I'm from Florida. I knew a lot of people who threw all white parties. They did it with pride (we can joke about that word) and a specific flag. This is the first time I have ever heard about a party by that name being about clothing. And to clarify, I am not being sarcastic, humorous, or even using hyperbole. It was a regular occurrence.

Black tie is actually a tuxedo suit. A black tie event the second highest form of formal wear event after white tie, which are very rare nowadays.
White tie events usually are reserved for events with monarchs on state visits, or old world ambassadors being received.
The order of formality goes:
White tie (Morning suit) Black tie (Tuxedo suit) Business casual (Business suit) Casual
You're not supposed to wear a business casual suit at a black tie event, but standards have slipped so much few people care.
