General Window surround cracks

Post image

Suggestion on the best way and materials to use to close the cracks on the top surround of this window?

I believe it should have had a brick molding around it caulked and painted to stop water getting on it so directly.

It looks like some flashing is needed directly above the trim. It looks like water damage to me rotting the wood from above. Not sure if this is veneer or masonry barrier wall but the jointing looks like it could allow water entry. PVC / Azek would resist the rot.
