Two dogs from neighbor dug a hole to our backyard then tried to dig a hole to outside but get stuck. I never raise a dog so don’t know what to do. One is dripping saliva the other one barks when I’m close. Neighbor won’t be back in another half hour. What do I do? Are dogs gonna be ok?
Edit: Both dogs are safe inside their home now, poor lads. I blocked the holes with bins for now.
Edit2: Really interesting morning. I just stood beside them and both dogs finally dug their way outside to freedom, they were very excited and run around so I followed them. Eventually they run to a playground nearby, and pooped on the way😂. In the end neighbor was back and took them home. A few hours later people from council knocked on my door asking if I own dogs, I realized they somehow escaped again! But finally they were taken back. Naughty doggies
Everyone's fawning over the dogs but the actual long term answer is to secure the fence line so they can't get under it again. I just did this with some loose bricks, though my dogs are a lot smaller than huskies.
If it's a continual problem then speak to the neighbor about a more permanent solution on their side of the fence.
If OP is genuinely worried about being able to contain them then could call the council and they should send a ranger. My advice would be to just shut them in somewhere safe and have a convo with the neighbour
Mine too, some kind of hard square wire, put it so it goes a fair way below ground because my tiny Pomeranian wants freedom and can easily dig to it. The problem is I’m in QLD and it keeps the snakes in as well as the dogs.
Shortly after install the dogs were barking so I went out to bring them in and they were harassing a small brown snake that I corralled to a small gap it could fit through. Afterwards found out it was actually an eastern brown and I had NFI the snake was deadly. Luckily it was not interested in attacking anyone - just wanted to get away from the dumb dogs. Never saw it again.
Leave gaps for the snakes lest you’ll be trapped in with them.
I have a border collie who went through a digging under fences stage.
After lots of mucking about with wire mesh, rocks, etc, I found the most effective, and by far the fastest solution was reo mesh (concrete reinforcing mesh) from Bunnings:
I cut a strip 3 squares wide and as long as needed, with spikes along one side and push it into the ground against the fence with my boot. I keep some pre-cut ready to go and I can block a hole like this in under a minute.
Quite a few years ago our next door neighbour had a pitbull that kept digging under our fence to play with our German Shepherd (luckily both were friendly so they were just happy wrestling with each other or chasing each other around our back yard, which was much larger than the yard next door). Dad ended up digging down further and then nailing some wooden panels to the fence and filling the dirt in again so the barrier extended down another half a metre or so.
I felt so sorry for the dog as its yard was the size of a shoe box and the owners used to leave it alone from about 6 in the morning to 6 at night, so I didn't blame it for digging holes all the time.
That’s sad. I hate when people just leave their dog home alone all day, every day. I wish your dad had put a dog flap in the fence instead. Different situation obviously if the dogs weren’t friends but it seems even worse to separate them permanently at that point.
The problem is that even though the dogs were both friendly, it only takes one 'misunderstanding' for one of them to have a go at the other. I wouldn't want either dog to get hurt and if their dog was the one who got hurt, I'd worry they would try to hold us legally/financially liable (even though it would have been their fault for not containing the dog). Trust me, we felt absolutely awful blocking the other dog into its own yard, but we can't be in our back yard supervising them all the time and we need to make sure that both dogs are safe from harm.
Please find something better than loose bricks. good idea in theory, but find something more suitable (bury some long planks or something and secure them somehow)
We used bricks for a while to plug up a gap under our front gate, until our pup tried to dig under and somehow got his leg snagged, breaking his leg. Got home after a day out with the little guy hopping up to the back door with a twisted and snapped front paw
We don't fully know how it happened as it was only a small pile of bricks (like 2-3 high, length ways) yet it was enough to cause a pinch point (brick shifted and locked against the ground/gate? we're not sure)
Freak accident, but still, make me totally rethink how to secure a backyard for a dog. (still makes me feel sick to my stomach each time i think about that day) Thankfully he lived a long happy life, but it was a fairly lengthy stay at the vets (6 weeks) and his leg always had a slight bow/kink to it
That's redundant, they already said it was a Samoyed (*) -
OP, if the dogs are stuck, they'll probably be ok for 30 minutes BUT if they're not and this is just 'playtime', it's on the neighbour to stop this. If it's the white one barking, that's simply because it's a Samoyed and they bark to chase away excess braincells. They honestly look like they're having fun rather than in distress, but of course without seeing more than a photo, ehhh...
You're well within your rights to use your 'angry voice' and 'GET OUT OF THERE!'. And the neighbour should be filling in that hole and repairing the area. Sammies are known for a complete lack of sense about personal boundaries - which needs to be backed up with correct enclosing.
They'll be fine for half an hour. Depends on the dog but most likely they are barking cos they see someone they want to say Hi to but they are temporarily inconvenienced.
If you re anxious about them though just leave them there and stay inside, don't go near until neighbour gets home, if they get out they will almost certainly run straight at you cos they want to play and if you start to panic that will get them more excited. Best to err on the side of caution if you don't know the dog
This++++. Also, ask neighbour to dig in more fencing underneath the defence so this doesn’t happen again. They need to secure their property more safely.
Don’t try get too close to the one that barks, but they should be fine until their owner gets home. Try to keep them in your yard so they’re safe at least, then talk to their owner.
Completely get you’re a bit wary of dogs but they look like they’ve gotten a bit bored and fancied an adventure.
I’m wondering if the neighbour doesn’t own them but is maybe pet sitting. If not they need to make an urgent trip to Bunnings to get their yard secured.
The white one (Samoyed ) is likely the one barking for attention.
Yeah, I had to deal with neighbours dogs getting into my garden. Neighbours ended up getting angry with us as we called the council instead of looking after the dogs which earned them an 'unnecessary' fine.
Stay low, no direct eye contact and throw treats / food like plain chicken over their side of the fence. Maybe they will be able to squeeze themselves out.
If they end up staying in your backyard, just secure it so they don't get onto the road and close your door if you are not comfortable until owners come back. Once owners come back, if they don't know, let them know that the dogs are finding a way out. Secure any spots they can dig through on your side
Get some Cyprus sleepers. Dig them into the ground, anchor some chicken wire with it and extend this a metre into your property if you can be bothered.
This really needs to be solved on your neighbours side though. :(
They are a pack dog with clearly defined hierarchy. As they mature they may seek to test that hierarchy by dominating others in the pack and challenge the alpha, regardless of whether it is canine or human.
The Akita has killed more owners/handlers than any other breed of dog. They are very cunning and can be very calculated. I know of one that when it figured out there was a litter of kittens living under the neighbours house, it dug a number of holes under the fence just big enough for a kitten to fit through, and it left a small amount of its food near the holes, which it replaced each day with new stuff. Eventually a kitten would come through the hole and it would catch it. It kept the kitten alive and then used it to draw more of the kittens out, the same way a sniper would incapacitate an enemy soldier on the battlefield and then wait for others to try and rescue them.
That same dog would attack me after displaying friendly behaviour towards me for 5 days while I came by to feed it, waiting until it could block me in a corner with no clear way out. It latched on to my calf and then alternated between tugging at my leg and trying to twist my leg attempting to roll me on to the ground.
Had an Akita growing up. When he was a pup, he loved to dig holes. When he got older, he attempted to escape via the back gate. He did manage to get out once. Took himself down to the park, ran around for a bit and then wandered home. Scared all of us.
My Akitas couldn’t get under our fence to the next door neighbours yard; so together with the two dogs next door they dug a hole and the little guys came to us 🤣 I had no idea because the next door dogs would go back when I got home. One day my neighbour sent a photo and it was just of his dog standing on my outdoor table surveying the street.
The Japanese are beautiful too. A lot more suited for easier handling. You do need to be strong, firm and respect the temperament with the American as they’re not the easiest breed, especially if they’re a rescue. And they all deserve forever homes.
They all have their own personalities and are all beautiful.
Yes, Samoyeds are a hearding dog and can get a bit pushy. But they don't bite. (Border collies might nip you to herd you)
Herding dogs however like eye conta6and like to please (the best superpower I like)
Honestly this is a real concern and I’m sorry but there’s not much you can do apart from giving them water and love and maybe some treats. I mean, those faces! Lil turds
The fact the the owner wasn’t home and the dogs pooped on the way to the park is suggestive they’re not being walked/not walked enough. This is the sort of shit you see with active breeds that are under exercised. People want the dogs but don’t give them the conditions they need for healthy behaviour. Poor dogs. Lucky the neighbour is caring.
Never said it proves anything, I said it ‘suggests’. As you said, one of your dogs holds on to poop until it is walked. This is common in dogs. The fact both of these dogs pooped once they were both out of the yard is suggestive they were hanging for both a walk and a crap. And in the context of digging under a fence- that is a definite sign of unmet needs, including an outlet for energy.
This should end up being a meme. I have nothing to add other than I love everything about this post.. from the description to the happy outcome. Thank you random internet Melburnian.
Lmao the chaos in the white one's eyes, while the other looks like he's the agreeable friend who tags along for all shenanigans and might be saying 'arr you sure we should be doing this?'
Just talk to them in a very sweet way and give them some water if you don’t want to spook them or are worried they may bite if you dig around them. They should be okay for half an hour
Put a fence gate in so that they can visit in a more dignified manner. They are larger sized dogs and in a more natural environment, they would roam much larger distances/larger territory. Poor puppers.
Id say chilli powder in the soil but you might hurt the dogs. I'd be dealing with the neighbours by first asking them to secure the dogs and then if that doesn't work id be getting the council involved.
That face lmao, I could not be scared of that. Id invite them in for a cuddle before they go home. Samoyeds are great and the Akita is just a pup by the looks. They look like a couple of big goof balls. Wish they were in my yard lol
Your neighbours' dogs, your neighbours' responsibility. Go knock on the door, ask them to come retrieve them from your yard, ask them to take reasonable steps to prevent recurrence, line your side of the fence with bricks or something, and explain that if it keeps happening you'll need to call the ranger, which will won't be cheap for them.
If neither you nor your neighbour are arseholes, I predict a pleasant and acceptable outcome.
[Edit: if your neighbours weren't home (it helps to read the post properly 🙄), I'd dig 'em out, induce them to return to their own yard or confine them somewhere in mine, and have that conversation as soon as said neighbours return. The dogs look friendly enough, but if they're not, or if they've worked themselves up into a panic, or if you have a genuine big dog phobia, go straight to the ranger. That's not an unreasonable course of action.]
We've got two mini Fox Terriers, the lil fuks kept getting through our fence, then I secured it (pool fencing), with lots of unsightly chicken type wire, stopped them for a while, the they worked out they can jump high enough to go over.....
Their currently in Doggo Jail (our local vet), as of time of posting, I'm going to pick the up after work, but cause it the 2nd time this week, I have to post bail for them......
Im honestly getting sick of it.
Problem is the rest of the family love them too much to find them a new home and for me to regain my sanity.
They love you 😂😂🤣
This will be a daily occurrence with their owners at work you because the leader of the pack & they want your attention they will dig under the fence energy day.
You either like it & enjoy the dogs company I mean I would love it because I love Dogs but each to their own.
If you don’t simply dig out the dirt & replace it with a few bags of Rapid Set Concrete add water give it a bit of a stir & in 30 minutes it’s set.
Dogs can’t dig through Concrete.
My Brother had to do this all along his dividing Fence. This big Mastiff next door literally had no nice backyard just lots of sand & weeds.
It used to dig under my brothers fence & go for a swim in their Spa then fall asleep on there romantic swinging double chair.
Never heard something so funny in my life.
The Dog thought it had its own luxury Resort next door 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Each time he’d fill the hole with concrete the next morning there would be a hole 🕳️ dug right next door hahaha so funny 🤣
Omg so playful looking from this photo!!! Our two large breed have decided it’s time to start tunneling as the neighbours have just installed a chicken coup directly on the opposite side of the fence. So far, so good but it’s stressful to leave them at the moment until we can sort the problematic area! 🥰🥰
Just a word of caution. A lady i work with used some colourbond, dog got stuck and died trying to pull its head back out. The colourbond acted like a one-way dog valve.
If you work from home and have a secure back yard, you could offer to watch them. Sign up to one of the dog walker/sitter websites(just because you get public liability insurance) and offer to watch them for ~50-100 a day. If you’re near a park throw a ball for 30 minutes. Dogs don’t escape, you get some extra cash win/win.
They seem like they’re bored, either need more walks or stimulation or just want to nap under their human’s desk while they work.
Both breeds are working so they need constant stimulation. Unfortunately some people think they can just get a dog and leave it to its own devices (other than food and water).
A former friend had a dog that looked similar to the one on the right. He was gorgeous, but he was an absolute menace. He could escape Alcatraz. I have no idea how he got out as often as he did, but I'm convinced that if he needed to acquire a fake passport to cross a border, he'd find a way. Houdini had nothing on that guy.
Out of curiosity why is that your go to move? If the neighbours got a new puppy they might not have realised he/she is an escape artist and their yard security needs a bit of tightening up.
I get it. Every other day they appear in your yard and the neighbours don’t seem to care but at least give them a chance to sort out the problem. Jeez…
I guess it comes down to whether the dogs can be contained in the OP's yard. If there is no fence between the back and front yards, then the dogs are at risk of wandering and possibly getting hurt.
Also, I love dogs, but an Akita mauled our Labrador when it was a puppy. It was pretty scary and not all people are confident around dogs. If they are not, then a Ranger is probably a reasonable option.
I am having a nightmare day at work & this photo has very much cheered me up. Their facial expressions are just hilarious. Especially the white one, my god! Dogs are the best. Thanks for posting! :)
If you want to avoid this just get some pet fencing that you push into the ground. Freely available on Amazon and not that expensive. Just push it down your fence line on your side and no more invading doggos.
Worst response - call the council and have the loose dogs taken away.
Better - Secure your yard and close your back door. Have a conversation with your neighbour about securing their fence for the safety of the dogs.
We don't have many dog problems in Australia. There are loose units but 99% are friendly domestic dogs. If you're unfamiliar with dogs, these dogs have friendly faces. Stereotypical Husky escape artist derp and go with the flow young Shepard. I'd keep other pets away from them for everyone's safety.
pet them and give them some love! They look like sweethearts. Huskies can be a handfull, they can be the sweetest dogs but can be the most iron willed self reliant assholes you'll ever meet.
