Article 'Black Panther 3': David Jonsson to Play T'Challa II
https://deadline.com/2026/07/black-panther-3-marvel-comic-con-1237003635/1.2k
u/Gorotheninja Jul 26 '26
So...how far of a time jump is it gonna be from 2 to 3?
Because T'challa's son looked pretty young in that post credits scene.
784
u/Sklain Jul 26 '26
Maybe they'll do a big time jump between Doomsday and Secret Wars or the new timeline after Secret Wars just happens to take place in the furure
404
u/Asclepius-Rod Jul 26 '26
Or just don’t mention it honestly
83
u/skancerous Jul 26 '26
Hey remember Hulk's son?
51
u/Asclepius-Rod Jul 26 '26
lol what are the odds we ever hear from him again?

Was that confirmed to be an attempt by filmmakers to explain the actor swap?
Or just a line a the movie needed that happen to also coincidentally joke about the actor swap?

"So the children learned how to function as a society, and eventually they were rescued by, oh, let's say... Moe."
30
u/Kieran-Kiera Jul 26 '26
Letitia Wright was on stage with him, meaning she’ll likely still play a large role (possibly even sharing the Black Panther mantle with T’Challa II), so I don’t think it’ll be in the future. It’s more likely that the soft reset after Secret Wars will age him up
4
u/Alone_Consideration6 Jul 26 '26
That will cause confusion to the audience. He is slightly older than her.
→ More replies (1)5
u/SeanWonder Jul 26 '26
To be honest she might die in Doomsday anyway. Who knows. Not like she HAS to be in BP3 simply because she was on stage when they announced David

Franklin literally creates the universe from scratch. The laws of time go completely out of the window.
22
8
u/GorillaWolf2099 Jul 26 '26
Maybe Avengers: Doomsday's Doom will create an incursion where he just gets aged up in the main universe due to the effects, kind of like what happened to and he stays stuck like that permanently.
3
→ More replies (5)3
u/sanddragon939 Jul 26 '26
Or he just gets aged up due to being in a timeline/dimension/realm where time moves differently.
55
26
u/decoded1 Jul 26 '26
I don’t even think they need a time jump. The rules in the new universe can be whatever they want.
15
u/lern2swim Jul 26 '26
Likely doesn't matter becssue there's going to be some amount of reset after Secret War, so the timeline is probably just going to be reconfigured for everything to fit.
22
u/kirblar Jul 26 '26
In the secret war concept art leak - He's a young adult, so on the Battleworld merge he got aged up
41
4
u/Legendver2 Jul 26 '26
We're talking about a universe with multiverses and time travel. I dont think a time jump is even absolutely necessary haha
4
u/bergamote_soleil Jul 26 '26
I've never seen anything this guy has been in, but just from pictures of him, he has such a baby face that I was shocked to learn he is actually 32 years old, because he could definitely pass for a teenager. So maybe not THAT big of a time jump.
11
u/Billy_King Jul 26 '26
David Jonsson is currently 32yo lol. Granted he looks 10 years younger than he actually is
3
4
u/bigchicago04 Jul 26 '26
Well this movie is at least 3 years out. So 8 + however old that kid was, he’d be in his late teens.

Didn’t they age up Cassie when they made Quantumania? They probably will do the same thing here
E: I remember the time skip but Ant Man is one of my least watched marvel movies so I couldn’t remember if they aged her as well even with the time skip. My b guys

u/your_mind_aches Agent of F.I.T.Z. Jul 26 '26
No they didn't. Cassie Lang was always born around 2008 (which is when Abby Ryder Forston was born) and Quantumania took place in 2025. Two years after Endgame. She would have been 17 there. No retcon needed. Kathryn Newton was just playing a bit younger than her real age.

u/Choco-waffler Jul 26 '26
I don't think we're talking a time jump. Where the films seem to be going in correlation with the source material is Franklin Richards will end up creating a new reality. So he'll most likely be an alternate reality Tchalla to the original MCU version. Think of it as MCU 2.0, they're all getting changed.

My favorite part of that movie is the final 15 minutes, that solidified Rain as my favorite character of the movie. But for the rest of the runtime before that, Andy clears for sure. Amazing character and excellent performance.

204
u/NinduTheWise Jul 26 '26
so i assume at the end of secret wars or during it tchallas son gets aged up
80
u/SentinelATL Jul 26 '26
Maybe a timeskip altogether
37
u/NinduTheWise Jul 26 '26
that'd be a hell of a time jump
35
u/SentinelATL Jul 26 '26
Has to be post secret wars. That’s the only way it makes sense. We have to wait sigh
8
u/sanddragon939 Jul 26 '26
There's no way it's just a time jump for the whole universe. I don't see future MCU movies being set in the late 2030's.

Time skip in the future. All the plucky young carbon copy side kicks are aged up to take on the mantles of the heroes. Starks daughter, morgan, is recast with RDJ in a wig stepping in to become the iron lass

u/the-magnetic-rose Jul 26 '26
He was mesmerizing in Romulus. The way he was able to go from timid and gentle to cold and calculating was phenomenal. This is actually fantastic casting.

Oh he KILLED it in The Long Walk, what a phenomenal actor. Especially with his scene when he was talking to Ray about life. Well deserved role.

I watched it a week ago and it was my introduction to him. He was so good and I wanted him to get more parts. This is tremendous news.

u/DivinityPen Jul 26 '26
Yeah, her getting to be Black Panther kinda felt like she was being rewarded for her foul behavior. I would've preferred them to actually make M'Baku the new Black Panther (or even figure out a way to retool his Man-Ape persona in a heroic fashion, but also pick out a new name that wasn't as... problematic), but David Jonsson as T'Challa II is equally great.
28
u/TakoGoji Jul 26 '26
Lost all potential respect for her because she refused to do the bare minimum during covid to help keep the set safe. Plus she's just not a good actress. No charisma whatsoever.
→ More replies (1)12
u/GuiltyEidolon Weekly Wongers Jul 26 '26
M'Baku couldn't be the Black Panther. He doesn't worship Bast. It's a whole Thing, and why his tribe does their own thing. I don't like Shuri, but I'd rather have Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o) over M'Baku.
2
u/2-2Distracted Jul 26 '26
Nakia is a war dog tho (even though she does worship Bast) both her and M'Baku are pretty much bad picks since they are from different clans with different focuses. I guess I COULD see Nakia have Shuri's plot/character arc in BP2 but the fact that you can essentially just replace one with the other will reflect badly on the characters in question. I'm glad that they kept the plot of BP2 within the Golden Tribe, if nothing else maybe Queen Ramonda should have gotten it.
4
u/spicyorangedragon Jul 26 '26
She's a decent actor, but never had the charisma or ability to carry an entire franchise like Black Panther. David Jonsson is a much stronger choice. I don't think there's much interest in another Letitia Wright-led Black Panther film, and there would probably be significant box office decline if there was one.
I'm now MUCH more interested in the next Black Panther film now that Jonsson is the lead.
3
u/SeanWonder Jul 26 '26
Oh absolutely. Spot on. Not to forget that Denzel is already signed on too. BP3 is already shaping up to be a lot better than 2
22
u/fistulaspume Jul 26 '26
She shall now be referred to as Auntie and will reprise her role as tech or become a villain. Or a savior. Idk
14
u/itsevilR Nebula Jul 26 '26
I’m more concerned about Lupita playing his mother like she’s not that old for that 😭

Who knows? 3 spider-men, 2 caps… could be 2 panthers
11
u/ZoombieXVI Jul 26 '26
That was pretty much the situation in the comics during the buildup to Secret Wars. Both of them were BP, Shuri was the ruling queen of Wakanda, T'Challa iirc ended up as Wakanda's king of the dead (while also running around with the Illuminati)

OHHHH this is a good pick. Yeah, rent Alien Romulus if you haven't seen it. David's performance as Andy reminded me of Ed Norton in "Primal Fear". Same talent at playing the lion and the lamb in one. (Aren't they supposed to be doing a sequel to Romulus with the survivors from the first film? I wanted to see what happens next!)

u/Razatiger Jul 26 '26
I am pretty disappointed as well, I just feel like Damson had the perfect size and Charisma for the role. Not that I don't think David has the Charisma, I just don't think he has the stature.
25
u/ositola Jul 26 '26
Gotta tren hard
20
u/Razatiger Jul 26 '26
Hes like 5'9, I know Marvel can work some Magic, but Idris is like 6'1 and has that regal look.
29
u/ositola Jul 26 '26
They've been making tom cruise look normal height for decades, he'll be fine
And Tchalla II wasn't raised as royalty in this universe anyway
7
u/mikesh8rp Daredevil Jul 26 '26
If anything, having him be more physically distinct is probably a good thing for storytelling , rather than just feeling like a more direct copy.

Look nobody can replace Boseman... But holy shit Jonsson is probably the next best thing.
I really hope he can get out from the massive shadow hanging over Black Panther as a film franchise and shine because he's so talented

Just saw the Long Walk and this guy has the acting chops. Awesome addition!

u/N8CCRG Ghost Jul 26 '26
I didn't have any particular need for T'Challa II any time soon.
David Jonsson has changed that. Now I need this.
3
u/Abeedo-Alone Jul 26 '26
He was great in Rye Lane and Wasteman. Looking forward to seeing what he can do.
3
u/AlmightyLoaf54 Jul 26 '26
This is an incredible choice. Amazing actor, and I know that Chadwick is looking down, feeling extremely happy that this guy is now the BP!!!
3
u/carymb Jul 26 '26
Anybody got their guess on how the character ages up? Time travel, magic, Shuri accidentally doses him with some tech to 'save his life'? Wondering if it's going to be a Cable situation, and he comes back in time to save Wakanda or something... Because the character would be like 10, right? Comics never let you be a kid for long, or you're always a kid, lol. It might've been awesome to pair kid T'Challa II with Moon Girl, at least for a bit, if we could've put them in the same age bracket -- and maybe Iron Man's daughter, all hanging out together:)
P.S. was that Duke in the photo next to him!? I didn't realize he was 8' tall! Holy shit, he coulda been in The Odyssey too!

I cannot wait. I adore David Jonsson, I think he's one of the best actors working today.
Everyone has seen the Long Walk and Romulus, but if you've not seen them go watch Rye Lane and Wasteman. Both excellent films with incredible performances
Aaah this is such excellent news
