Chicken making a mess of organic waste bags!
Hi everyone,
I live in an apartment block, and we have been having an ongoing problem with multiple chicken coming in front of our building and making a complete mess of the organic waste bags when they are put out for collection.
They tear the bags open, scatter the food waste everywhere, and leave the area filthy. It has become a recurring problem, and it is frustrating because the mess is left for residents to deal with.
We have already tried contacting the Local Council, the relevant local authorities, the Police and the Sanitary Department, but unfortunately, nothing has been done so far to address the problem, which has been going on for years.
I wanted to ask whether this is just an issue in our area or whether other people around Malta are experiencing the same problem.
More importantly, has anyone found a practical solution to prevent chicken from tearing open organic waste bags? Perhaps a homemade solution, or some other method that has worked for you?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as we are running out of ideas and would really like to find a solution to this ongoing problem.
Thanks you.

A way to mitigate the problem, apart from having a proper waste disposal system, is to put the trash bags on hooks elevated from the floor. Saw it in a few places and the chickens won't be able to reach them.

That can be a solution, although I was told that as such one is not allowed to install structures/hooks on the public pavement.

Maybe a plastic bin with a lid? Or some sort of shelving placed out of reach? I’ve seen some people hanging them on a nail, but I guess it depends how heavy the load is before the bag breaks.

A plastic bin with a lid, who though of that? I'm sure that would be an innovative solution for every other European countries

If it's not cats, it's chickens now 🤦🏻♀️ I can't understand how we suddenly have so many chickens running around everywhere.

Hey neighbour!
I dont see anything changing.
People burn plastic trash down the road. I reported it but nothing happened.
The guys lighting fireworks across the street were causing a fire every other day this summer.
Nothing you can do about it.

And why are these animals there in the first place? Some of you are mentioning cats. It’s because they’ve been dumped by selfish humans who would’ve had enough of them, so, like garbage, threw them out. Stop blaming the animals, it’s not their fault they’re there rummaging through rubbish, blame humans!

Hang the bag up or use a bin with a lid.
Put some chicken feed out for the poor chickens. 🐓 🐓
Idk why bins for trash are not required. It’s disgusting putting trash on pavement.

Wild chickens are a serious environmental concern, they need to be reported and removed, there are specialists who will do just this.

Only in Malta 🤣. I remember living in Marsaskala. There was a line of villas between our apartment and the sea and some dude walked with a horse early morning, someone had chicken in their villa's garden and we heard a rooster every morning...

Not even in the 80s. But hey, "progress".

I think the main reason is cats
Rummaging for food, main culprits people putting bags out at night for next day collecting,

7 years in my locality trying to get a dog bin installed by the council. 7 years. 7 years of everyoines dogs shitting all over the street while i take my dogs shit 200000km away. no one gives a fuck.
this island is one big pile of shit and nothing is going to change, that is the reality.
