Melodica with lead sheets
I picked up a melodica recently and am trying to figure out how to make use of chords on lead sheets.
My (probably wrong) instinct is to play a left hand melody and chords on the right hand, since the low pipes seem to get priority on air. But doing, for example, a full Am6/9 plus the melody is putting a lot of air through the thing, not to mention the limited range of the keyboard on a 32-key.
Anybody have any thoughts/tips?

you can't play more than about two or three notes before it sounds bad from lack of air.
it takes a lot of wind to get the notes to play good pitch (inadequate air make the note a little flat). so I don't think you will be able to do both the melody and a chord at the same time.
another thing to keep in mind is the high notes need less wind than the low ones.

Try just the root and third of the chord along with the melody. You get diminishing returns going past 3 notes or so

You almost surely want to keep the chords below the melody.
But you will often get good results from playing just the bass line and the melody, rather than the whole chord. Also look for opportunities to double the melody a third or a sixth below to fill in a missing chord note.

Play with a guitarist or ukulele friend. They play the chords, you play the melody.
