Yes, but also more insidiously, to do PR for various causes.
Most obviously is the genre of post that goes: "This [ultra wealthy person] spent [relatively small amount of their wealth] to purchase [a few] acres of land for [basic environmental conservation]." The comments of those posts are inevitably something like "this is the kind of billionaire we need".
Yes, exactly, but if you could make a bot farm that can do a hundred in a day, then you could scale your business of selling accounts much more. People who buy the accounts don't just want one. They want entire armies they can send out to spread whatever advertisement or political message they want.
