The Wachowskis' involvement in Matrix 5: "Drew Goddard doesn't want to go forward unless he gets our blessing, so we might take a look"

Lilly Wachowski: "Warner Bros. — they want to make another thing. They're always going to want to make another thing. Personally, I don't want to play in that sandbox anymore. I'm kind of done. But there's this maybe-a-thing that's happening with Drew Goddard, and he doesn't want to go forward unless he gets our blessing. And so it becomes this complicated situation — that maybe we're going to stick our noses in a tiny bit and see how we feel. And if we want to pass on our blessing to Drew or not. So could be something that's coming down the road, but it's still unknown."

Footage from the canceled Animatrix 2.0 project feels like the baby of "The Second Renaissance", "Detroit: Become Human", and "Assassin's Creed"!

I have been covering the little known Animatrix 2.0 stillborn project for a long time. (This is just one of my many posts about it.) Some sort of crossmedia, potentially interactive, potentially VR, sister project to The Matrix Awakens UE5 demo, that was spearheaded by John Gaeta and with story supervision and contributions by Lana Wachowski.

At some point 4 years ago, I, correctly as you'll see today, deduced it was being made by: https://wevr.com/

After seeing today's post that uncovered a few new details about it from John Gaeta, I revisited my research and voila: https://wevr.com/highlights/wevr-innovation-case-study-transmedia-cross-platform-ip-development-the-matrix

Wevr not only do they have some text information about it, but they also have a rough video.

The story takes place in the near future "at a time when robots and AI have embedded in human society, and humans are faced directly with the issues of AGI and the civil rights issues for both carbon and silicon-based intelligences."

In the video you can see human police confronting robots and sympathizers protesting for "MECH RIGHTS", while another robot and human are on the run together. The scene feels straight out of "The Second Renaissance" but it also recalls video game Detroit: Become Human.

There seems to also be a framing device that sets the story, as this seems to be some sort of historical re-enactment of the past that Neo is accessing within the Construct. (Alternatively, in the video with Gaeta it was said others would enter the Construct simulation to visit the past and look for clues to locate a missing Neo.) This all reminds me of the framing device of Assassin's Creed (note I stopped playing the games after the 2nd one).

With Lana Wachowski (who also wrote and directed much of The Matrix Awakens sister project) supervising this, the project was going to be as canon as anything else she wrote. And the 3D assets were to be made by VFX powerhouse Weta Digital.

Gaeta says people should demand they go back to it and revive this canceled project. Do you like what you see and do you agree with him?

Meeting the Oracle

"You're cuter than I thought. I can see why she likes you."

Neo: "Who?"

"Not too bright, though."

(I love the Oracle)

Why didn’t the defenders at Zion deploy flak cannons?

Title says it all. The sentinels attack in large swarms so the splash from 88mm flak would devastate them. The reason flak is considered obsolete is because modern jets fly too high and too fast, but sentinels are no faster than a helicopter snd don’t fly very high, and their armor seems no better than jets.

In a list of greatest movie villains, where would you rank Agent Smith?

I think he would make the Top 7 alongside Joker, Darth Vader, the Xenomorph and the T-1000.

What was Trinity referring to in the first Matrix when she said to Neo, “everything the oracle has told me has come true; everything but this”?

What is the “this”? Is it that she hasn’t fallen in love with him yet? Because I think at that point she has, or at least has a major crush on him. Or is it that she thinks that if she’s in love with him, they should be together, and they’re not yet? Or is it that she DOES love him, but he’s not yet walking the path of the One? And the man that she loves is the One, so maybe that’s confusing to her? Then she later says she needs to tell him something, but she’s afraid of what it could mean if she does…huh? What could it mean? Is she scared he may not love her back? IDK. 🤷‍♀️

I have yet to see another movie that looks this good, and tells such a profound story.

At 13, growing up during a war, The Matrix made me dream of becoming a filmmaker. Years later, I watched my own film with its executive producer.

The Matrix came out the same year NATO started bombing Serbia. I was 13.

I remember bombs falling five miles from our house. All the adults were terrified. But one of my strongest memories from that time is holding my breath for a completely different reason: my eyes were glued to a 10-inch TV screen, watching Neo attempt to jump from one rooftop to another.

The bullet time... the imagination behind it... I was mesmerized. For a moment, I forgot reality. Or maybe I discovered a new one.

That was when I made up my mind. I was going to make movies. In the US.

But how? My country was at war. Everything felt destroyed, and America felt impossibly far away.

Then I discovered that US universities offered full athletic scholarships to prospective students.

So I became a runner.

I never liked running. But I understood that it could be my ticket to the US. To become a filmmaker, I had to become a runner first.

Fast-forward to now. I’ve finished Demon Dancer: SUA/NARA, an independent action-fantasy film inspired by anime, manga, and, of course, The Matrix. It reached #1 in action/fantasy on South Korean digital platforms, and it’s coming to a limited theatrical release in the United States this December.

But something happened along the way that means more to me than I can really explain.

Barrie Osborne, executive producer of The Matrix and an Oscar-winning producer of The Lord of the Rings, watched Demon Dancer with me in a private screening.

He turned to me and said, “This is very original.”

My heart melted.

All those years... from being a boy in a small city during a war, watching The Matrix on VHS over and over, to sitting beside one of the people who helped create the film that made me want to become a filmmaker...

I just wish all my family members were still alive to witness this wild adventure...

The Matrix is still my all-time favorite movie. I’ve watched it more than 50 times on VHS alone, and somehow it keeps feeling more relevant.

If you’re curious about the film it inspired me to make, you can find it at demondancer.com, where you can also request a screening in your city.

Did The Matrix change the direction of anyone else’s life? I’d love to hear your story.

I have a problem with how good the soundtrack of the first film is compared to the latter films. The first film is full of great music from the era the film came out with big beat, hardcore and techno...but later the films just get bloated with orchestral music which is good yes but just feels like a missed opportunity to me!!!

Every time I decide to watch the trilogy again it blows my mind! I never seem to get over it what a masterpiece.

Is the latest movie worth it? And does it tie in properly to the other without ruining it?

Cheers

I love The Matrix: Resurrections, but years ago I came up with an entirely different idea for a 4th Matrix.

The story takes place not long after the trilogy. Neo and Trinity are dead. The machines are helping to rebuild Zion now that they have an agreement. Still, many citizens of Zion are incredibly restless and paranoid. They do not trust this "peace". These people try to recruit Morpheus to legitimize their perspective, but he fully believes that Neo saved them and will not under any circumstance disrespect his sacrifice. He can't even bring himself to entertain the idea.

This peace (stalemate) continues even while whispers of Neo sightings start echoing through the matrix. There are lots of Neo posers. He becomes, increasingly over time, a mythical "jesus" like figure who is celebrated for misunderstood reasons. Morpheus hates that Neo's sacrifice and memory are being bastardized by false narratives, and he wants nothing to do with any of it -- until he himself see a dead ringer for Neo somewhere in the matrix. Just a glimpse. But it's enough.

Now he's searching. He's starting to believe it. He talks to the oracle. The oracle tells him that many programs in the matrix are based on, or copies of real people who have lived -- what better way to make a program blend in?

Is this a program mimicking Neo and using the shell of Neo? Is this a copy of Neo? If it's a copy of Neo, is it Neo?

These are the agonizing questions at the heart of this story. And we won't know the answer until toward the end.

It turns out, the machines did copy -- and then manipulated -- Neo's code. He's in there, but he's scrambled. Confused. His memories are all wrong. His feelings are insane. He has no grounding. He has no purpose. He doesn't know who he is/was.

What the machines don't understand is that the Sati, under guidance of the oracle, sprinkled Neo's code and full memory into the matrix itself when she redesigned it. They knew the machines would try to use the legend of Neo to control humans, and they had a failsafe for such an occasion.

The longer this Neo program is in the matrix, the more it absorbs proper "Neo" code from the environment. But, for a long time, it confuses him and makes him behave erratically. Sightings of him become increasingly creepy/bizarre. He pops in and out of existence like a ghost. He's caught on CCTV doing superhuman things at random. It becomes a problem for the machines, as his existence was supposed to subtly pull tribal thinking humans toward their agenda, but his insane behavior has turned him into a massive liability. So they decide to try to shut him down.

By now, Morpheus has joined forces with every living/waking human who didn't trust this "peace" from the beginning. Now he's pissed off. He feels like they took his good friend's soul and weaponized it against humanity. He hates the machines with a deeper passion than ever. He knows that this glitchy, unpredictable copy of Neo is dangerous, but he doesn't care. He absolutely MUST find him and talk to him. He does find him -- because he knows him.

I've thought of a dozen different ways this interaction could go. In the end, Morpheus appeals to a part of Neo that seemed unlikely. Neo's pieces all fall together and he remembers who he was and what he was doing up to the very moment he died. It's right then -- at the moment Neo "wakes up" -- the agents attack. They totally obliterate Neo, and he's nothing but code/ash/nothingness. Morpheus screams "Neo!!!!" and goes charging after the agents on an obvious suicide mission. But riiiiiight when he's about to get slaughtered, time freezes. The scene reverses. Morpheus is watching everything happen backwards. He watches as the agents are about to kill Neo, and instead of that happening, Neo punches the floor, and the agents all explode.

Or whatever. I'm having fun with the end.

Before the credits roll, though, it's clear that Neo is physically dead. But his soul lives on in the matrix. He's still there. He just doesn't have a meat body.

Instead of wasting tons of power on the matrix, couldnt the machines just lobotomise the humans or something?

They just need the human body to generate bio electricity, they dont need them to actually think.

Merovingian survives by stealing time

"If we do not ever take time, how can we ever have time?" - says merovingian and the ghost brothers smile. How have they survived this long? They are programs whose purpose was finished and they chose exile over deletion. But I don't think being an exile is that easy in architect's system. They were created with system assigned time period and as exiles they have to steal time to survive. Whose time is it exactly? I don't know. Perhaps of people. He maintains himself in mind of people. Something like the concept of loosh.

Neo and Trinity only had 6 months together…

I’m doing my yearly rewatch of the first three movies and it lead me down a YouTube rabbit hole where one of the creators was breaking down the timeline…and he casually mentioned that there was essentially only six months between the first movie and the end of the third movie.

It breaks my heart to think about the fact that they only had six months together before the end.

Maybe it’s just me? I’m a hopeless romantic.

''The problem is choice''

Post image

Humans made a conscious choice to reject a benevolent coexistence with the machines, Neo rectified that error by having no choice but to merge with smith and going back to the source. Smith was under the illusion that he was making his own choice and killing Neo. Deus Ex Machina has no choice in Neo emerging in each matrix.

The machines have no choice but to rely on humans as a source of power.

Did the humans have no choice but to reject that initial offer of benevolent coexistence?
