Its to do with safety. It safety this way because the round is only in front of the firing pin when the gun is firing. Shame it exploded during its first trial

How the hell does it feed? There's barely any space behind the magazine.
39
25
u/Madman_Salvo 9d ago
Maybe in reverse? So the rounds are pulled into place by something that hooks behind them, rather than a rod that pushes them into place?
7
u/Attrexius 9d ago
Yep, it's this. Here's a video of how it works.
It also extracts spent brass via a tube that goes above the barrel, sorta similar to FN2000 - and it's rather surprising to me that there's two entire guns using this idea.

Yeah it was meant for helicopters iirc

Why helicopters specifically

Shoulder mounting probably made it easier to aim upwards
As for why you'd use it instead of MANPADS my only guess is that because a .50 BMG round is cheaper
57
u/LightningFerret04 9d ago
Absolutely-massively cheaper, much easier to handle and transport and logistically really easy to source
Disadvantages, they’re unguided, have less range and have much less stopping power

Shoulder mounting makes it easier to aim unbraced in general. Lot of heft to hold out in front of you otherwise.

I love how when it came to COD the new standard of fictionalization completely changed the loading mechanism to a side loader like the PDW-57 from BO2 and crazy of all is that it’s somehow more sensible than the norm of what Keltec does

More seriously what am I looking at here? Seems AR-ish. That just a wacky-ass AR pistol?

It was so weird and futuristic that they decided to feature it as the main gun in Stargate SG-1.
13
u/UncleIrohsTeaPot 9d ago
That’s part of it, the other part is that the MP5s that they started the show with had the practical problem of slinging hot brass from the blanks around the set, and the P90 ejects spent brass downward, mitigating that issue.
8
u/IrateWolfe 9d ago
I just learned recently that it's inclusion in Stargate led to an international incident. They didn't produce blanks in that caliber, so the show had to purchase live ammo for conversion, and they bought up so much that the US military ran short and had to reach out to SciFi (A Canadian company) to ask them to stop, and SciFi refused

I love the G11 so much, she is beautiful. Elegant. Kinda shit, but that's because works of art don't belong on a battlefield.

Interesting design how often did it accidentally fire the other rounds
6
u/DAN_MASTER101 9d ago
I have to guess that it happened a lot since it's very old, it was in mid 1700 and chain fire happened a LOTS

It's a true semi automatic, barbell is on the bottom, open top cylinder bed, can shot "single action" with special/variant ammo, had a shit top of barrel lengths, longest being 18in, and much more

Gotta love the Tactical Tuna. Inspiration for Halo's MA5 assault rifle too.
11
u/Gordon_freeman_real 9d ago
Nope actually, the Halo Assault Rifle was already designed before the public got a look at the f2000, it was purely a coincidence
