9

u/Brain_lessV2 Aug 20 '26

Genuinely thinking of how much worse the last room in P-2 would be if that change was implemented.

5

u/Delta_Builder Aug 20 '26

Oh it was about gameplay balance rather than story stuff?

5

u/acatohhhhhh Aug 20 '26

They’re a thorn in your side when you’re dealing with a bunch of things already so you gotta have their beeps in the back of your mind to know when to dodge

1

u/tinyrottedpig Aug 20 '26

Can't think of a time where a sentry isn't a fair threat on the battlefield

2

u/HunterOfSpycrabs Aug 20 '26

Iirc, this screenshot is from right before Wrath got released, and sentries were first introduced, hence the discussion

127

u/Ragebaitmyhealer Aug 19 '26

Imo after chapter 5 going out of its way to show Toriel and sans in a better light and addressing criticism about that from people who read them as having bad behavior in chapter 4, it's clear Toby does read it a lot and is just not engaging outside of likely his own personal accounts.

In addition like... With the ARG responses and the sweepstakes, I think Toby interacts with players more than the average dev but does it very professionally

40

u/tomaxi1284 Aug 19 '26

Dield of hopes and dreams

31

u/klineshrike Aug 19 '26

I mean chapter 5 is also full of easilly missable dialog that is very obviously a response to the fanbase.

Its why i think toby saying he doesnt read theories is fibbing a little bit. He has clearly referenced them indirectly in some jokes.

But its just that he does interact with us. Using his own game. The Mikes are almost entirely a tool to kind of point out he sees things we talk about in a fun an endearing way.

11

u/yui_riku1 Aug 20 '26

he put the "i don't read the theories" just under an image lf pluey, which is, a reference to a theorie

2

u/bigtree2x5 Aug 20 '26

yeah you can really tell he thought the friend inside me jokes were fucking hilarious and he kept referencing it a ton. "doesn't read theories" my ass

16

u/TaxevasionLukasso Aug 19 '26

Also he def has alt accounts he uses. The fanart retweeting incident was def because he forgot to swap to an alt

12

u/_3_and_20_characters Aug 19 '26

he bare minimum observes the fandom silently, im certain hes saying he doesnt so we can't figure out where he frequents, given his private nature

5

u/nekojirumanju Aug 20 '26

absolutely. him seeing andrew hussie interact with homestuck’s fanbase gave him an easily observable crash course in how to try not to say things on main as much as possible

2

u/TaxevasionLukasso Aug 20 '26

That seems suspiciously reasoned. Almost the type of logic that only Toby would follow...

3

u/Blazing_Rain03 Aug 20 '26

He has mentioned an alt account in his famitsu column I think - specifically that he uses it to look at Kris x Susie fanart. It was that or an interview.

6

u/SmartAlecShagoth Aug 19 '26

I feel like drawing attention to even taking feedback is bad. People are so obsessively and desperately parasocial they are begging for slip ups

2

u/Intelligent-Okra350 Aug 20 '26

That isn’t necessarily “oh people took this scene x way so I need to add stuff making it turn out it was y way instead,” I think it’s equally or more likely that it was “I totally wrote this scene to make it look x way only to have next chapter go oh nope it was this actually.”

Especially with the bit that they weren’t actually locked out because Kris knows where the spare key is, I don’t think that’s an attempt to make Toriel look less bad, I think that’s to give us another “Kris you motherfucker” moment because they jabaited us to railroad us to the church.

340

u/Nellie_Tayloe_Ross Aug 19 '26

Team Cherry is so good at this kind of thing. The last time they interacted with the Hollow Knight fanbase was… the riddles?

95

u/Animaloffear56 Aug 19 '26

Still not quite sure why they felt the need to troll the fanbase with the cake thing. I think if Silksong was anything less than what it was, people would have been PISSED

37

u/JustAChickn Aug 19 '26

I mean, that was less a Team Cherry thing and more a William Pellen thing, which hes been doing for quite a while

19

u/Animaloffear56 Aug 19 '26

Is there a second team cherry or something

30

u/JustAChickn Aug 19 '26

I meant that he did it independently from the company, and he had been posting shitpost even before the cake thing, and he still does to this day every couple months

-4

u/Animaloffear56 Aug 19 '26

He's the founder of the team dude

21

u/TaxevasionLukasso Aug 19 '26

Yeah, but it's a team and not everything he does represents the team. He did that himself, with his own accounts.

1

u/Animaloffear56 Aug 19 '26

Man if I ever found a team I'd gonna launder all the shitty dev practices through one guy

10

u/TaxevasionLukasso Aug 20 '26

"shitth dev practices" and it's the funniest thing ever

1

u/JustAChickn Aug 20 '26

Yeah like, it was a big troll through a convoluted puzzle which had convoluted pieces. I was in thr sub during that time and it was fuclong amazing seeing it come down

1

u/Kego_Nova Aug 20 '26

They didn't, actually. The Silksong reveal happened on the exact date people figured out from the "ARG". They just probably got shut down by Nintendo because they wanted to preserve the surprise for the direct.

11

u/not-Kunt-Tulgar Aug 19 '26

I don’t even know if you can count team cherry as bare minimum because that would imply they actually interact with the community.

27

u/casualbo1 Aug 19 '26

There is still a point where even just saying "working today" would have been better than months if not years of silence. I don't want to know what you're implementing in the game, but disappearing off the face of the earth and then using "we were engrossed in making the game" as an excuse doesn't work for me.

31

u/iguanacatgirl Aug 19 '26

Counterpoint: if they didn't go no contact, we wouldn't have gotten silk posting. The world would be a worse place

1

u/Enigma-Vee Aug 20 '26

not really, i think they put LESS than nothing into it

221

u/TheTalkerofThings Aug 19 '26

72

u/themonolith3 Aug 19 '26

context is important for this screenshot cause he was specifically talking to two guys that wanted to make the mindflayers super stronger and tankier

37

u/throwaway2246810 Aug 19 '26

I would never have guessed this was in response to a shitty development suggestion about the game

7

u/themonolith3 Aug 19 '26

last time i saw the ultrakill sub almost every suggestion had at least one comment that was this screenshot because they thought hakita was just being mean for no reason and that that was funny

13

u/madethisforonly1joke Aug 19 '26

I thought it was two people who wanted sentries to deal like 50-75% of your health in one attack on top of having faster charge-up times for said attack

4

u/themonolith3 Aug 19 '26

might have been

9

u/Tom_F_0olery Aug 19 '26

No it’s pretty generally applicable for game development imo

3

u/PvtToaster Aug 19 '26

Thought it was in reference to people mad about the whiplash nerfs?

2

u/Jaded_Prompt1475 Aug 20 '26

oh damn, thought this was also about the even worse idea of the shield arm. he's still right though, any tweak to the damage or health of enemies will make it end up like how bullshit nightmare difficulty is in doom eternal.

1

u/AutisticFun01 Aug 20 '26

The shield arm thig was in a stream if I recall.

1

u/Kego_Nova Aug 20 '26

I thought this was in reply to people complaining about the whiplash arm changes

2

u/Sufficient_Plant8689 Aug 20 '26

Some people misuse this screenshot to deflect genuine critisism and community feedback

1

u/kirbyverano123 Aug 21 '26

I've seen this used against Deltarune theories and most of the time I agree.

62

u/kolleden Aug 19 '26

I dont agree on the wording, having a monthly newsletter is not the "bare minimum", its actually alot of effort from Tobys part, which by and large is the reason he has such good communication with the Deltarune fanbase.

I think authors that do actually make the bare minimum effort are mishandling the situation just like the creators over talking. For example Team Cherry, while they didn't need to talk with their audiance, the fact they went radio silent for all these years is the direct result the fandom got sorta crazy in the first place. And while sure, to Team Cherry might of been a good thing as it built hype that payed off in the end, the lack of any progress indicationn at the end of the day can cause fatigue and burnout to your fans.

25

u/Ornery_Magazine9844 Aug 19 '26 edited Aug 19 '26

People need to realise that there is a middle ground between radio silence and answering every strangers question on social media.

43

u/5ive_Sev7n Aug 19 '26

I think the major discourse of the TADC community would have been solved of Gooseworx gave less fucks about the actual fans

16

u/Creeperslayers6 Aug 20 '26

Honestly, prob could eliminate most of that discourse by time-traveling and stopping Gooseworx from posting the "if yall don't behave, ill ruin the ending" (primed the community toxicity) and "so everyone knows their favorite character isnt get shafted, heres each character spotlight" (set up the expectation that each character was equally important with the exception of pomni as the MC) post.

2

u/Sea-Temporary7380 Aug 20 '26

That post is honestly so misleading it incredible. If she didnt post that vharacters post people would genuinely be more okay with the jax show

31

u/No_Ad_7687 Aug 19 '26

Team cherry

29

u/Exciting-Pen5054 Aug 19 '26

Rob the Top

19

u/Alchametal_87 Aug 19 '26

As a GD fan, no this is too far in the other extreme. Despite the amount of problems with the game and it’s community RobTop never listens and is basically radio silent

2

u/Particular-Long-3849 Aug 21 '26

Buddy's a damn cryptid

26

u/TrueEnder Aug 19 '26

A true Skonger doesn’t need to see Silkpost, knight. They go by pure animal instinct.

20

u/amberi_ne Aug 19 '26 edited Aug 19 '26

It’s way better this way, imo.

Being overly transparent and indulging your fans with out-of-content material, answering lore questions online, explicitly detailing and foreshadowing stuff on Twitter or whatever just kind of caters an aggressively parasocial audience, who spends more time combing your social media presence than engaging with the actual text, and leaves the rest of your audience who only watched/played the damn thing out of the loop.

That’s part of how you get stuff like Gooseworx and TADC

Edit: Ultimately there is a balance to be had though, of course. Complete radio silence under all circumstances (like with TF2 in many cases, or Silksong) is rough. But you don’t need constant status updates and engaging with the audience, an occasional poke and “hey, we’re still working on this!” will suffice

16

u/Intelligent_Carob_52 Aug 19 '26

zun

13

u/Various-Bee-1966 Aug 19 '26

Too plastered to understand half the time anyway

6

u/TheMarkerTool Aug 19 '26

It's always silence, suddenly game gets announced in May and comes out in August. Then more silence and we do it all over again.

2

u/Own_Childhood_7020 Aug 20 '26

And then there is some random ass interview with some bombshell lore drops or worldbuilding that never got revealed anywhere

1

u/TheMarkerTool Aug 20 '26

Yeah the lore drops are usually from the books and then there will be like a one line in the story that implies there's a lot more they left out. Like Ran knowing Yuma

2

u/BizzareMann_2 Aug 20 '26

He's too busy hanging out with Beat Mario

15

u/Thin-Student-5036 Aug 19 '26

Hakita is lowkey playing 4D chess because most of his fan interactions consists of him saying pure bullshit in discord

14

u/Thumb_Wrasslin Aug 19 '26

1

u/yusufik Aug 21 '26

THERE IS NOTHING LEFT

31

u/Huckleberry-9477 Aug 19 '26

11

u/AntComfortable5970 Aug 19 '26

Good example I think we only had a handful of pics of him for years

8

u/Better-Knee-3113 Aug 19 '26

Hakita is a hater and I love him for it

2

u/themonolith3 Aug 19 '26

no hes not

5

u/SomeRandomGuy2763 Aug 19 '26

Ask him his opinion on V2's ressurection

3

u/AutisticFun01 Aug 20 '26

There's like 20 different instances of him replying with some variation of "suck my nuts" to fans that annoy him on discord, dude does not give a shit.

17

u/Imaginary_Owl_979 Aug 19 '26

The lesson of TADC is that interacting with your fandom at all, especially if it skews young, opens the door for a lot of parasocial horseshit. Let the work stand on its own and run far away afterwards.

2

u/Alchametal_87 Aug 19 '26

Maybe if people would be less parasocial idiots creators could fucking have fun with their own fans but ig not

1

u/Ok_Bet_7073 Aug 20 '26

Hi,I am sorry for asking this but what exactly happened between goosework and the fandom? I dont know much about it, can you explain it? I dont mind if it is a long explanation

1

u/Anon-Y-Mous6 Aug 20 '26

As far as I can remember,

  1. Gooseworx at some point said “All characters will have equal attention” (paraphrasing) which a lot of people took to mean having equal IMPORTANCE in a narrative, which cause a lot of friction in the fandom. People were already parasocial with the show prior, but that statement solidified a weird “my favorite character requires just as much screentime as all the others” opinion in a very vocal minority.

  2. Because of this weird parasocial situation, yhat same vocal minority believed that whatever their theory or headcanon was, was the correct one, no matter where the narrative was going. Gooseworx kinda responded by saying “You guys make theories based on what’s most surprising not based on what the story and themes are” (again, heavily paraphrasing)

  3. There were some onsie twosie controversies regarding Glitch itself, the Movie aspect, and a couple old things that happened with the VAs that were blown out of pre-portion by a lot, and people blamed Gooseworx specifically for it, cause she’s the creator.

I could be totally wrong on some of these, this is off my memory.

7

u/Boring_Name06 Aug 19 '26

If I ever actually publish a popular work to the internet I know my ass will not be able to fend off the urge to interact with the fandom. There is no way I won’t be able to yell at someone who’s completely misunderstanding the themes and such. Mad respect for Tricky Toby ‘Radiation’ Fox

7

u/Cheddar-Jester Aug 19 '26

Hakita disconfirms fan theories regarding his game's lore while it's in development. So, I dunno if he really counts.

3

u/AutisticFun01 Aug 20 '26

To be fair he only does that with incredibly outlandish theories, like when someone suggested V1 may have singlehandedly killed humanity.

5

u/Juggernautical909 Aug 19 '26

Fujimoto rarely acknowledges chainsaw man in favor of posting about random shit like movies he’s watched and if a fan met him irl there’s a 60% chance he’s dying on the spot

4

u/Tom_F_0olery Aug 19 '26

I also think its funny how people try to attribute this to the idea that Toby hates his fans when he’s basically constantly expressing his love for the fandom. His newsletters constantly express this (his latest one pretty much said that while he doesn’t read them, he loves and wants people making theories as this is basically the only time they can be created), he has a trio of characters in Deltarune that basically act as a tribute to the fandom, and his 10th anniversary stream’s main message was “create fan content, your ideas matter no less than mine”

4

u/Makuta_td665 Aug 19 '26

The author of “I can’t sleep “ they never interacted with the audience and we know nothing about the author

3

u/Valuable_Pear9654 Aug 20 '26

It seems nobody has commented the turtle man himself yet.

Vedal987!

3

u/TheGhostGuyMan Aug 19 '26

Christopher Nolan doesn’t really do interviews unless a film of his is releasing. I don’t know if that counts but whatever.

3

u/_IOME Aug 19 '26

The GOATS of just not saying shit for years and then releasing PEAK once they feel like it.

3

u/DeadlyDerp11707 Aug 20 '26

I think Liam Vickers fits this pretty well. Interactions from him with the community were pretty rare to come by. Especially now since he left his own discord server lol

2

u/dulledegde Aug 20 '26

be greatful im not a popular indie dev becuase i would be fucking with you guys constantly no trailers no teases im releaseing a content update at exactly 9am on a Monday. i would do a most popular charcter poll then kill them off via random off-screen meteor strike.

2

u/derpymooshroom6 Aug 20 '26

One thing that lives rent free in my head is that I remember Hakita was asked about adding a shield to Ultrakill and they just started ranting about how its would just be a worse parry and that the person who said that needs to get good or something along those lines and I just find that really funny and in that I find it relatable

2

u/ThatNoname-Guy Aug 20 '26

The game simply stops being fun once you give players easy options to play and Hakita was right on lashing out on that guy

1

u/igetmalespregnant Aug 19 '26

What did vivziepop and gooseworks do?

9

u/TacticalKitsune Aug 19 '26

Most being overly interactive with their community which got them an indiebillion amount of harassment

1

u/christpuncher_69 Aug 19 '26

I mean I can't blame them, have you seen people on the internet? Doubly, triply so when they're weebs.

1

u/Autumm_550 Aug 19 '26

The exact opposite is Gooseworks

1

u/satirelion im literally just a lion Aug 19 '26

Had a dream that these two worked together to make the greatest piece of music ever in the world, only to ever use it in their gay sax video

1

u/Zistr0 Aug 19 '26

i can't blame em if i was mainstream I'd do the same damn thing 😭

1

u/RaulRpg1 Aug 19 '26

Most mangaka fit this tbh lol

1

u/Sufficient_Plant8689 Aug 20 '26

The problem isnt interacting with your audience at all. I think its simply acting like you can control and regulate them

(Toby and hakita dont really do that but you get my point)

1

u/IAmBasilFromOmori Aug 20 '26

THATS THE PERSON WHO REVIEWED EVERY BULL OF HEAVEN ALBUM ON RYM

1

u/AngriestSlayer Aug 20 '26

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. My dream music collab is between these two. Unfortunately this will never happen because it it did the music would be so good it would destroy our universe

1

u/Awesome-Guy-425 Aug 20 '26

Alan Moore basically REFUSES to talk to fans so I think he should count

1

u/-non-existance- Aug 20 '26

looks at Vivziepop and Gooseworx getting crucified by their fandoms for tiny bullshit

Y'know what? Minimal interaction is probably for the best.

1

u/scarrabocio Aug 20 '26

Vs the opposite : artists who shouldn't had in any way interacted with their communities

Gooseworx, who wouldn't hate her creation if she stayed offline for at least most of the show run

1

u/arcadeler Aug 20 '26

the kings (and queen) of this

THEY ARE STILL DOING IT WITH SEA OF SORROW

1

u/Bioth28 Aug 20 '26

I’m like 90% sure Hakita just genuinely hates his fans

That or it’s sarcastic affection towards them, I can’t tell

1

u/slyathar Aug 20 '26

Kikiyama the creator of Yume Nikki has had such little contact with their fans that people were worried they had passed away. They are just a very private person and have done 1 very simple interview ever. They were interviewed by Toby Fox.

1

u/bigtree2x5 Aug 20 '26

you can kinda tell when someone posts on here and only interacts with media very popular in a certain niche space of the internet. most creators of everything dont speak to their fanbase at all, ever. these guys are actually far above average on the amount they talk or interact with their own communities.

1

u/Jblitz200 Aug 20 '26

Team cherry

1

u/orangeherbtea Aug 23 '26

BeyoncĂŠ. She hasnt talked to us in YEARS outside of her tour

1

u/hibreak Aug 25 '26

I think Toby and the Undertale team sort of do too much as far with this whole "game to be explored inside and out" thing. I mean, it has to super tiring for the coders and the team knowing that people will check every part of the code you write, comment and potential left over file

1

u/Mecchachameleonnn 25d ago

it’s. Because when Toby says anything fandom freaks out

-2

u/soymuytontoxp Aug 19 '26

A Toby Fox le conviene viendo como se puso con los latinos

15

u/Floofyboi123 Aug 19 '26

Bro just said "im gonna wait till all chapters are done but feel free to make a translation yourself" and people acted like he called for a genocide

8

u/Animaloffear56 Aug 19 '26 edited Aug 19 '26

It's funny how choosing to take the work to translate the Japanese version directly led to people shitting on him, whereas if he didn't translate anything no one would even think about it. I wonder if this type of phenomenon has a name, where doing some things but not all things gets you more hate than doing nothing at all

8

u/Floofyboi123 Aug 19 '26

But that reason was also dumb. His reasoning for the lack of translations is to make sure his intentions dont get accidentally lost in translation.

He speaks English and Japanese so its much much easier for him to quality check those than a language he doesn't know

Bro unironically got called racist for being bilingual.

4

u/MLG_Waifu Aug 19 '26

It’s his vision and such

0

u/ler0v Aug 19 '26

wait authors really just ghost their own readers now

1

u/AutisticFun01 Aug 20 '26

I mean once something gets big enough you can't really reply to the hundreds of comments under every OST, tweet and trailer that you post. People also het very parasocial with solo devs.
