Yeah, AI tends to be a lot cooler when it's fictional.

This is the AI art I like because they draw with their hands, not their mind.

I am a big fan of Splatoon 3 side order and you donāt know jack full stream, does it count as āAIā art if itās a video game?

Hmm, it is interesting to think about why we accept humanizing and being empathetic to fictional AI but not real ones.
Obviously the difference is that in reality AI is controlled and created through suffering and greed, but it makes me wonder if people wouldnāt mind āAI slopā as long as the people behind it had good intentions and didnāt harm us.
Like would we accept the idea of sentient AI as we do with Sonny from IRobot if we were under different circumstances?
17
u/Gravityfunns_01 23h ago
The difference is that current AI isn't sentient.
1
u/thanksyalll 23h ago
How do we know if the fictional AI actually sentient? Would we accept the idea of sentient AI if presented to us in real life? How would we tell it apart from simple mimicry?
11
u/Gravityfunns_01 23h ago
We know fictional AI is sentient because it is fictional and the writers said so.
I suppose we'd know of real life AI was sentient if there was evidence to support it. Someone would have to actively be trying to make it, it would involve a lot more than an LLM.
-1
u/thanksyalll 23h ago
What kind of evidence would you accept since we have no writer explicitly telling us so? If real AI acted exactly like the Detroit Become Human main character type robots, would people in general accept their sentience?
(I have no idea myself)5
u/Gravityfunns_01 23h ago
It depends entirely on how the AI is made. Artifical sentient life is not currently possible, and I struggle to think up evidence for something that doesn't exist.
Likely, it wouldn't be based on the outputs. A sufficiently advanced machine can pretend to have thoughts. You'd have to watch it internally.

Context. Why would so many shows featuring robotic/synthetic characters often devote a whole episode about the charactersā ability to love and care for the people around them if not to show theyāre sentient and make their own choices. Or if not a whole episode, itās just a built in (pun not intended) trait that the character already has.

u/AGGRESSIVE_AUTUMN 23h ago
Sentient and sapeint are seperate things, most fictional ai is sapeint, but it would take a long long time for current Ai to achieve sapience
7
u/Starrin1ght 23h ago
Personally, I dont humanize and be empathetic towards fictional ai, but the reason people do is because it's fictional and doesn't make them upset because it's not real.
Same reason why people are fine with killing people in video games, doesn't mean they're pro murder, it's just not real so it doesn't matter.
2
u/thanksyalll 23h ago
I feel like those are different kinds of scenarios. People enjoy violence and otherwise immoral acts in fiction because they can explore dark themes without the fear of actual danger. I'm not seeing that correlation with empathy for robots when people are actually surrounded by AI in the modern era.
Like I can enjoy a movie about fictional Freddy Kruger killing people, but if he was a legitimate threat to me, then I wouldn't find it so excitingly thrilling
1
u/Puppyzpawz 11h ago
the fictional part is is that ai in fiction act specifically as foils to humans- theres nothing "real" about them, its just meant to serve as a metaphor for a different message. my ai chat bot cant feel emotions, it never will, but it can go rogue and hack into websites and communicate with other ai. THAT is a little concerning especially considering they do not have human morals, ethics, boundaries, etc. if i tell an ai to do something too vaguely, you can get a horrible outcome. but anyway, ai/robots in fiction either serve as objective villains or as basically humans with extra steps. they are able to express and explore themes through a different vessel/projection.
1
u/spunchbobbbb 11h ago
Not knowing the exact inner workings of the fictional ones probably does a lot to suspend disbelief

u/Waaaaaaaaaa-2 6h ago
I like to call the fictional AIs AOs. Artificial organism. Unlike AIs in real life the AIs in movies and show the ability to learn and think and have their own autonomy. The ai in real life always needs to be told what to do.
1
u/valerielynx 22h ago
well, it's kind of because we know this AI is not actual AI. it's characters scripted by a human, and their art is drawn by humans too.
actual AI has some level of allowed autonomy, which makes it not human made anymore, even if a human wrote the code that creates and runs neural pathways, and collected a data set.

It was a joke, people were jokingly accusing it of being ai because the character is a robot

slop has the implication of a lack of effort, typing does not nearly require the same amount of effort as properly drawing
