Scheduled Thread Weekend Free Discussion Thread

Normally, all posts in this subreddit need to be both Magic-related and at least somewhat "high effort". This weekly thread gives you the chance to relax and talk with your fellow Magic redditors about things that would normally go against those rules.

Want to share a funny story about a recent game of Magic you had, or post a picture of the cool cards you opened in your latest booster? Want to talk about your favorite movie or tv show, or share a personal accomplishment? This is the place to do so.

Keep in mind that the *only* subreddit rules that you can ignore in this thread are rule 2 (all posts must be Magic-related) and rule 7 (no low effort posts that are just pictures of cards). Just because this thread is meant for open discussion does not mean you are allowed to insult people or post explicit content, for example.

I tried really hard last night to cook up a Kwia deck in Pioneer but it felt impossible to achieve both the lifegain and ramp required to cast a 6 drop in a format where you can die pretty early + eat efficient removal. The idea was it's a Selesnya deck, but uses the Lotus tokens for red mana to cast a massive Crackle with Power, hence Pioneer (otherwise it actually would've been a standard deck). So I took a little turn.

Instead of leaning towards Kwia, I decided that [[Aerid Krostrari]] might actually be the better option. Big beater if things don't pan out. I get the ramp if he resolves and I get even more ramp if they remove him. Only two colors rather than potentially splashing for Naya. But the reality is it's basically mono-green: it's all gruul Duals, every permanent has green pips only (except for the one red in Aerid), so it actually runs Nykthos and Kiora as well. In testing, I've dropped a lethal Crackle with Power on turn 4.

But really all this testing has shown me is that Badgermole Cub is a messed up magic card. I know, shocking. It feels kinda in line with Wilderness Reclamation. It costs less and comes out early, in exchange for being less durable and having diminished returns as the game goes on. But man its explosiveness feels so unreal and the fact that even if they kill it, it leaves behind essentially a Persist 2/2 with haste is ridiculous. I wonder if BMC exactly the same but for 4 mana would still see play because I feel like that's a more fair version of it. In grand scheme of magic, not that busted, but for something printed in the last 5 years, it feels up there.

When Star Trek was first announced, I was pretty meh about it, even though I grew up a huge Trek fan and love UB sets in general. However, the closer it gets to release, the more excited I find myself getting.

I originally planned to do maybe a prerelease and that’s it. Now I’m thinking multiple prereleases, maybe a couple drafts, playing commander nights to win more packs, and even buying the Borg precon.

Anyone else unexpectedly optimistic?

I went to my second draft night ever and had the worst interaction with one of my opponents there that really soured the whole experience for me. My opponent was condescending the entire time, mocked every move I made, and was generally an a-hole. I’ve tried five game stores at this point, and I meet someone like this at every store OR the body odor from patrons is genuinely so offensive I can’t feel comfortable playing in them. I wish I could figure out how to meet cool, normal people to play with. Thanks for listening.

Yeah I feel you. I have a store that I like, and about 80% of the people are great. But once per night, I'll meet some asshole. Or worse, a cheater. Which is truly pathetic. I've found that once you meet some people you like, just make a group with them and stick with them. It's better than rolling the dice on just running into some jerk and being stuck spending 90 minutes with them.

I had my friends over for commander last week and we had a funny game. Without anyone mulliganing, one player started with Sol Ring, two players (including myself) started with Sol Ring and Arcane Signet. I played my 5-mana commander, [[Yennett]], on turn 2. On turn 3 I nearly randomly flipped out [[Varragoth]]. On turn 4 I tutored up and flipped [[Breach the Multiverse]]. On turn 5, i tutored up and flipped [[Mnemonic Deluge]], targeting Breach the Multiverse, so I cast it 3 more times.

I was looking at the end of the breach and I was like "man that was kind of a bad Breach 3x, I just got some 2/2s....OH I FORGOT TO DO MY OWN DECK" and I breached myself. Hit [[Void Winnower]], [[Valgavoth]], and [[Jace the Mind Sculptor]]. Everyone conceded lol. Game was maybe 15 mins.

As an aside, I want to build a superfriends EDH deck. I'm torn between Atraxa, Sisay, and the new Tam. The new Tam just seems too pushed and easy, which kinda turns me off of her, and I'd rather do Atraxa, but I really would like red in the identity. I feel like if i go with Sisay, it'll be clunky as I try to manage a bunch of moving parts with Sisay's power, the WUBRG mana, etc. I'd also be aiming for B3 and I feel like Sisay is too strong for B3, just from the power of her tutor.

I played [[Renet, Temporal Apprentice]] after a massive 14 creature [[Bringer of the last gift]] trigger in a bo3 ranked standard match the other day.

I love playing my azorius prison deck with a toolbox sideboard. It gets so hilarious

Pulled a borderless Sheoldred from a random Dominaria United pack at my LGS last night and nobody was around to see it, just me and the store cat staring at each other like we both knew what just happened

Been tracking my pulls in a spreadsheet for like two years now and this one bumped the value of the box into the green for the first time in months, feels good to finally beat the odds for once

Anyway what's everyone brewing this weekend, I'm trying to make a janky Grixis artifacts thing work and it's probably gonna be terrible

trying to think of a superfriends deck. I was mainly thinking Atraxa, Sisay, or Tam the Possibility, but there are downsides to each one for basically "suffering from success" reasons. Like they're too easy/powerful.

I'm considering Pramikon as another option.

My Grixis artifact commander is [[Ashnod the Uncaring]] if you need a new direction

Brewing up a few Decks. UW Heliod Wheels and Mono Black Sephiroth aristocrats commander decks mostly.
