Article ‘SPIDER-MAN 5’ won't be moving forward anytime soon. Director Destin Daniel Cretton has shifted his focus to the live-action ‘NARUTO’ adaptation, which begins in the first half of 2027, which he will direct next.

Tom Holland is now involved in the writing so I imagine he’d like to take the next year or so figuring out where he’d like to go. Cretton will likely be involved and ready to direct by the time they’re ready. I Hope so. He knocked it out of the park.

u/PCBuilderCat Aug 08 '26
If TH being involved with the writing was a factor for Brand New Day I'm totally fine waiting for that, BND had some of the best writing from a Marvel movie in quite some time. It was tight and almost every line of dialogue helped push the plot forward

He did the initial story outlining alongside DDC and the producers. He wanted Man-Spider which got vetoed :(.

u/PCBuilderCat Aug 08 '26
Ehhhhh looking at what we got I don’t know if going full man spider would have achieved much beyond body horror esque shock factor and end of the day these films aren’t meant to scare kids even if they do touch on serious topics

I think he wanted a nightmare with Man-Spider, but like you said it would've scared the kids.

He said it in an interview they dropped the idea because of kids... He didn't want to give nightmare to kids
17
u/dildodicks Tony Stark Aug 08 '26
man-spider in live action would've taken tom holland's immense popularity as spider-man and tanked it with kids permanently, you underestimate the importance of spider-man's mass appeal

Waiting between No Way Home and Brand New Day is a reason for why it’s been so successful.
Waiting to do Spider-Man 5 could payoff big time even though as a fan I don’t love it.

u/BecauseBatman01 Aug 08 '26
Idk maybe.
No way home and brand new day waiting makes sense since it was the conclusion of the original trilogy.I thought it was gonna be go go go now that a new trilogy of movies were set and get releases every 2 years. Oh well.

I mean RDJ is one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood, and he was heavily involved in the MCU during his prime.
Marvel has the money and resources to secure A-listers.

During the real "pump out multiple movies every year" era of the MCU here was RDJ's filmography
2012: The Avengers
2013: Iron Man 3
2014 : Chef, The Judge
2015: Avengers 2
2016: Civil War
2017: Spider-Man Homecoming
2018: Infinity War
2019: Endgame, Spider-Man FFH (basically a cameo).
Superhero movies take up a fuckton of your schedule. There was only a single year where he did non-MCU films in this 8 year stretch.

Didn't Chris Evans appear in a MCU movie every year from his debut until Endgame?
- 2011 Cap
- 2012 Avengers
- 2013 Thor 2 (Loki impersonation)
- 2014 Winter Soldier
- 2015 Age of Ultron
- 2016 Civil War
- 2017 Spider-Man Homecoming (post credit)
- 2018 Infinity War
- 2019 Endgame

Wasn't the Naruto movie announced like 2 years ago, right before he started production of Spiderman 4?
31
u/DarkJayBR Aug 08 '26
Yes, but work only started around last month. Naruto's creator wanted to move to the States to help Cretton with the script. When he did that last month, Lionsgate started the casting process.
→ More replies (1)15
u/KR_Blade Aug 08 '26
which im guessing for casting, they will want to go with young actors, cause if the movie is a success, they will have a cast that grows up with the movies, only question is how much do they plan to adapt for the movie, and my guess is, they will go up to as far as Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke's first actual mission, which was taking down Zabusa and Haku, cause its also the first time you start seeing Naruto tapping into the powers of the Nine Tailed Fox inside him, a perfect stopping point for the first movie to get fans wanting more if it turns out to be a success

The only acceptable scope for a 2-2.5 hour movie is to adapt up to the Land of Waves arc. The only real question is how will it be paced to get to that point.
→ More replies (1)4
u/WhasHappenin Aug 09 '26
I mean aside from that all you need is episode 1 and the team 7 intro/bell fight. Land of waves could be like 50-60% of the movie. Still think it will be hard to make it a single cohesive movie though.

I’m not gonna cry if they get a new director for Spider-Man. Destin was pretty dang good but Tom has more leverage with each release and could probably once again push for a great director and a lot of the elements that fans appreciate about this film could remain - practical stunts, less cg, more grounded etc
Again, no hate on Destin but I don’t want to wait 5-6 years and I believe there are other excellent directors out there who’d jump at the chance.

Sad reality is we are not getting Shang Chi 2 and SM5 by Cretton. Sony/Disney arent going to wait another 6 years for the next spider man and no one is going to care about Shang Chi in that amount of time either. Either SM5 is going to move forward with a new director or Shang Chi 2 is going to be scrapped

u/dulmosq Aug 08 '26
the guy who directed the furious (2026) would go nuts with shangchi tho

Yeah, Kenji Tanigaki will be a great fit if they decide to make another shang chi movie. He's also the action director of the live action rurouni kenshin movies and those movies have insane choreography. Excited to see his new movie with Peter dinklage too.
24
u/mwieckhorst Aug 08 '26
There are definitely a lot of good directors and choreographers out there that could make a baller Shang Chi sequel, but the MCU hasn't really featured action sequences that good outside of Cretton. So, I am concerned if they did pass it along to someone else, they would get it wrong

Shang-Chi getting scrapped is the most likely outcome here, but hopefully it can move forward with a different director. I’d love to see it move forward, but the offer that they’re going to make to Cretton for SM5 with BND’s success is going to be hard to turn down.
10
u/capscreen Aug 08 '26
Destin said it's still happening so I think it'll move forward with a different director and him still getting involved as producer

I agree, though creatively and strategically, I think it would be best to let someone else do SM and keep Cretton on for Shang Chi. I don't see anyone else making Shang Chi work the same as Cretton does and SM is as safe as it gets in the box office.
But yea, I sadly think Shang Chi will be scrapped and they will conclude the character in Secret Wars

Sure, but if you are okay with waiting till 2030-2031 for a new Spiderman from him. Bro is booked and busy.
In and ideal world, we get Shang-chi 2, Spiderman 5 and Fantastic 4 sequel in 2029.
2030 we get a new X-Men movie, another key avenger character, possibly a Thor send off movie and then a new Thunderbolts movie that deals with the core avengers that leads us to X-MEN vs Avengers in 2031.
But honestly X-Men cast is so big with so many characters they could do a seperate story for X-Men every year.
The issue imo is that theres a lot of characters from the OG avengers that kinda need to be sent away atp to stop the bloating, becasue adding X-Men and F4 gives us like dozens of new characters.
This is also why I hated what Marvel was doing with their Disney + format by introducing new characters when it should have been used tl further progress the stories of all the characters we currently have.

Are they attempting to condense the entire Naruto story into one movie or are they just focusing on one random story?
68

Exactly, you would need like 6 movies to even tell a semi coherent Naruto story.
3 for the original Naruto series and 3 for Shippuden.
14
11
u/N0UMENON1 Aug 08 '26
I think you're right, which is is kinda crazy. Imagine how padded-out and slow paced a show with over 500 episodes must be so that you can reasonably condense it into 6 movies.
We need Naruto Kai like yesterday. Especially the 4th Ninja War arc is such a slog.

If DDC wanted to fully adapt Naruto (only part 1 so not Part 2/Shippuden), he would need at least 3 movies to adapt it properly. Adapting the first movie actually works pretty well since it would only be the first 4 volumes (known as the Land of Waves Arc) which covers Naruto becoming a Genin, forming team 7 (Sasuke + Sakura + Kakashi) and going up against Zabuza and Haku.
2nd movie would adapt the Chunin Exams + Orochimaru assault arcs and the 3rd movie would adapt the Search for Tsunade and Sasuke Recovery Mission arcs.

Yeah but I think a huge part of the reason One Piece is working is because it's a series, not a movie. All the other massive failures were series adapted into movies (yeah other series flopped but we're not pretending Cowboy Bebop was as bad as Dragonball), and it doesn't work because the stories just aren't paced that way. Like where does a Naruto movie start and stop? Going the whole way through the first series is way too long, and there's no natural stopping point except for Naruto going with Jiraiya to find Tsunade, and then the whole movie is just the Chunin exams which won't draw the general audience.

Yeah, it sucks but it's undeniable that Brand New Day benefited from the break after No Way Home. I don't want another 5 year gap between sequels but 3 or 4 years isn't terrible especially since we'll see Spidey before then anyway. Like how Doctor Strange didn't get a sequel for a ridiculous amount of time but he was one of the main MCU figures after his solo movie so it didn't feel like it.

Considering the post credits tease at the end of BND, I 100% believe Spidey is going to be in Secret Wars and might even be the post credits tease for Doomsday. They’re gonna put him front and center in the marketing for SW and probably have him be the central character of it.

His solo movie was in 2016. He then had a brief role in Ragnarok (2017), a major role in IW (2018), a brief role in Endgame (2019), and then a major supporting role in NWH (2021).
So even though his actual sequel took 6 years, it was still his 6th appearance as Dr. Strange.

Just throwing it out right now here:
Naruto films in early 2027, and apparently will release either summer 2028 or winter 2028, so then, could Spider-Man 5 come out Summer 2029, and Shang-Chi 2 (my idea would be Agents of Atlas, mainly cause of Luna Snow as a box office draw) in Summer 2030?

I'm gonna huff some copium for a sec and say maybe Naruto films until Sept, it needs extra time because of all the action stunts and choreography, DDC takes a break in Oct then starts filming Shang Chi 2 in Nov to maybe April/May 2028, another break and starts on Spider Man 5 in July/Aug 2028 for a Summer 2029 release date.
My other solution is to make a Spiderman/Shang Chi team up film. In Spiderman 5 Peter has been kind of complacent with his powers, especially now with the heightened strength, senses, and natural web shooters. He's gotten better at letting people into his life, but the routine has gotten monotonous. Then a new villain comes along who is super powered and gives Spidey a run for his money. Peter can't rely on just his raw talent anymore. He has to train it.
And who does he go to for training? Shang Chi. Maybe throw in how Shang Chi also has history with the villain, but only if you can make it feel natural and not forced. Idk how his arc in the next Avengers films will be, but maybe in this team up film you can give him an arc about how he learns to be a public facing hero, and Spiderman inspires him to become one

u/galacticwinnow Aug 08 '26
He's not been confirmed for Spiderman 5 yet so those 2 news aren't related 😄
If Sony & Marvel want another movie by 2028 or 2029 and he's not available someone else will be hired.
He's just the director on BND.
The crew that thelped him achieve what he's done with BND will be there waiting to help another director if hired.
The movie just released and making money so any deal with him & Marvel will have to take the final BO into consideration before a new deal is reached.
In addition Amy Pascal has already confirmed that Sony and Marvel make deals for each movie individually.
That also applies to the director.
Cretton has not been signed for multiple Spiderman movies.
Whether Cretton returns will depend on many factors including on how successful his Naruto adaptation does by 2028 at least because he's more involved with that adaptation unlike BND where he's just a director.
He's also a writer on Naruto.
Of course given the reception of BND both critically and commercially, some people would want him to be back for Spidey 5 but nothing is set yet.
