This is such a pro way of handling it! Not picking a fight with the cashier or going hardcore karen, just a simple "you know how bad this looks, will ya help as Im a paying customer"
I've genuinely had an employee go "I know that thing is junk. It shouldn't be on the menu, but, ya know. It's just what they give us unfortunately. My favorite thing is actually our desserts. Would you be cool with swapping it out for one of these cakes? My favorite is the carrot cake."
And it was honestly really good to boot. So they even steered me in the right direction.
It's a reason I now like going places, and if I have any hesitation, I ask them "Hey, what's your favorite item here?"
Sometimes they say "Most people like the _____" but I double down on their personal favorites.
Some people are even eager to share weird combos, like they eat something with a sauce that isn't usually put on it, and it ends up actually being really good.
(As an ex-subway employee, I will die on the hill that a sweet onion chicken teriyaki, with swiss, mustard, olives, and an absurd amount of spinach is one of the best things you can get there)
